Consider This Sign

June 28, 2016

Luke 2:12 NASB … This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Consider this sign
a humble simple sign
a sign to deny self …

Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done. -Lk 22:42

If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. -Lk 9:23

Luke 2:34-35 NASB …  And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

The King’s sword(1Ki 3:24)
Pierces even the purest of souls (Mary).

The sword(word of God) judges, reveals
… and dividesEph 6:17;He 4:12-13
Hearts embracing Christ and His word revealed
Hearts secretly corrupt also revealed
… to the one an aroma of death
… to another an aroma of life.2Co 2:15-16

Christ the priceless cornerstone to those who believe
But to those who disobey His word
… a Stumbling Block
… a Rock of Offense.

1 Peter 2:6-8 NASB … For this is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” 7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,” 8 and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.

… 10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as [surely as] the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring forth{blossom}, so [surely] the Lord God will cause rightness and justice and praise to spring forth{fully bloom} before all the nations [through the self-fulfilling power of His word].

Jesus is our Dayspring from on High – our Sonrise after the dark!

Luke 1:78-79 NET … Because of our God’s tender mercy the dawn will break upon us from on High, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

From NetBible Lk 1:78

  • God’s tender mercy is seen in the deliverance of those in darkness by Jesus who is the light of dawning day.
=>2Cor 4:6 NET … For God, who said “Let light shine out of darkness,”  is the one who shined in our hearts to give us the light of the glorious knowledge of God in the face of Christ.
  • Dayspring: The Messiah is pictured as a saving light that shows the way. The Greek term was also used to translate the Hebrew word for “branch” or “sprout”
  • Zec 6:12 NET … Then say to him, ‘The Lord who rules over all says, “Look – here is the man whose name is Branch,  who will sprout up from his place and build the temple of the Lord. =>describes the rise of the Messiah, already referred to in this manner in Zec 3:8 (Is 11:1; 53:2; Jer 33:15). In the immediate context this refers to Zerubbabel, but the ultimate referent is Jesus (Jn 19:5).
  • Jn 19:5 NET … So Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.  Pilate  said to them, “Look, here is the man!” =>Pilate’s words constituted an unconscious allusion to Zec 6:12. Pilate (unknowingly and ironically) presented Jesus to the nation under a messianic title.
