Matthew 18 Used to Silence Contenders

Usually if anyone questions a public teaching by a professing christian they are silenced with Matthew 18. They are told that they must follow Matthew 18:15-17 and go to the person promoting the teaching in private. This passage is also used to silence people from naming names of false teachers. In fact I’ve been criticized for publicly questioning a popular book on prayer recently. Is this biblical?

If you click on the link above you can see this scripture in context. It doesn’t refer to public false teaching. It refers to private sin. A private rebuke is given for private sin.

So how do you confront public false teaching?
A public rebuke is given for public sin.

Jude 1:3-4Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. 4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Contend for the faith earnestly –
Be ready, Matthew 18 will be used to try to silence you or
get you to compromise God’s word for the sake of unity.
