Pure in Heart – Lift Up Your Heads!

Psalm 24:3-4,7 NKJV … Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy [dwelling]place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. … Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.

Matthew 5:8 NKJV … Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Who may lift up their heads and ascend into the hill of the Lord? Into His dwelling place/presence?
==> Those with clean hands and a pure heart

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • *clean hands – pure heart ==>The “hands” allude to one’s actions, the “heart” to one’s thought life and motives.
  • pure[01249] = clear, sincere
From[01305] = to purify, select, polish, choose, purge, cleanse or make bright, test or prove, examine

From NetBible Mt 5:8

  • pure[2513] = clean, purified by fire, sincere, blameless, innocent, free from falsehoods
    * like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit
  • see[3700] = to behold, to allow oneself to be seen

==> Those who have not lifted up their souls to an idol

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • lift up[05375] = rise up, look up
  • *lift up his soul to an idol ==> here means to “long for” or “desire strongly.”
==>the opposite of Ps 143:8 -lift up his soul to the Lord
Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

The words above give a beautiful picture of what a pure heart is. A heart that so longs for the Lord’s presence that it willingly submits to the Lord’s purifying fire or pruning. A heart that longs to hear and do the Lord’s will alone. The pictures of a pure heart above are much like the picture painted below in Paul’s prayer(Phil 1:9-11).

The strong’s word – heilikrines [1506] for sincere in his prayer is very interesting. It means pure, sincere, unsullied. Looking more closely at this word, we see it is actually a compound word. The first part comes from heile (the sun’s ray), the second from krino (to judge). So the two parts together mean to be found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light!

What a beautiful picture of a sincere/pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

From NetBbible Phil 1:10

  • *sincere – heilikrines[1506] = pure, unsullied
*found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light
*from heile (the sun’s ray) and [2919]; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.
Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV … And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God..Psalm 139:23-24    Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
