Not by Bread Alone

Luke 4:1-4 NASB

The Temptation of Jesus
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”

From Zondervan KJV Study Bible

  • v3: The devil always tempts where vulnerable and makes the temptation attractive.
=> Mt 4:3: Jesus is tempted to use His powers for His own ends
  • v4: Dt 8:3: Jesus will live by doing God’s will, and will take no shortcuts=> not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
=> Mt 4:4: Jesus relied on His Father; not His own miraculous power for the provision of food; His food was to do the will of the father who sent him (Jn 4:34)

Without true bread – the ability to hear and know the voice of Jesus=> there is no power to live!

Luke 1:37 AMP … For with God nothing is ever impossible and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment.

John 6:32-35 NASB … Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

From NetBible Jn 6:32
