Midnight Praise

March 28, 2011

Acts 16:23-25After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them securely. 24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Awful circumstances can not alter God’s goodness.

Praise the Lord with songs thru the night
A prayer to the God of my life
-Ps 42:5,8
Midnight praise brings God’s Son
Who can brighten even the darkest day or hour!

O Lord, help me to remember,
– the darkness is not dark to You –
– the night will shine like day –
for darkness is as light to You.

Even there Your right hand holds me fast!
-Ps 139:10-12

Michal’s Complaint

March 25, 2011

2 Samuel 6:20-23 NKJV … Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” 21So David said to Michal, ” It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the LORD. 22And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”

23Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

Question: Did David uncover himself in way that was dishonoring to the Lord when he danced before the Lord with all his might 2 Sam 6:14? Was Michal’s complaint right, that David’s worship was not true worship?

1. Michal’s heart was not right

A quick look at the above verses seems to show that Michal was punished for what she said –> implying that she was the one in the wrong.

A few verses before in 2 Sam 6:16 it says Michal despised King David leaping and dancing before the Lord. This along with the description that she was Saul’s daughter reveal Michal’s heart – Michal had Saul’s heart. The ark was neglected during Saul’s reign – it was not the focus. {1 Chr 13:3 – from Commentary 2 Sam 6:16}

the LORD says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed[07043]‘{cursed, bring contempt, dishonored}. -1 Sam 2:30

2. David wore a linen ephod – a simple priestly garment 2 Sam 6:14

David wore a linen ephod dancing before the Lord. The linen[0906] ephod[0646] was worn by priests – it was not dishonoring but rather simple and humble white linen. It was worn to minister[08334] before the Lord in humble worship.

Now Samuel was ministering[08334] before the LORD, as a boy wearing a linen ephod. -1 Sam 2:18

David humbled himself and took off his king’s robe and crown. He wore a simple linen ephod. His heart was not to dishonor the Lord. He came before the Lord not as a King but as a humble worshiper, a servant of the King of Kings the right heart attitude. This is what Michal despised – David did not appear as King, an elevated social position. Her complaint is more about how David appeared to others than his worship of the Lord. David however danced with all his might – His focus was the Lord and not what other people thought.

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” -1 Sam 16:7

King David did not think it was a bad reflection on himself to appear in public in the garment of a minister to the ark. We should all serve the Lord with a heart as sincere and humble as David’s.

And when He had removed him{Saul}, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.’ -Acts 13:22

Glory in the Lord

March 23, 2011

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

When you share the Lord with others,
See that He is on display;
For the world to see Him clearly,
We must not get in the way. —Sper

2 Corinthians 10:17 He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.

Jeremiah 9:24“Let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.

Psalm 34:2-3 Let my soul boast in the LORD; let the afflicted{humble, discouraged, poor in spirit} hear and rejoice. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together.

Everlasting God – King of Ages

March 20, 2011

From everlasting to everlasting You are God!
In all generations You are our safe dwelling place,
our Rock of habitation, our Rock of refuge, our Rock eternal.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were born or You gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. -Ps 90:1-2

Continually You draw us with Your everlasting love and mercy to come and be concealed in the cleft.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness. -Jer 31:3

You are my Rock, my fortress; my strong tower that I run into and am safe.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous runs into it and is safe. -Prov 18:10

Be my strong refuge{my rock of habitation}, to which I may continually come; You have given the commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress. -Ps 71:3

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no-one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. -Isa 40:28-31

Trust in the LORD for ever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal! -Isa 26:4

The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior! -2 Sam 22:47

Now to the King eternal{of the ages}, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. -1 Tim 1:17

Rejoice in the LORD and Be Glad

March 11, 2011

Psalm 32:7,10-11 You are my hiding place;

hiding[05643] = sheltered, covered, protected, secret place

You preserve me from trouble;

preserve[05341] = to watch, guard, keep

You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah. … Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love{lovingkindness, mercy} surrounds the one who trusts in Him.

surround[05437] = encompass, enclose, envelop

songs of deliverance = songs of celebration for salvation BBE
…………………………….= a garlands of hosannas MSG
…………………………….= songs of victory and triumph NLT

Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous ones; And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.

Trust in the Lord
Abide in the secret place
Hidden beneath the shadow of His wings -Ps 91:1, 4
Surrounded, encompassed, enveloped, upheld in mercy
Midst songs of deliverance, garlands of hosannas
Rejoice in the LORD and be glad.

“Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME
OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!” -Mt 21:8-9

This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Garlands of Hosannas

March 9, 2011

Matthew 21:8-9 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut [palm]branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”

The new testament word hosanna[5614] is the greek spelling of the hebrew words yasha’[03467] na’[04994] found in the old testament in only one place. It means ‘Save now, I pray’. It’s a cry for help.

Psalm 118:25-26 Save now, I pray, O LORD; O LORD, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.

Over the years hosanna changed from being a cry for help to a form of praise – a shout of hope and exultation. So Hosanna to the Son of David means “The Son of David is our salvation! Hooray for the king! Salvation belongs to the king!” And Hosanna in the highest means “Let all the angels in heaven join the song of praise. Salvation! Salvation! Let the highest heaven sing the song!”

Since we just recently sang the song Hosanna I was thinking of the above meanings when I stumbled across this verse and the phrase garlands of hosannas around my neck.

Psalm 32:7 NASB You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

Psalm 32:7 MSG GOD’s my island hideaway, keeps danger far from the shore, throws garlands of hosannas around my neck.

Is the Lord Jesus ‘your’ hiding place? Have you embraced His offer of salvation? Have you as a sinner taken shelter in His mercy and compassion? Do you wear your salvation for all to see? Is it around your neck as a garland of hosannas?

Let’s embrace the Son of David, the Messiah King, Jesus Christ’s offer of salvation. And next time we sing – especially hosanna – let’s wear it as a garland of hosannas around our necks for all to see. Let all see where our hope, confidence and joy come from.

“Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”

Day After Day

March 4, 2011

Matthew 6:24-25, 28 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. THEREFORE I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? … Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;

Who have you chosen to follow?
Day after day choose to follow Jesus
Consider the lilies and rest in His arms.

Day after day
His mercies new, great is His faithfulness! -Lam 3:23

Day after day
The LORD is wonderfully good
… to those whose hope is in Him
… to those who wait for Him
… to those who diligently seek Him
… to those who trust Him. -Lam 3:25

Cast all your anxiety on Him, release the weight of it.
He will sustain you BECAUSE He cares for you. -1Pe 5:7; Ps 55:22

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens. Selah -Ps 68:19 NIV

Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day He carries us in His arms. -Ps 68:19 NLT
