The House of David

Were both Joseph and Mary in the House{line} of David?

Matthew 1 traces the legal line of Jesus through the kings to Joseph

Matthew 1:6, 16 NASB
6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. …
… 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.

From NetBible Mt 1:16

  • The word “of whom” Jesus was born is feminine in Greek, indicating (naturally enough) that Jesus was born of Mary, not Joseph. The Greek also says “Jacob begat Joseph” – making it 100% clear that Joseph’s father’s name was Jacob.

Luke 3 traces the physical bloodline of Jesus to Mary

Luke 3:23 NASB
23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,

Joseph could not have 2 fathers that’s why this says “supposed” making it clear he was not “begat” from Heli. Legally Joseph here is representing Mary – whose father then must be Heli …

Another clue that Luke 3 is the bloodline through Mary is Zerubbabel – the last person who stands in both bloodlines.

*** God used these two lines of ancestry for Jesus because He placed a curse on the seed of Jechoniah (also known as Coniah or Jehoiachin) as recorded in Jeremiah 22:30. That line was royal line of David, so if the Messiah was to qualify for the throne of David (Lk 1:31-33), he had to be of the legal line of David, yet not of his seed.

Zerubbabel was the last standing person in both lines

*** Jechoniah was the last legitimate king of Judah and the royal House
of David goes through him. His only successor was Zedekiah, his uncle
who was appointed not by right, but by an occupying Babylonian ruler (2
Kings 24:17-20). Even at the end of his life, the Babylonians recognized
Jechoniah as the legitimate king of Judah (2 Kings 25:27-30)

*** Because Zerubbabel was a descendant of the last legitimate king of
Judah, he could be legitimately recognized as the ruler (though not king)
    of the returning exiles.

Zerubbabel did not usher in a rule as prophesied by Haggai –>
this prophecy is yet to be fullfilled –>
Zerubbabel represents a type and looks forward to future fulfillment.
