A Sign of the End

Matthew 24:3-5 NASB … As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead{deceive} many”.

From NetBible Mt 24:5

  • * I am the Christ = one who has been anointed

The sign of the end = deception
Many will say “I am Christ” = I am anointed
False prophets appear with signs and wonders
… to deceive many
Mt 24:11,24
Because of “lawlessness”, the love of many will grow coldMt 24:12

Take heed that no one deceives you! –Mt 24:4

Many are already here calling out –  I am Anointed, follow me  be anointed!
They say – anyone can prophesy and heal in the name of Jesus!Jesus has warned us ahead of time – DO NOT believe them
DO NOT follow them! –Mt 24:23

Protection from deception =  Know the Jesus the Spirit of Truth
=> and how to apply His word! –Jn 14:6;Jn 16:13;Jn 14:26;Jn 17:17

1 Corinthians 12:29-30, 17  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[? Do all interpret? …

… 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?

Matthew 7:21-24 NASB … “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.

    An example of false prophecy=> promises anyone can prophesy, heal and have prosperity(wealth?):

    Fear not, people of God, the Lord is with you, whether you feel Him or not. Live your life in love, faith and righteousness and You will know the Partnership of Heaven helping you overcome and prosper. Do not ignore the whispers of Heaven. This is how I am stretching your faith. Put aside doubts and fears and be bold for God and you will experience His Peace, Power & Prosperity in every sphere of life.

    Today, the Lord gives you two special promises
    (i) 3 John 2 – Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.

    =>3 John 1:2-4Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I was very glad when brethren came and testified to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

    => notice how this prayer is related to walking in the Truth
    => the focus is on spiritual health by walking in Truth and then physical health
    => the focus is not about prosperity(money) or physical healing as the prosperity gospel people would have you believe.

    (ii) the promises to the Laodicean church members who refuse to succumb to lukewarmness (Rev. 3)
    (a) intimacy with God and His Senior Partnership (v.20&21);
    (b) prosperity through faith and doing right; (v.18a);

    =>Revelation 3:18(a)I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich

    Are these promises of prosperity about wealth? Gold? Riches – money? Look at the verse right before v18.

    Revelation 3:17Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked …

    Here in this verse the Laodiceans are called poor even though they are wealthy=>Laodicea prided itself on three things: financial wealth, an extensive textile industry, and a popular eye-salve which was exported around the world

    => prosperity here is NOT about gold, wealth/money

    => Matthew 5:3Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.{God blesses those who are poor in sprit and realize their need for Him}

    => Laodicea instead of relying on their wealth, should repent v19 and rely on the Lord = “be poor in spirit”
    =>then they would inherit the “richest reward” => the kingdom of heaven

    (c-) protection of your reputation and gaining the trust of others, because of your integrity; (v.18b);
    (d) vision to know the way forward, to know the way to win and be successful in life and ministry, to know how to solve problems and be victorious, (v.18c);
    (e)
    *3 John 2 – Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.

    *An ear to hear what the Spirit is saying = IF YOU MAKE TIME TO LISTEN & OBEY! knowledge to bring God’s prophetic revelation of His MInd, His Heart & His Word to people & situations that will release His Power, Blessing & Resources (v.22).

    1 Corinthians 12:29-30, 17Are all apostles?

    Mark 4:24-25 AMPC … And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you–and more [besides] will be given to you who hear. 25For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away [by force],

    =>Listening to false prophecy affects your hearing
    this is why there is a famine of hearing!

    Amos 8:11Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of HEARING[08085] {to hear intelligently, perceive, understand, obey} the words of the LORD.

    =>These days are HERE!

    Amos 8:12-14They shall wander from sea to sea,
    And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, But shall not find it.
    13 “ In that day the fair virgins And strong young men
    Shall faint from thirst.
    14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria,
    Who say, ‘ As your god lives, O Dan!’
    And, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives!’
    They shall fall and never rise again.”

    The Lord seems to be telling us that the judgement for not eating the true bread{not discriminating what we eat} => is a famine for the hearing the words of the LORD.

    There is no shortage of bread{truth} —>solid food.

    Ears are dull from drinking only milk –Heb 5:13-14
    From thirsting for water{spirit} without eating solid food.

    Dull ears do not know how to use the King’s sword –1Ki 3:24
    They are unable to distinguish good from evil or discern truth
    They are unable to test the spirits. –1Jn 4:1-4

    People will stagger from sea to sea And from the north even to the east; They will go to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, But they will not find it. -Amos 8:12

    God’s voice will not contradict His Word!

    Numbers 23:19 NASB … “God is not a man, that He should lie,
    Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

    It is impossible for God to lie –Heb 6:18;Titus 1:2
    The Spirit of Prophecy = The testimony of Jesus –Rev 19:10
    Jesus came into the world, to testify to the truth –Jn 18:37

    => True prophecy will line up with the Truth
    => God’s Word is Truth. –
    Jn 17:17

    True prophecy will at times encourage and comfort –1Cor 14:3
    True prophecy will also at times, cause people to hear true words from the Lord that turn them away from evil and sin. –Jer 23:21-22;Jn 16:8;1Jn 3:8;1Cor 14:24

    Beware if repentance is always missing and all you hear is “Peace Peace” – prosperity! –Jer 6:14

    1 Corinthians 14:1-3Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation.

    From NetBible 1Cor 14:3

    • prophesy[4395] = to prophesy, to be a prophet, speak forth by divine inspirations
      => to foretell, to predict
      => to forthtell, to teach, refute, reprove, admonish,
      comfort, praise(utter during worship) others

    Life Worthy of the Gospel
    27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

    I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire! –Rev 3:18

    If you stand up for God’s word you will go thru the fire!

    Let your spiritual house be strong – built on a firm, mature, complete foundation …

    James 1:2-4Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finsh its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

    James 1:3-4 AMPC … Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. 4 But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.

    May the testing of your faith produce pure refined gold. Tested genuine faith is much more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire! –1Pe1:7; Rev 3:18
