Even in the Darkness, His Hand Holds

Psalm 88:1-2,6    O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you. May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry.

If ever there was a song of sorrow and a Psalm of sadness, Psalm 88 is one. Psalm 88 is a desperate cry to the Lord from a very dark lonely place. It’s overriding theme is one of being lost in impenetrable thick darkness; a darkness which envelopes and gradually draws the life out of the one engulfed by it.

Psalm 88 mentions darkness three times, stressing the seeming distance of God, the feeling of being beyond the care or reach of the Lord. Also missing from Psalm 88 is any declaration of the Lord’s steadfast love.

Psalm 88:6    You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.

Psalm 88:10-12   Do You show Your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you?   Selah
Is Your love declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Destruction?
Are Your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?

Psalm 88:16-18   Your wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me. All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me. You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend.

Psalm 139:11-12 seems to be an answer to this desperate impenetrable darkness. So if you find yourself in a place where darkness seems to be your closest friend, remember to declare the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness. There is no place so dark or so far where the Lord’s hand cannot reach or that His all seeing eye cannot find.

Psalm 139:9-12    If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,”   …   even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.

Psalm 18:28   You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

***

If I fear that the thick darkness will over take and engulf me
Or that all light will be swallowed by the dead of night

Dear Lord help me to remember
the darkness will not be dark to You
and that the night will shine like the day
for darkness is as light to You.

Lord help me to remember , there is NO place
that Your hand cannot reach
or Your all seeing eye cannot find.

Your right hand will hold me fast!
