The Bread of Adversity and Rain

December 4, 2013

Isaiah 30:20-21Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers[03384] will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Deuteronomy 32:2Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, And as showers on the grass.

Although the Lord gives you
The bread of adversity and the water of affliction
You will not have a famine of hearing His words.

He will come to you like rain in your affliction
His words will be as raindrops upon tender herb
He will refresh and sustain you.

Like sweet spring rain
You will see with your own eyes
The light of the King’s face
His smile and favor.

Hosea 6:3 … So let us know{acknowledge}, let us press on to know{acknowledge} the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering[03384] the earth.

Psalm 34:19Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.

Proverbs 16:15In the light of a king’s face is life, And his favor is like a cloud with the spring rain.

Word Study

.

From NetBible Isa 30:20 and Hos 6:3

  • teachers/rain[03384] = to shoot arrows, to throw water, rain, to flow as water, to instruct, to point out (as if by aiming the finger)

From Commentary

  • A famine of bread{the bread of adversity} is not so great a judgment as a famine of the word of God.Amos 8:11“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the LORD.
  • the bread of adversity and the water of affliction = a famine of bread and water, as is common in times of a siege.
  • some interpret teacher as the same word as rain, because doctrine from the mouth of a teacher drops like rain upon the tender herb, and as showers on the grass;
  • bread of adversity—He will not deny you food enough to save you in your adversity (1Ki 22:27; Ps 127:2).
  • teachers hidden no more = be removed—rather, “hide themselves”; they shall no more be forced to hide themselves from persecution, but shall be openly received with reverence [Maurer]. Contrast with this (Ps 74:9; Am 8:11).

Tender Hearted Delight

December 1, 2013

Psalm 37:3-4 … Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

From NetBible Ps 37:4

  • Delight[06026] = to be soft{pliable}, be delicate, be dainty
  • Desires[04862] = request, petition, prayers

*Faith and obedience (v. 3) will bring divine blessing (v. 4).

2 Kings 22:18-19 … Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard what I spoke against this place . . . I also have heard you, says the Lord.

From NetBible 2Ki 22:19

  • Tender[07401] = to be soft, sensitive, responsive, penitent
  • Humbled[03665] = to be brought into subjection
    * two key references Lev 26:41 & 2 Chron 7:14 indicate that so long as a person, or nation, is arrogant or self sufficient, God can do nothing for them
