Run to Win!

March 29, 2014

From 365 Promises

1 Corinthians 9:24-25 AMP
24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but [only] one receives the prize? So run [your race] that you may lay hold [of the prize] and make it yours.
25 Now every athlete who goes into training conducts himself temperately and restricts himself in all things. They do it to win a wreath that will soon wither, but we [do it to receive a crown of eternal blessedness] that cannot wither.

There is not a solitary crown given to the fastest runner, or the runner with the most endurance, but for everyone who finishes! ==> So keep running your race. Don’t stop. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, who is waiting at the end of your running lane ready to present you with a crown of glory that will last forever!

Hebrews 12:1-2 AMP
1 Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,
2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

True Wisdom

March 26, 2014

James 3:13-18 AMP
13 Who is there among you who is wise and intelligent? Then let him by his noble living show forth his [good] works with the [unobtrusive] humility [which is the proper attribute] of true wisdom.

Humility marks true wisdom
From NetBible Ja 3:13

  • humility[4240] = mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, meekness

14 But if you have bitter jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry, selfish ambition) in your hearts, do not pride yourselves on it and thus be in defiance of and false to the Truth.

Pride marks earthly wisdom
From NetBible Ja 3:14

  • contention[2052] = selfish ambition, self-promoting
*Paul exhorts to be one in the mind of Christ not putting self forward
or being selfish – but put others first (Php 2:3)

15 This [superficial] wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual (animal), even devilish (demoniacal).

16 For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.

17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure (undefiled); then it is peace-loving, courteous (considerate, gentle). [It is willing to] yield to reason, full of compassion and good fruits; it is wholehearted and straightforward, impartial and unfeigned (free from doubts, wavering, and insincerity).

18 And the harvest of righteousness (of conformity to God’s will in thought and deed) is [the fruit of the seed] sown in peace by those who work for and make peace [in themselves and in others, that peace which means concord, agreement, and harmony between individuals, with undisturbedness, in a peaceful mind free from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts].

Peace marks true wisdom

Righteousness is sown in peace by the peacemakers

Isaiah 32:17 AMP … And the effect of righteousness will be peace [internal and external], and the result of righteousness will be quietness and confident trust forever.

The effect of righteousness is peace which results in quiet, confident, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ forever.

The Beauty of the LORD

March 23, 2014

Psalm 90:14-17 AMP
14 O satisfy us with Your mercy and loving-kindness in the morning [now, before we are older], that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

From NetBible Ps 90:14

15 Make us glad in proportion to the days in which You have afflicted us and to the years in which we have suffered evil. 16 Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants, and Your [glorious] majesty to their children. 17 And let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God be upon us; confirm and establish the work of our hands—yes, the work of our hands, confirm and establish it.

From NetBible Ps 90:17

  • beauty[05278] = kindness, pleasantness, delightfulness, favor
  • establish[03559] = confirm, set up, make successful

Look how rejoicing and gladness are related to the LORD’s beauty resting upon us and confirming the work of our hands.

Psalm 33:1 AMP … Rejoice[07442] in the Lord, O you [uncompromisingly] righteous [you upright in right standing with God]; for praise[08416] is becoming and appropriate[05000] for those who are upright [in heart].

Psalm 147:1 AMP … Praise[08416] the Lord! For it is good[02896] to sing praises[02167] to our God, for He is gracious and lovely[05273]; praise[08416] is becoming and appropriate[05000].

From NetBible Ps 33:1, 147:1

  • rejoice[07442] = sing/shout greatly for joy, in triumph
  • praise[08416] = adoration, thanksgiving, song/hymn
*from [01984] = to shine, brighten in praise
  • sing praise[02167] = celebrate in song and music
  • becoming & appropriate[05000] = beautiful, fitting, lovely
  • good[02896] =pleasant, appropriate, becoming
  • gracious & lovely[05273] = delightful, pleasant, beautiful

Praise from the upright is beautiful.

Psalm 27:4 AMP … One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.

From NetBible Ps 27:4

  • beauty[05278] = kindness, pleasantness, delightfulness, favor

Seeking the LORD’s Face

March 20, 2014

1 Chronicles 16:11 AMP … Seek the Lord and His strength; yearn for and seek His face and to be in His presence continually!

What keeps us from seeking the Lord?

PRIDE is one big thing …

Psalm 10:4 AMP … The wicked one in the pride of his countenance will not seek, inquire for, and yearn for God; all his thoughts are that there is no God [so He never punishes].

From NetBible Ps 10:4

  • *pride of his countenance = according to the height of his nose: refers to an arrogant or snooty attitude; it likely pictures one with his nose turned upward toward the sky in pride.
  • * the wicked … thinks, “God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care”.(NET)
  • *the wicked … in all his thoughts there is no room for God.(NIV)

The heart determines how much the Lord is sought. Is the Lord and His presence a vital need?

Psalm 27:8 AMP … You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on the authority of Your Word].

Jeremiah 29:13 AMP … You will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

Faith is required to seek and please the Lord.

Hebrews 11:6 AMP … But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].

Praise You Lord Jesus, You reward those who diligently seek You. Stir our hearts to yearn for Your presence as a vital need. Thank You that as we seek You with our whole hearts, we will find You!

O Most High

March 18, 2014

The following song has been on my heart the last couple days. Comforting to remember who to “run” to when trouble comes. The Lord is faithful!
Keep seeking, knowing and trusting the Lord.

O Most High

I will give thanks
To the Lord with all my heart
I will sing glorious praise to Your name
I will be glad and exult in You, my Lord
Yesterday, today, forever, You’re the same

O Most High,
You who are my stronghold
When troubles come
You’re my hiding place
O Most High
Those who know You trust You
And You will not forsake the ones
Who seek Your face

Psalm 9:1-2,10-11I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders. 2 I will be glad and exult in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.

9 The Lord also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble; 10 And those who know Your name will put their trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.

From NetBible Ps 9:9-10

  • stronghold[04869] = refuge, high tower or other lofty inaccessible place
  • *Here an “elevated place” refers to a stronghold, a defensible, secure position that represents a safe haven in times of unrest or distress (cf. NEB “tower of strength”; NIV, NRSV “stronghold”).
  • *“To know” the Lord’s “name” means to be his follower, recognizing his authority and maintaining loyalty to him. See Ps 91:14, where “knowing” the Lord’s “name” is associated with loving him.

Psalm 91:1,14 AMP … He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. … Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness—trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

Living Under WITHOUT Boiling Over

March 16, 2014

“Living Under WITHOUT Boiling Over” – This was the title of the sermon last night — do you think the Lord is trying to tell me something??

It was about applying wisdom under difficult situations, a lot of it has to do with my previous post – patience, anger and soft, gentle words!

From Words of Wisdom

  • “soft answer.” is more than a mild response; it is conciliatory, an answer that restores good temper and reasonableness –Proverbs 15:1
  • Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. 20 For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires]. -James 1:19-20 AMP
  • soft or gentle speech – this fits well with the parallel idea of patience (“long of anger”) – through a calm patient persuasion much can be accomplished. – Proverbs 25:15
  • A gentle speech can break down any stiff opposition. – Proverbs 25:15

Ecclesiastes 8:1 AMP … Who is like the wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his countenance is changed.

Wisdom applied, softens one’s face ==> dispels anger

Ecclesiastes 8:12-13 AMP … Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and his days [seemingly] are prolonged [in his wickedness], yet surely I know that it will be well with those who [reverently] fear God, who revere and worship Him, realizing His continual presence. 13 But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not [reverently] fear and worship God.

Apply wisdom in difficult situations, use soft, gentle words to dispel anger ==>it will be well{your face too will be softened} with those who [reverently] fear the Lord.

And finally, a look at how to deal with what others say.

Ecclesiastes 7:20-22 AMP … Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth who does good and never sins. 21 Do not give heed to everything that is said, lest you hear your servant cursing you— 22 For often your own heart knows that you have likewise cursed others.

Be sure to have the patience to taste your words before spitting them out, but don’t taste the words of others too closely!

Words of Wisdom

March 15, 2014

Proverbs 15:1 AMP … A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.

From NetBible Proverbs 15:1

  • soft[07390] answer = tender, gentle
*“soft answer.”  is more than a mild response; it is conciliatory, an answer that restores good temper and reasonableness (W. McKane, Proverbs [OTL], 477). Gideon illustrates this kind of answer (Judg 8:1-3) that brings peace.
  • wrath[02534] = anger, rage, hot displeasure, indignation
  • grievous[06089] = pain, hurt, offense

James 1:19-20 AMP … Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.
20 For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires].

The difference between a smart man and a wise man is that a smart man knows what to say, a wise man knows whether or not to say it. ~ Frank M. Garafola

Proverbs 25:15 AMP … By long forbearance{patience} and calmness of spirit a judge or ruler is persuaded, and soft speech breaks down the most bonelike resistance.

From NetBible Proverbs 25:15

  • patience[0753] = forbearance, self-restraint (of patience)
  • soft[07390] speech = tender, gentle
*soft or gentle speech – this fits well with the parallel idea of patience (“long of anger”) – through a calm patient persuasion much can be accomplished.
  • *The idea of breaking a bone uses the hardest and most firm part of the body in contrast to the “softness of the tongue.” Both are figurative, forming a comparison. A gentle speech can break down any stiff opposition.

Soft, gentle speech requires patience.

Lord Jesus, help me to have the patience to taste my words before I spit them out!

Set Your Mind On Things Above

March 12, 2014

Romans 8:6-7 NASB … For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so.

Philippians 4:8-9 NASB … Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Colossians 3:1-3 AMP … If then you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
3 For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.

Matthew 16:23 NASB … But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.

Set your mind on the Holy Spirit and things above, then you will have life and peace in the Lord.

Ask the Lord to replace any negative thought or lie with His truth in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He Has Made Me Glad

March 9, 2014

Psalm 118:15, 19-21, 24 NETThe voice of rejoicing and salvation{deliverance} is in the tents{tabernacles} of the righteous; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly. … Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter through them, and give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter.  I will give thanks to You, for You have answered me, And You have become my salvation{deliverer}.  … This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

He Has Made Me Glad Lyrics

I will enter his gates with
Thanksgiving in my heart
I will enter his courts with praise
I will say this is the day that the
Lord has made
I will rejoice for he has made me glad

He has made me glad
He has made me glad
I will rejoice for he has
Made me glad, glad, glad
He has made me glad
He has made me glad
I will rejoice for he has
Made me glad

Psalm 100 AMP

A Psalm of thanksgiving and for the thank offering.

1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come before His presence with singing!

3 Know (perceive, recognize, and understand with approval) that the Lord is God! It is He Who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His]! We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless andaffectionately praise His name!

5 For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations.

Psalm 68:3-4 AMP But let the [uncompromisingly] righteous be glad; let them be in high spirits and glory before God, yes, let them [jubilantly] rejoice!

4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name, cast up a highway for{extol} Him Who rides through the deserts—His name is the Lord—be in high spirits and glory before Him!

From NetBible Ps 68:4

  • extol[05549] = lift up a song, cast up a highway/way

Singing praises, rejoicing and extolling the Lord – is like casting up a highway – inviting Him in. This is a good thing to do especially in the desert — for it’s only the Lord’s presence that brings rain into your desert.

Psalm 68:8-9 AMP The earth trembled, the heavens also poured down [rain] at the presence of God; yonder Sinai quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

9 You, O God, did send a plentiful rain; You did restore and confirm Your heritage when it languished and was weary.

Pure Undivided Heart

March 5, 2014

Psalm 86:11 NIV … Teach me Your way, O LORD, and I will walk in Your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.

Psalm 86:11 NLT … Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, that I may honor you.

Psalm 86:11-12 AMP … Teach me Your way, O Lord, that I may walk and live in Your truth; direct and unite my heart [solely, reverently] to fear and honor Your name. I will confess and praise You, O Lord my God, with my whole (united) heart; and I will glorify Your name forevermore.

Teach me Your ways O LORD
And I will walk in Your truth
Grant me purity of heart
That I may honor You
Lord Jesus
With my whole(united) heart
I long to glorify Your name.

Give me an undivided heart
That I may fear Your name
For You alone do I long to worship
Your call alone do I long to hear.

Psalm 51:10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Matthew 5:8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

If our feet are to walk in the Lord’s way and truth, our hearts must wholeheartedly submit to His rule.

Job 23:10-12But He knows the way that I take [He has concern for it, appreciates, and pays attention to it]. When He has tried me, I shall come forth as refined gold [pure and luminous].
11 My foot has held fast to His steps; His ways have I kept and not turned aside.
12 I have not gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed and treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
