Word Study

From NetBible Ps 18:46

  • The Lord Lives[02416] = alive, green, flowing fresh water, reviving (of the springtime)

*Here the statement is an affirmation of the Lord’s active presence and intervention. In contrast to pagan deities, he demonstrates he is the living God by rescuing and empowering the psalmist.

  • Blessed[01288] be = to kneel, adore, praise, salute
  • my Rock[06697]
*“my rocky cliff,” which is a metaphor for protection. My protector is praiseworthy!
  • The God who delivers[03468] me is exalted[07311]as king! *“the God of my deliverance.” 2 Sam 22:48 reads, “the God of the rocky cliff of my deliverance.”

*The words “as king” are supplied in the translation for clarification. Elsewhere in the psalms the verb רוּם (rum, “be exalted”), when used of God, refers to his exalted position as king (Pss 99:2; 113:4; 138:6) and/or his self-revelation as king through his mighty deeds of deliverance (Pss 21:13; 46:10; 57:5, 11).

From NetBible Isa 26:4

  • trust[0982] = be confident, secure, safe

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. -2 Cor 4:6

The Son is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high … -Heb 1:3

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. -Isa 9:6

Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace … -Eph 2:13-14

Blessed Are The Poor In Spirit

December 9, 2011

Matthew 5:3 NKJV … Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:3 NLT … God blesses those who realize their need for Him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them.

Matthew 5:3 MSG … You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.

What does it mean to be poor in spirit?

From NetBible Mt 5:3

poor[4434] = needy, helpless, powerless to accomplish an end
*begs for daily living
Synonym: [5870] = earns his bread by daily labour

spirit[4151] = the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son

The poor in Spirit

  • Know that they need Jesus Christ as their Savior
  • Know that faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to obtain help
  • Know that apart from Jesus Christ they can do nothing
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. -Jn 15:5
  • Are willing to daily depend on and trust in Jesus Christ alone
If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself[disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and give up himself] and take up his cross daily and follow Me [cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also.] -Lk 9:23 AMP

Are blessed

  • The poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of heaven
for they have realized their need and willingly submit to Jesus Christ’s rule
  • The poor in Spirit are rich in faith
Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and in their position as believers and to inherit the kingdom which He has promised to those who love Him? -Ja 2:5 AMP
  • The poor in spirit are provided for out of God’s goodness
You, O God, did send a plentiful rain; You did restore and confirm Your heritage{inheritance} when it languished and was weary. Your flock found a dwelling place in it; You, O God, in Your goodness did provide for the poor and needy. -Ps 68:9-10

    They are restored and refreshed
All things have been entrusted and delivered to Me by My Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Son except the Father, and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son deliberately wills to make Him known. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] -Mt 11:27-28 AMP

Matthew 5:4 NKJV … Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of sympathy (pity and mercy) and the God [Who is the Source] of every comfort (consolation and encouragement), Who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort (consolation and encouragement) with which we ourselves are comforted (consoled and encouraged) by God. -2Cor 1:3-4 AMP
