The Secret Place of the Stairs

Song of Solomon 2:14 KJV … O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.

From NetBible Song 2:14

  • clefts[02288] = hiding place, place of concealment, safety, refuge
  • secret place[05643] = hiding place, shelter, cover
  • stairs[04095] = steep or inaccessible place, pathway

What is this secret place of the steep stairway?

The secret place is in the cleft of the Rock. Remember Moses? Where he asked to see the Lord’s glory(Ex 33)? The Lord told him to stand on the Rock. Then the Lord put him in the cleft and covered him with His hand. The Rock is Christ(1Co 10:4). The cleft in the Rock is the secret place of the Most High, beneath the shadow of His wings(Ps 91).  It’s interesting that the name Most High associated with this secret place is from a root meaning to climb or ascend(see below). This is a place that can only be reached through Jesus Christ – you can’t get there on your own.

Psalm 40:1-3 AMPC … I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up out of a horrible pit [of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock, steadying my footsteps and establishing my path. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear [with great reverence] And will trust confidently in the Lord.

Psalm 91:1 AMPC … He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].

From NetBible Ps 91:1

  • Most High[05945] = sovereign one, sovereign King, elevated above all
*from [05927] = to go up, ascend, climb
