Guard My Heart & Words

Proverbs 18:21 AMP
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].

Death and life are in the power of the tongue
A harvest is reaped from one’s speech
Death or life
Good or evil.

The fruit of one’s mouth flows from what fills the heart.

Luke 6:45 AMP
45 The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.

Above all else, keep and guard your heart
=> for from it flows not only fruit that satisfies but
=> the springs of life.

Proverbs 18:20-21 AMP
20 A man’s [moral] self {stomach}shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words{harvest of his lips} he must be satisfied [whether good or evil].
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].

From NetBible Prov 18:20

  • * Two images are used in this proverb: the fruit of the mouth and the harvest of the lips. They are synonymous; the first is applied to the orchard and the second to the field. The “mouth” and the “lips” are metonymies of cause, and so both lines are speaking about speech that is productive.
  • * “A man’s moral self” = This is rendered “his stomach” because of the use of שָׂבַע (sava’, “to be satisfied; to be sated; to be filled”), which is usually used with food (cf. KJV, ASV “belly”).

=> Productive speech is not just satisfying – it meets the basic needs of life. There is a practical return for beneficial words.

Proverbs 4:23 AMP
23 Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.

From NetBible Prov 4:23

  • NET … Guard your heart with all vigilance,  for from it are the sources of life.
  • NKJV … Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
  • BBE … And keep watch over your heart with all care; so you will have life.
  • NLT … Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.

Set a guard, O Lord, before my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips. 4 Incline my heart not to submit or consent to any evil thing or to be occupied in deeds of wickedness with men who work iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties.
