Consuming Fire

A song:
Consuming fire, consuming fire
Down in my soul, down in my soul
His word like a fire
His word like a fire
Down in my soul, down in my soul
Can’t be contained …

Jeremiah 23:28-29 NKJV … The prophet{false} who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?” says the Lord.
29 “Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord,
“And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

From NetBible Jer 23:28-29

  • NLT … 28 Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between chaff and wheat!
  • NET … 29 My message is like a fire that purges dross!  It is like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces!  I, the Lord, so affirm it!

From Biblehub

  • Matthew Henry Commentary
    23:23-32 Men cannot be hidden from God’s all-seeing eye. Will they never see what judgments they prepare for themselves? Let them consider what a vast difference there is between these prophecies and those delivered by the true prophets of the Lord. Let them not call their foolish dreams Divine oracles. The promises of peace these prophets make are no more to be compared to God’s promises than chaff to wheat. The unhumbled heart of man is like a rock; if not melted by the word of God as a fire, it will be broken to pieces by it as a hammer. How can they be long safe, or at all easy, who have a God of almighty power against them? The word of God is no smooth, lulling, deceitful message. And by its faithfulness it may certainly be distinguished from false doctrines.

There is a difference between chaff and wheat!

His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire. -Lk 3:17

Hearts of stone vs. Hearts of flesh

I will give them singleness of heart(undivided heart) and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their hearts of stone and give them tender hearts(hearts of flesh) instead, Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God. –Ezk 11:19-20

Hearts of stone, hardened hearts
=> unhumbled, unpurged, uncleansed
=> smashed by the hammer of His word
=> burned like chaff

Hearts of flesh, tender hearts
=> melted made pliable
=> humbled, purged, cleansed by the fire of His word

Deuteronomy 4:24The LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

From NetBible Dt 4:24

  • *For God to be “jealous” means that his holiness and uniqueness cannot tolerate pretended or imaginary rivals. It is not petty envy but response to an act of insubordination that must be severely judged

Prayer:
Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be *sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

From NetBible Phil 1:10

  • sincere[1506] = found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light, tested as genuine, unspotted
  • *from heile (the sun’s ray) and 2919; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested
    as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.

What a beautiful picture of a sincere pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing through His word. This is how “love” abounds!

    Interesting how the fire is both His word cleansing/purifying or judgement. Also note that both His word and His judgement is a fire that can not be put out or “shut up”.

    The prayer at the bottom is cool=>it links “LOVE” abounding with submitting to the cleansing of His word.

    Christ or Judgment
    Hebrews 10:26-27,31 AMPC … For if we go on deliberately and willingly sinning after once acquiring the knowledge of the Truth, there is no longer any sacrifice left to atone for [our] sins [no further offering to which to look forward]. 27 [There is nothing left for us then] but a kind of awful and fearful prospect and expectation of divine judgment and the fury of burning wrath{consuming fire} and indignation which will consume those who put themselves in opposition [to God]. …
    … 31 It is a fearful (formidable and terrible) thing to incur the divine penalties and be cast into the hands of the living God!

    Hebrews 6:1-8 AMPC … Therefore let us go on and get past the elementary stage in the teachings and doctrine of Christ (the Messiah), advancing steadily toward the completeness and perfection that belong to spiritual maturity. Let us not again be laying the foundation of repentance and abandonment of dead works (dead formalism) and of the faith [by which you turned] to God, 2 With teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long, long ago.] 3 If indeed God permits, we will [now] proceed [to advanced teaching]. 4 For it is impossible [to restore and bring again to repentance] those who have been once for all enlightened, who have consciously tasted the heavenly gift and have become sharers of the Holy Spirit, 5 And have felt how good the Word of God is and the mighty powers of the age and world to come, 6 If they then deviate from the faith and turn away from their allegiance—[it is impossible] to bring them back to repentance, for (because, while, as long as) they nail upon the cross the Son of God afresh [as far as they are concerned] and are holding [Him] up to contempt and shame and public disgrace. 7 For the soil which has drunk the rain that repeatedly falls upon it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated partakes of a blessing from God. 8 But if [that same soil] persistently bears thorns and thistles, it is considered worthless and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

    Matthew 7:15-16 AMPC … 15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves. 16 You will fully recognize them by their fruits. Do people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

    Seems thorns and thistles(Heb 6:1-8) represent those preaching only the elementary truths of Christ …

    Compare this to preaching the whole counsel.

    Acts 20:27-29 AMPC … For I never shrank or kept back or fell short from declaring to you the whole purpose and plan and counsel of God. 28 Take care and be on guard for yourselves and the whole flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you bishops and guardians, to shepherd (tend and feed and guide) the church of the Lord or [d]of God which He obtained for Himself [buying it and saving it for Himself] with His own blood. 29 I know that after I am gone, ferocious wolves will get in among you, not sparing the flock

    YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM BY THEIR FRUIT => what they preach!
