Judge Rightly Now!

Isaiah 28:21 NASB … For the Lord will rise up as at Mount Perazim, He will be stirred up as in the valley of Gibeon, to do His task, His unusual task, and to work His work, His extraordinary work.

From NetBible Is 28:21

  • This probably alludes to David’s victory over the Philistines at Baal Perazim. See 2 Sa 5:20 , 1 Chr 14:11
=>The Lord broke through the enemies like the sudden breakthrough of waters(his wrath)
  • This probably alludes to the Lord’s victory over the Canaanites at Gibeon, during the days of Joshua. See Jsh 10:10-13.
=>The sun stood still while Joshua battled Canaanites
=>The Lord suddenly threw down hailstones(his wrath) on the enemies
or at Gibeon after Baal Perazim 1 Chr 14:16
  • God’s judgment of his own people is called “his peculiar(unusual) work” and “his strange task,” because he must deal with them the way He treated their enemies in the past.

An interesting verse that shows how the Lord suddenly both acts on behalf of His people and brings judgement. It is a warning to His people to judge rightly. If you look at the rest of Isaiah 28 – you’ll see the Lord is judging His own people starting with the priests and prophets – this is His “unusual work”. The sobering reason => they did not render proper judgement using God’s measuring line, His word. It is a warning urging God’s people to judge rightly now!

Isaiah 28:7,16-17 NASB … And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink: The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink; They reel while having visions, They totter when rendering judgment. …
… 16 Therefore thus says the Lord God,
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. 17 “I will make justice the measuring line And righteousness the level; Then hail will sweep away the refuge of lies And the waters will overflow the secret place.

1 Corinthians 11:31-32 NASB … But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
