Nailed to the Cross

Colossians 2:12-15 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
12 [Thus you were circumcised when] you were buried with Him in [your] baptism, in which you were also raised with Him [to a new life] through [your] faith in the working of God [as displayed] when He raised Him up from the dead. 13 And you who were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (your sensuality, your sinful carnal nature), [God] brought to life together with [Christ], having [freely] forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away the handwriting of the note (bond) with its legal decrees and demands which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us). This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing it to [His] cross. 15 [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross].

24 He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.
Exodus 15:25-26 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
25 And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree which he cast into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There [the Lord] made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there He proved them, 26 Saying, If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God and will do what is right in His sight, and will listen to and obey His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon you which I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord Who heals you.

From NetBible 1Jn 1:5

  • 3 Claims: 1 John 6, 8, 10 NASB
    • 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
    • 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
    • 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
  • 3 Counter Claims: 1 John 7, 9, 2:1 NASB
    • 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin
    • 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    • 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.

James 1:17 AMPC … Every good gift and every perfect (free, large, full) gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of all [that gives] light, in [the shining of] Whom there can be no variation [rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [as in an eclipse].

Revelation 21:22-23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all] and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun nor of the moon to give light to it, for the glory (splendor, radiance) of God has illumined it, and the Lamb is its lamp and light. 24 The nations [the redeemed people from the earth] will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring into it their glory. 25 By day (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed [in fear of evil]; 26 and they will bring the glory (splendor, majesty) and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and nothing that defiles or profanes or is unwashed will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices abominations [detestable, morally repugnant things] and lying, but only those [will be admitted] whose names have been written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Psalm 5:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 In the morning, O Lord, You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will prepare [a prayer and a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait [for You to speak to my heart].

In the morning, O Lord,
– A time of prayerPs 88:13
– A time of sacrifice
– A time of deliverance and joy
Ps 30:5
– A time of singing
 –Ps 59:16
You will hear my voice –
I will direct it to You.

I will watch and expectantly wait
For You to speak to my heart
=>I will look up
And trust in You Lord!
Ps 27:14

From NetBible Ps 5:3
My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up{wait expectantly/watch for an answer. }.

  • In the morning is here viewed as the time of prayer (Ps 59:16; 88:13) and/or of deliverance&joy (Ps 30:5).
  • look up[06822] = keep watch, observe closely, await expectantly
Micah 7:7But as for me, I will watch expectantly/look up[06822] for the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.

From Biblehub Ps 27:14

  • Wait on the Lord = to trust in the Lord; to rely upon Him
    Expect His timely help
  • Be of good courage = be strong – do not faint- do not be dismayed. Still hope and trust in the Lord.
  • The Lord will strengthen your heart and uphold you in the wait

Choose Wisely – The “Better” Part

Luke 10:38-42 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Martha and Mary
38 Now while they were on their way, Jesus entered a village [called Bethany], and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was continually listening to His teaching. 40 But Martha was very busy and distracted with all of her serving responsibilities; and she approached Him and said, “Lord, is it of no concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to help me and do her part.” 41 But the Lord replied to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered and anxious about so many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good{better} part [that which is to her advantage], which will not be taken away from her.”

Has anyone ever made statements like this to you?

  • I am serving all “alone”; you are only listening at Jesus feet
    => you are not helping!
  • You seem only to be worshipping, praying and listening for the Lord’s words => Why aren’t you “busy” serving?

Another interesting thing was pointed out to me recently
=>Martha did welcome Jesus into her home, but was too “busy” serving to ask Jesus what He wanted her to do. She actually interrupts Jesus to tell Him what to do!
Choose wisely – the better part!

Word Study
From NetBible Luke 10:38-42

  • Bethany = where Martha, Mary & Lazarus lived Jn 11:1
*Martha welcomed Jesus into her home as her guest
  • Mary took the initiative to sit at Jesus feet and listen to His words
  • Martha was distracted with much serving
*Distracted means to be pulled away by something
  • Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things
    * double vocative Martha, Martha communicates emotion indicates urgency
  • But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.
    * good treated as a positive for comparative (“better”)
part[3310] = distinct from the whole – an assigned portion, share
