Abrahams Bosom Study

Luke 16:19-31
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22 Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham *said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

  1. Who is this parable aimed at? Who is the rich man?
v19: The rich man loved to live in splendor and dress up his outward appearance
    .
Luke 16:14-15Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him. 15 And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.
    .
Luke 11:43 … Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places.
    .
Matthew 23:27-28“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
    .
  2. Who is the rich man’s Father?
v24: Rich man cries to Father
    V25: Abraham answers
    .
John 8:39-40,44-47They[Jews Pharisee] answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus *said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. …
… 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
    .
  3. Where did the rich man go?
    v23: Hades – a place of torment
    .
  4. What is meant by the bosom of Abraham?
    v25 : a place of comfort
    .
    From NetBible Study Dictionary

v22-23: refers to the custom of reclining on couches at table, which was prevalent among the Jews, an arrangement which brought the head of one person almost into the bosom of the one who sat or reclined above him. To “be in Abraham’s bosom” thus meant to enjoy happiness and rest at the banquet in Paradise(Lk 23:43(with Christ/repentance), 2Cor 12:2-4(3rd heaven), Rev 2:7; Jn 17:3(eternal life)). The rabbis divided the state after death into a place for the righteous and a place for the wicked.

*Thus, John leaned on the bosom of Jesus at supper (Jn 21:20).

    *Jesus leans on the Father’s bosom(Jn 1:18)
    .
Matthew 8:11-12And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 but the sons of the kingdom{Jews like Jn 8} will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    From the Old Testament

    Hagar was in Abraham’s bosom(Gen 16:5)

The Lord carries the lambs close to His heart/bosom(Isa 40:11)

  5. Who is the Father of Lazarus? What does the name Lazarus mean?
v20: The name Lazarus[2976] means “whom God helps”
    .
Galatians 3:6-9 NASB … Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
    .
  6. What was promised to Abraham?
    .
Genesis 12:3 NASB … And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
    .
Genesis 22:16-18 NASB … “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you[Abraham] have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
    .
  7. What is Abraham’s seed? Who are Abraham’s children?
    .
    Galatians 3:16
Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
    .
Jesus is the promised seed – the hope of mankind through Mary(the womans seed (Gen 3:15)
    See: Genealogy of Jesus
See: Prophecy: The Promised Seed(Line of Mary)
    .
Jesus is the son of Abraham through the royal bloodline(Mt 1:1).
See: Prophecy: Royal Line Through David’s Son Solomon
    .
Romans 5:17 … For if by the transgression of the one[Adam], death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
    .
  8. What did Abraham do by faith?
    .

    Hebrews 11 =>
    The Triumphs of faith!

***

=> the rich man is the son of Abraham in the flesh but not in the spirit of faith

=> Lazarus is the son of Abraham in the spirit of faith

Hebrews 11:13-16 … All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

    Resurrection

The Bible clearly tells us that the bodies of believers AND unbelievers will be resurrected (Jn 5:29-29; Acts 24:15; Dan 12:2).

There seems to be fairly universal agreement that the bodies of unbelievers will not be resurrected until after the millennium or 1000 yr reign of Christ, which occurs after the Tribulation. When they are raised, they will be judged at the Great White Throne judgment, and then cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity (Rev 20:5,11-15).

=> The rich man in Hades can not escape(Lk 16:26)

    ***

When the veil was torn and Christ rose – many OT saints who had died were raised. (Mt 27:51-53)

The Bible in the NT makes it clear that those who belong to Christ will receive their new bodies each in his own order: Christ, the firstfruits; then when Christ comes, those who belong to him. (1 Cor 15:21-23, 50-54; 1 Thes 4:13-18).

The bodies of those in Christ(righteous) who have died will be resurrected and glorified first, and “then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds”. For those in Christ(righteous) who had died previously, this will be the time when their soul/spirit, will be reunited with their body which had been “sleeping.” “Sleep,” is often used in the Bible as a euphemism for death when speaking of believers. This metaphorical usage by its very nature emphasizes the hope of resurrection: Believers who died will one day “wake up” out of death(1Thes 4:13).

The first resurrection is complete when Christ comes to set up the millennial reign – at this time the righteous who died during the tribulation are raised (Rev 20:4-5)

The second resurrection, then, is the raising of all unbelievers; the second resurrection is connected to the second death. It happens after the millennial reign(Rev 20:13-15). It corresponds with Jesus’ teaching of the “resurrection of damnation” (Jn 5:28-29).
