Daily Bread and Thanks

John 6:11 … And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.

John 6:23 however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks––

Look at the relationship between distributing bread, eating bread and giving thanks. AFTER giving thanks the bread is distributed and eaten. Thanks here means to be grateful and is often associated with saying grace at a meal. This made me think of the Lord’s Supper.

Mark 14:22-26And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed[2127] and broke it , and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks[2168] He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

The above passage reveals another word for thanks which means to celebrate with praise. Also notice the singing of a hymn. The Hallel Psalms (Ps 113-118) were sung during the meal. Psalms 113 and 114 were sung just before the second cup and 115-118 were sung at the end of the meal, after the fourth, or hallel cup.

When asking for daily bread or words from the Lord, try giving thanks from a grateful heart and celebrate the ‘bread’ that is given with praise and a song!

Matthew 6:11 AMP … Give us this day our daily bread.

Luke 4:4 AMP … And Jesus replied to him, It is written, Man shall not live and be sustained by (on) bread alone but by every word and expression of God.

Matthew 6:11 AMP … Give us this day our daily bread.

John 6:33-34 AMP … For the Bread of God is He Who comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world. Then they said to Him, Lord, give us this bread always (all the time)!
