The Eye = The Lamp

Luke 11:33-36 NASB
33 “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.

From NetBible Lk 11:33

  • * The point is that the light of Jesus’ teaching has been put in public view.
  • see[991] = discern, perceive, understand
    * to turn the thoughts or direct the mind to a thing, to consider,
contemplate, to look/gaze at, to weigh carefully, examine

34 The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness.

From NetBible Lk 11:34
NLT … Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness.

  • lamp[3088] = an eye, like a lamp shows the body which way to turn
  • clear[573] = single(in union, fixed on Christ), whole/sound/healthy(fulfilling it’s office)
  • bad[4190] = diseased, blind, evil

35 Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness.

From NetBible Lk 11:35

  • * This is a present imperative, calling for a constant watch – keep your lamps burning

36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.”

From NetBible Lk 11:36

  • full of light[5460] = bright character
    * from [5457] = full of truth and its knowledge, together with the spiritual
    purity associated with it

.

What are your eyes fixed on?

To be full of light, keep your lamps burning …

    Luke 12:35-36 AMP
35 Keep your loins girded and your lamps burning,
36 And be like men who are waiting for their master to return home from the marriage feast, so that when he returns from the wedding and comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately.

    * a lamp in ancient times was a vessel with oil and a wick carried in the hand to light the path to walk on.

The picture here is that as we walk, our hand (which speaks of our works) needs to hold up (apply/do) the lamp (which is the Word)
==> then our eyes will see the path before us!

    * the spiritual person with the single eye(connected to Christ)
uses God’s word as a lamp to light his path and so walks straight

*the spiritually blind person walks a crooked path

    * the spiritually blind may not know they are blind because they judge without God’s word or Spirit
==>they have no lamp or light ….
