Whitewashed Wall

Ezekiel 13:5 NASB … You have not gone up into the breaches, nor did you build the wall around the house of Israel to stand in the battle on the day of the LORD.

From NetBible Ezk 13:5

  • KJV … You have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge{hedged the hedge(protective wall)} for the house of Israel to stand in battle on the day of the LORD.

build the wall => hedged the hedge of protection

Only the wall built straight and upright,  will stand in the battle. A wall that has been built by rightly dividing God’s word and using it as a plumb line to judge{especially prophecies}. –Heb 5:11-14

In Ezekeil 13 the wall will not stand because it is “unstable” – not structurally sound because the people are listening to prophetic messages that they want to hear.

Ezekiel 13:10 NET … This is because they have led my people astray saying, “All is well,” when things are not well{‘Peace!’ when there is no peace}. When anyone builds a wall without mortar, they coat it with whitewash.

False prophetic messages are like a nice coat of whitewash on a structurally unstable wall!

So what is to be done about these whitewashed walls?

Ezekiel 13:2 NASB … Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration, ‘Listen to the word of the LORD!

The footnote in the NetBible for the above verse references
Numbers 16:28
=>*False prophets speak from their own inspiration from the secret desire to seize power

Look what the Lord does to these false prophets and their “households”…

He does a “new” and “unusual” thing
=>the earth opens and swallows them up …
 –Num 16:23-35

Also notice that there is a separation before this happens – the Lord’s people are instructed to get away from these false prophets and their messages, otherwise they may be destroyed along with them …

This seems like a pretty serious warning and it leads back to the message from Isaiah 28:21. Prophesying or praying Isaiah 28 over people, asking the Lord to rise up like Isaiah 28:21 – what exactly does this mean? Seems before you pray this or receive it – you better make sure which side of the plumb line you are on – otherwise aren’t you really calling for the Lord’s judgement to fall{His new and unusual act in this scripture}?!

Without the warning to line up individually and corporately, people are not encouraged to check how they line up and correct what does not line up. This also is at the end of Ezekiel 13.

Ezekiel 13:22-23 NASB … This is because you have disheartened the righteous person with lies (although I have not grieved him), and because you have encouraged the wicked person not to turn from his evil conduct and preserve his life. 23 Therefore you will no longer see false visions and practice divination. I will rescue my people from your power, and you will know that I am the Lord.

Sounding the warning will “rescue” some from being “swallowed up” by this type of false prophet and whitewashed wall(message).

One Response to “Whitewashed Wall”

  1. khollandsblog Says:

Amos 4:12 NASB … “Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel.”

    From NetBible Amos 4:12

    • * Israel thought they were meeting the Lord at the sanctuaries, yet they actually had misunderstood how he had been trying to bring them back to himself. Now Israel would truly meet the Lord – not at the sanctuaries, but face-to-face in judgment.

Part of what was not done to prepare to meet the Lord is to repair the breaches in the protective wall. It is these very breaches where the enemy comes in that they try to escape through when judgement comes – instead of going through the “gate” => Jesus.

Amos 4:3 AMPC … And you shall go out through the breaches [made in the city’s wall], everyone straight before her, and you shall be cast forth into Harmon [an unknown place of exile], says the Lord.

This points back to Ezekiel 13 – one type of breach is trusting in false prophetic messages or false teachings => trusting in what appears to be results rather than the Holy Spirit empowered word{Jesus}.

Ezekiel 13:2 NASB … Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration, ‘Listen to the word of the LORD!

These false messages and teachings must be exposed to have the breach repaired – exposed by the Holy Spirit empowered word by the prophetic ministry{watchmen}.

Ephesians 5:6-13 NASB … Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
