Genesis 22:14And Abraham called the name of the place, The–LORD–Will–Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided.”

From NetBible Gen 22:14

  • The–LORD–Will–Provide[03070] = Jehovah-jireh = “Jehovah sees”
*from [03068] and [07200]; Jehovah will see (to it) => the Lord sees and provides for the necessities of His servants
    * a symbolical name for Mount Moriah => Here Solomon’s temple was built, on the spot that had been the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite (2 Sam. 24:24, 252 Chr. 3:1
=>”Mount Moriah” of the Chronicles is identical with the “mountain” in “the land of Moriah” of Genesis, and that the spot on which Jehovah appeared to David, and on which the temple was built, was the very spot of the sacrifice of Isaac.
=> now covered by “Dome of the Rock”
  • provided[07200] = seen, looked at, perceived, have vision

How Did Jesus Deal With Territorial Spirits?

February 25, 2017

This teaching on territorial spiritual warfare is going around. Specifically that territorial spirits must be identified by name, bound and cast into the pit before evangelism can take place in a specific area. This is done on a lot of prayer walks. Is this biblical? How did Jesus deal with territorial spirits?

Mark 5:1-17 NASB The Gerasene Demoniac
5 They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 2 When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him, 3 and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. 6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7 and shouting with a loud voice, he *said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!” 8 For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he *said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12 The demons implored Him, saying, “Send us into the swine so that we may enter them.” 13 Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.
14 Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 They *came to Jesus and *observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened. 16 Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17 And they began to implore Him to leave their region.

  • Notice v10 => these do seem to be territorial spirits.
  • Notice v6-8=> Jesus was commanding the unclean spirits out of the man before they revealed that they were territorial. It’s interesting that Jesus’ first command to come out appears not to have worked. Also notice these territorial spirits were inside a man and knew who Jesus was.
  • Notice v9=> Jesus does find out their name, but does not appear to use it in allowing the spirits to come out and go into the pigs. He also does not order them to leave the territory and go to the pit of hell.
  • Notice v13=> what do these spirits going into the pigs and over a steep bank into the sea represent? => The final judgement where satan, and those who follow him are thrown into the lake of fire(Rev 20:10, 14-15)-the abyss(Lk 8:30-31)

Why didn’t Jesus just cast these territorial spirits out and into the pit of hell? This account seems to have the answer=> it was not yet the appointed time of final judgement (Mt 8:29).

Is there any danger in christians taking authority and casting demons out into the pit before the time of judgement?
=> Notice that even the archangel Michael did not dare bring judgement against the territorial spirits he fought against.

Jude 1:8-10 NASB … Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties. 9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.

  • Notice v10 => the warning of being destroyed by passing judgements on the devil and his angels of light(2Cor 11:14).
  • A similar warning here(2Pe 2:11-12) seems to imply it’s the false prophets who encourage this passing judgement on the devil and his angels of light.
  • There is a cross reference from these verses to Daniel 10:13,21
=> This is the verse most often quoted in support of identifying by name, binding and casting territorial spirits into the pit
=> also notice what Daniel prayed – he wasn’t even aware of the battle at the time of this prayer
Daniel 10:12 NASB … Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words.
=> notice the focus of this prayer is not on confronting spirits directly, but on asking humbly for understanding

Luke 10:19-20 NASB … Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.

  • Notice the focus in these verses=> it’s not on the fact that we have authority, but rather on being humble and rejoicing in the fact that your name is written in the book of life. While we do have authority over the serpent it appears we have to be careful how we use it.
  • Taking authority when it’s not appropriate has severe consequences(Lk 11:24-28)
  • Casting demons to the pit = passing judgement on the devil and his angels of light before the appointed time and risks the person doing this being destroyed or deceived(Jude 1:8-10;2Pe 2:11-12)=> if casting out is appropriate and directed by the Lord it is better to cast out and direct to the feet of Jesus for Him to deal with.

A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.

  • A cheerful heart = A merry, joyful, glad heart
  • Good medicine = promotes healing
  • A downcast spirit = A broken, crushed, depressed spirit
=> one’s will to go on is beaten down by circumstances
  • “dried up” bones signify unhealthiness and lifelessness (Ezek 37).

From NetBible Ps 23:3
He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

… Washed by the water of the word –Eph 5:26
… Shining bright as stars in procession –Dan 12:3

The Doe of the Morning. –Ps 22:1
Song of Songs 8:14 AMPC [Joyfully the radiant bride turned to Him, the one altogether lovely, the chief among ten thousand to her soul, and with unconcealed eagerness to begin her life of sweet companionship with Him, she answered] Make haste, my beloved, and come quickly, like a gazelle or a young hart [and take me to our waiting home] upon the mountains of spices!

Isaiah 60:19-20 NKJV … “The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the Lord will be to you an everlasting light, and your God your glory. 20 Your sun shall no longer go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself; For the Lord will be your everlasting light, and the days of your mourning shall be ended.

Just as the moon has no light of it’s own-but reflects the sun=>I have no light of my own & must reflect the Son!
Who is this-that arises{grows} like the dawn?=>MyDove-MySpotlessBride-The Doe of the Morning-Radiant-ShiningBright!

Song of Songs 6:10  Who is this that arises{appears, grows} like the dawn, beautiful{fair} as the full moon{white, purified one}, pure{bright, radiant} as the sun, awesome as an army with banners{majestic as the stars in procession}?

From NetBible Sos 6:10

  • dawn[07837] = daybreak, morning light, sunrise
Ps 22:1 => Doe of the Morning
  • full moon[03842] = white, purified one
  • pure[01249] = bright, clean
  • *  stars in procession are often compared to the heavenly armies. This nuance is clear in the light of the parallelism with the dawn, moon, and sun.

Hosea 6:3 NASB … So let us know{acknowledge}, let us press on to know{acknowledge} the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering[03384] the earth.

From NetBible  Hos 6:3Ps 32:8

  • rain watering/teach[03384] = to shoot arrows, to throw water, rain, to flow as water, to instruct, to point out (as if by aiming the finger)

=> To those who press on to know and acknowledge the Lord with an undivided{pure} heart, He will come like rain to water/teach personally. They will see “eye to eye”, with “the eyes of His dove”(Song 4:1, 1:15,5:12;Ps 32:8;Ps 86:11)

=> these will dwell in the shadow of His wings, with His eye upon them, as the apple of His eye, these will minister to the Most High!(Ps 91:1,4;Ps 101:6;Ps 17:8)

Lord help me to press on with a pure heart, that I may see “eye to eye” with You and minister to You. Keep me as the apple of Your eye, hidden beneath Your wings(Ps 17:8). In Jesus name.

Remember the Lord in the midst of opposition!
Behold, His hand is not too short to save
Nor is His ear to dull to hear.Is 59:1

Call on the name of the Lord
The name of the LORD is a strong tower
The righteous run to it
And are safe{set safely on high}.Pro 18:10

The Lord lifts up a standard against him!

Isaiah 59:1,19 AMPC … Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened at all, that it cannot save, nor His ear dull with deafness, that it cannot hear …
… 19 So [as the result of the Messiah’s intervention] they shall [reverently] fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight [for He will come like a rushing stream which the breath of the Lord drives].

Recall the Lord in the midst of opposition-His name a strong tower-The righteous run into it&are set safe on high!

When the enemy comes in like a flood-Keep calm & Let the Lord teach U to ride the waves! Deep calls to Deep!

Word Study

From NetBible Job 37:21

  • And now the light is not seen, for it is dark because of the clouds; but a wind comes, clearing{cleansing} them away.
  • * The light here must refer to the sun in the skies that had been veiled by the storm. Then, when the winds blew the clouds away, it could not be looked at because it was so dazzling. Elihu’s analogy will be that God is the same – in his glory one cannot look at him or challenge him.
  • clearing{cleansing}[02891] = purify, heal

From NetBible Hos 6:3

  • Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.
  • spring rains water[03384] = to direct, teach, instruct

From NetBible 2Sa 23:4

  • [He]Is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, Through sunshine after rain.
  • light[0216] = light of instruction
  • morning[01242] = bright joy after night of distress

From NetBible Dt 32:2

  • My message shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the light rain upon the tender grass, and as the showers upon the herb.
  • showers[07241] = prophetic influence!!!

Look what awakens the dawn of a new day!

Psalm 57:7-9 AMPC … My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is steadfast and confident! I will sing and make melody. 8 Awake, my glory (my inner self); awake, harp and lyre! I will awake right early [I will awaken the dawn]! 9 I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations.

Growing in Grace and Truth

  1. Read: 2Peter 3:1-7
    Above all know-remember this:
=> In the last days scoffers will deny the promise of Christ’s return.
=> Their argument against Christ’s return was this: since it has not occurred yet it will not happen.
=>They “willfully” forgot the words of the Lord = about the flood as divine intervention.
=> v7: By His word the present heavens and earth are being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
=>I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown. -Rev 3:11
  2. Read: 2Peter 3:8-12

  3. Read: 2Peter 3:13-18
