Unbelief = Healing Block

Mark 16:17-18 NASB
17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Looking at the above passage alone could lead to the assumption that a miracle of healing is guaranteed every time someone has the boldness of faith to lay hands on the sick. Is this true?

Mark 6:1-6 NASB
Jesus went out from there and *came into His hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. 2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him. 4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” 5 And He[Jesus] could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.

Even Jesus’ healing power was hindered at times – unbelief(refusing to believe, trust who Jesus is) – seems to block this power. Jesus had “revelation” that unbelief was the block here. The above passage seems to show that both revelation and teaching are needed for this unbelief to be removed and healing to occur.

If confronted with unbelief also remember the prayer of the father whose son was plagued with convulsions and in need of deliverance.

Mark 9:22-24, 28-29 NASB
22 It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”
… 28 … His disciples began questioning Him[Jesus] privately, “Why could we not drive it out?” 29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer.”

    Another thing that comes to mind is this – healing can occur in Jesus’ name without the leading of the Holy Spirit – this is dangerous! This also shows the danger of the assumption that a miracle of healing is guaranteed every time someone has the boldness of faith to lay hands on the sick.

    Matthew 7:21-23 NASB
    21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

      Glad the Lord spoke to you thru this — did you notice the comment I added? I didn’t realize at first how dangerous the assumption(or teaching) that a miracle of healing is guaranteed every time someone has the boldness of faith to lay hands on the sick was.

      I’ve also seen this assumption misused – if healing does not occur
      => sometimes the person being prayed for is accused of not having enough faith. This is also not true – as the above shows revelation by Jesus to those praying or asking for healing may be needed to identify the “block”.

        Lately, I’ve realized also that miracles are for a purpose. If there are unbelievers who will benefit from what will happen, like they will believe in Jesus…then mostly likely miracles will happen when we pray…but again, not all the time.

        Yes – I will post some more tomorrow – I was looking at another block – unforgiveness – and the Lord showed me another example in scripture where the physical healing was used to confirm His preaching and teaching => His word.
