Hosanna in the Highest

April 13, 2014

Zechariah 9:9 AMP
9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O Daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you; He is [uncompromisingly] just and having salvation [triumphant and victorious], patient, meek, lowly, and riding on a donkey, upon a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Mark 11:8-10 NIV
8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

The new testament word hosanna[5614] is the greek spelling of the hebrew words yasha’[03467] na’[04994] found in the old testament in only one place. It means ‘Save now, I pray’. It’s a cry for help.

Psalm 118:25-26 NIV Save now[03467] , I pray, O LORD; O LORD, grant us[04994]  success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.

Over the years hosanna changed from being a cry for help to a form of praise – a shout of hope and exultation. So Hosanna to the Son of David means “The Son of David is our salvation! Hooray for the king! Salvation belongs to the king!” And Hosanna in the highest means “Let all the angels in heaven join the song of praise. Salvation! Salvation! Let the highest heaven sing the song!”

Do we greatly rejoice like this – that Jesus is in our midst?

Look at the following verse – do you wear your salvation around your neck – as a “garland of hosannas” ? As songs of great rejoicing and deliverance?

Psalm 32:7 MSG  GOD’s my island hideaway, keeps danger far from the shore, throws garlands of hosannas around my neck.

Psalm 32:7 NASB  You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

This Palm Sunday Let’s rejoice greatly as they did on the first Palm Sunday, that Jesus is in our midst. Let’s celebrate the King of kings.

Hosanna! Hosanna in the Highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
