Mercy Triumphs Over Judgement

James 2:12-13 NASB … So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.

What does mercy triumphs over judgement mean? Many think this means to overlook sin or false teaching and just “love” on people – do not judge! Is this true?

How does one receive mercy? Is it unconditional? Consider the following.

Proverbs 28:13 AMPC … He who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes his sins will obtain mercy.

Proverbs 16:6 AMPC … By mercy and love, truth and fidelity [to God and man—not by sacrificial offerings], iniquity is purged out of the heart, and by the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord men depart from and avoid evil.

From Zondervan KJV Study Bible

  • By mercy AND truth: When the Lord’s people repent of sin and bring their lives into accord with His will, the Lord forgives and withdraws His judgement(Is 1:18-19; Is 55:7; Jer 3:22; Ezk 18:23; Ezk 18:30-32; Ezk 33:11-16; Hos 14:1-4). Thus it can be said that mercy and truth “purge” sin=> they turn away God’s wrath against it.
  • fear the Lord: see Pro 1:7
  • Faithfulness/obedience to the Lord(the law of liberty) along with repentance brings the Lord’s mercy (Ja 1:25,2:12)

Notice how obtaining mercy is linked to repentance and truth. Mercy triumphs over judgement when one sees the truth of their sin and turns to the Lord and repents. Those who cover or conceal their sins will not receive mercy.

Looking more closely at the fear of the Lord we see how harmful it is to overlook false teaching and let it go uncorrected=> this is not mercy but foolishness.

Proverbs 1:7 AMPC … The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.

From Zondervan KJV Study Bible

  • fear the Lord: A loving reverence for the Lord includes submission to His Lordship and to the commands of His word(Jn 14:15-16).
  • fools: Those who hate knowledge(Pro 1:22) and correction of any kind(Pro 12:1), who trust in themselves instead of God(Pro 28:26; Pro 3:5-6). Fools die for lack of wisdom/judgement(Pro 10:21) and instruction/correction(Pro 5:23)

    mercy has to do with forgiveness

    also why mercy triumphs over judgement
    => forgiveness restores relationships

    this does not mean do not judge false teaching
    or sin
    => judge with the intent to restore, show mercy & forgiveness
    => this is how mercy triumphs and relationships are restored

    If you do not judge false teaching or sin and attempt to correct it, there is no chance for mercy, forgiveness or restoration.

    Proverbs 3:5-8 NASB
    5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    And do not lean on your own understanding.
    6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
    And He will make your paths straight.
    7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
    Fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
    8 It will be healing to your body
    And refreshment to your bones.

    From NetBible Prv 3:7

    • *If one fears the Lord and turns away from evil, then he is depending on the Lord and not wise in his own eyes. There is a higher source of wisdom than human insight.

    1 Corinthians 11:18-19 NET … For in the first place, when you come together as a church I hear there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For there must in fact be divisions among you, so that those of you who are approved may be evident.

    From NetBible 1Co 11:19
    =>divisions=heresies or sects
    =>this testing process(presence of heresy) will bring truth into the open and confirm it.
