Love Covers a Multitude of Sins

1 Peter 4:8Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

What does love covers a multitude of sins mean?

Does this mean turn a blind eye to sin, leave the issue alone{don’t confront or address it} —> just “love” the person despite what they are doing?

1 Peter 4:7-8The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

James 5:19-20My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.

Galatians 6:1Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.

From NetBible 1Pe 4:8 and Ja 5:20 to cover does mean to hide or veil from view. However, if the problem is not addressed we become an enabler{giving the appearance of approval} and as seen above the person caught in sin or error is not restored.  The intent of the above verses is restoration.

It’s also clear from the above verses that to confront or address the issue of sin or error has to be done carefully – with sound judgement and a sober spirit in gentleness and truth.

Ephesians 5:8-11walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them

Matthew 18:15 If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.

The covering of love means to address or confront sin in private in hopes of restoration. Sin needs to be confronted out of love with righteousness and truth. It’s about creating a safe environment where we can be honest with each other and truly pray for each other. We judge with righteous, sound judgement not to condemn but to restore –> that we may be healed.

James 5:16Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Romans 12:19-21Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Love does not pretend the enemy is a friend or that his evil doing is of no account. The would be calling evil good.

Isaiah 5:20Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Instead love seeks to purify evil with good. Love seeks to turn the sinner from his error –> only in doing this does “love cover a multitude of sins”.

1 Peter 1:22-23 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.

Other good questions arise from this study —
Can you fervently love without truth? without righteous judgement?
Can you really walk in the Light without righteous judgement? without discerning truth? without discerning good from evil?

Can you really live in peace? without truth? without righteous judgement?;Ps85:10;is32:17;ro14:17;2Tim2:22&version=NASB
