From NetBible Ps 143:8
Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness/loyal love in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

  • * Here “loyal love” probably stands for an oracle of assurance promising God’s intervention as an expression of his loyal love.
  • * The morning is sometimes viewed as the time of divine intervention ( Ps 30:5; 59:16; 90:14).
  • * To lift up your soul to the Lord means “to desire; to long for the Lord”

From NetBible Ps 80:3
O God, restore us! Cause Your face to shine upon us! Then we will be delivered!

Carried Day by Day!

6 Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you, 7 Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.
“His eyes never slumber,

His heart never ceases to beat with love,
and His shoulders are never weary
of carrying His people’s burdens.” ~Charles H. Spurgeon

From Ps 68:19

  • Blessed be the Lord, Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour,
Who daily loads us with benefits, who daily bears our burdens, and carries us in His arms
The God of our salvation, who delivers us!

From Commentary Ps 68:19

  • It is by God’s favour and might, and not by the sword, that deliverance from the enemies actually threatening the nation is to be expected.
God who daily takes our burden for us, i.e., either the burden of trial or of sin. (Comp. a somewhat similar passage, Psalm 99:8, “thou art a God who liftest for us,” i.e., as Authorised Version, “forgivest us.”) But it is quite possible to render, if any put a burden on us, God is our help.

From Commentary Isa 46:4

  • The nurse – even the mother – soon grows tired of carrying the child, and leaves him to shift for himself. But God’s tender care for his people lasts from their infancy, through their boyhood and manhood, to their old age. The everlasting arms never weary. God’s watchfulness, his providence, his protection, never fail. I have made, and I will bear. The maker of a thing has naturally regard to what he has made, loves it, desires its good, seeks to defend and save it.

Isaiah 50:7 Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be dismayed. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone{flint}, determined to do his will. And I know that I will triumph.

From Commentary
For the Lord God will help me; rather, but the Lord God will help me. I shall not be left always in the hands of my enemies. In this confidence the Servant rests, and is not confounded, even when the worst happens to him. He sets his face like a flint; i.e. makes it hard, impassive, expressionless, and at the same time determined, fixed not to give way (comp. Ezekiel 3:8-9).

*from a primitive root, Greek [5614] = hosanna
  • He will quiet you[02790] = make silent, give rest
    * “he causes [you] to be silent by his love,” that is, “he soothes [you] by his love.” The present translation follows the LXX and assumes an original reading יְחַדֵּשׁ (yÿkhaddesh, “he renews”) with ellipsis of the object (“you”).

From NetBible Ps 37:7
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

  • fret[02734] = to burn, kindle, to be angry

Faith “Sees” with an Understanding Heart

June 20, 2019

Hebrews 11:1 Amplified Bible (AMP)
11 Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].
Hebrews 11:1 NKJV … Now faith is the *substance[5287] of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

  • substance[5287] = a setting or placing under, firm foundation, confidence, firm trust, assurance
*from a compound of [5259] = place under
and [2476] = make to stand, firm, fixed, established on sound foundation
  •  Hebrews 1:3
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature{substance[5287]}, and upholds all things by the word of His power. …
  •  Hebrews 3:14
For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance{substance[5287]} firm until the end …

    • partakers[3353] = partners, companions, sharing in work
    • hold fast[2722] = keep secure, keep firm possession of{from going away}, keep (in memory)

Look how faith in Jesus Christ affects what our “spiritual eyes” see!
Interesting, looking at Matthew 13 – we see the opposite of faith = hearts that do not “see”. The key seems to be how receptive your heart is to receiving, understanding and applying God’s word. It is also a warning to not devalue God’s word …
Matthew 13:10-16 Amplified Bible (AMP)
10 Then the disciples came to Him and asked, “Why do You speak to the crowds in parables?” 11 Jesus replied to them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 For whoever has [spiritual wisdom because he is receptive to God’s word], to him more will be given, and he will be richly and abundantly supplied; but whoever does not have [spiritual wisdom because he has devalued God’s word], even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 This is the reason I speak to the crowds in parables: because while [having the power of] seeing they do not see, and while [having the power of] hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand and grasp [spiritual things]. 14 In them the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,

‘You will hear and keep on hearing, but never understand;
And you will look and keep on looking, but never comprehend;
15 For this nation’s heart has grown hard,
And with their ears they hardly hear,
And they have [tightly] closed their eyes,
Otherwise they would see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart, and turn [to Me]
And I would heal them [spiritually].’
16 But blessed [spiritually aware, and favored by God] are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.
See how all this is linked with walking in obedience.
1 John 2:5-6 Amplified Bible (AMP)
5 But whoever habitually keeps His word and obeys His precepts [and treasures His message in its entirety], in him the love of God has truly been perfected [it is completed and has reached maturity]. By this we know [for certain] that we are in Him: 6 whoever says he lives in Christ [that is, whoever says he has accepted Him as God and Savior] ought [as a moral obligation] to walk and conduct himself just as He walked and conducted Himself.
2 Corinthians 5:7 Amplified Bible (AMP)
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight [living our lives in a manner consistent with our confident belief in God’s promises]—
Matthew 13:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
23 And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands and grasps it; he indeed bears fruit and yields, some a hundred times [as much as was sown], some sixty [times as much], and some thirty.”

Ephesians 1:17-19 Amplified Bible (AMP)
17 [I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son]. 18 And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God’s people), 19 and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength.

Treasure in your Heart

Treasure in your heart!

Matthew 6:21Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Psalm 119:11Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!

Proverbs 2:1-5 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
1 My son, if you will receive my words and treasure up[06845my commandments within you,

5 Then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God.

Mustard Seed – Small Beginning

June 15, 2019

Matthew 13:31-32 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
31 Another story by way of comparison He set forth before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. 32 Of all the seeds it is the smallest, but when it has grown it is the largest of the garden herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and find shelter in its branches.
Mark 4:30-32 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
30 And He said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use to illustrate and explain it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all seeds upon the earth; 32 Yet after it is sown, it grows up and becomes the greatest of all garden herbs and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air are able to make nests and dwell in its shade.
Luke 13:18-19 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
18 This led Him to say, What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the wild birds found shelter and roosted and nested in its branches.

1 Peter 1:6-9 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
6 [You should] be exceedingly glad on this account, though now for a little while you may be distressed by trials and suffer temptations, 7 So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed. 8 Without having seen Him, you love Him; though you do not [even] now see Him, you believe in Him and exult and thrill with inexpressible and glorious (triumphant, heavenly) joy. 9 [At the same time] you receive the result (outcome, consummation) of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
What is this “mustard seed”? This small seed of faith?
=>Faith in the gospel!
What is the “finished” result of this ever growing faith?
=>salvation = eternal life = an eternal home = tree of life = mustard tree!

Word Study
From NetBible Mt 13:32

  • becomes[1096] a tree = to be made, finished
  • *The point of the parable seems to be that while the kingdom of God may appear to have insignificant and unnoticeable beginnings (i.e., in the ministry of Jesus), it will someday (i.e., at the second advent) be great and quite expansive. The kingdom, however, is not to be equated with the church, but rather the church is an expression of the kingdom. Also, there is important OT background in the image of the mustard seed that grew and became a tree: Ezek 17:22-24 pictures the reemergence of the Davidic house where people can find calm and shelter. Like the mustard seed, it would start out small but grow to significant size.

Kingdom of Heaven like Treasure

June 8, 2019

Matthew 13:44 Amplified Bible (AMP)
Hidden Treasure
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a [very precious] treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid again; then in his joy he goes and sells all he has and buys that field [securing the treasure for himself].

Luke 8:9-11,15 Amplified Bible (AMP)
9 Now His disciples began asking Him what this parable{Sower} meant. 10 And He said, “To you [who have been chosen] it has been granted to know and recognize the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that though seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 11 “Now [the meaning of] the parable is this: The seed is the word of God [concerning eternal salvation]. …
… 15 But as for that seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word with a good and noble heart, and hold on to it tightly, and bear fruit with patience.

=> only those who find God’s word, bury it in their hearts{soil in a field} and bear good fruit know Christ and the kingdom of heaven!

Look how the treasure hid in a field{good soil hearts} is related to treasure in “jars of clay”!
Ephesians 2:6-7 Amplified Bible (AMP)
6 And He raised us up together with Him [when we believed], and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, [because we are] in Christ Jesus, 7 [and He did this] so that in the ages to come He might [clearly] show the immeasurable and unsurpassed riches of His grace in [His] kindness toward us in Christ Jesus [by providing for our redemption].
2 Corinthians 4:6-7 Amplified Bible (AMP)
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give us the Light of the knowledge of the glory and majesty of God [clearly revealed] in the face of Christ.
7 But we have this precious treasure [the good news about salvation] in [unworthy] earthen vessels [of human frailty], so that the grandeur and surpassing greatness of the power will be [shown to be] from God [His sufficiency] and not from ourselves.

Luke 17:20-21 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
20 Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He replied to them by saying, The kingdom of God does not come with signs to be observed or with visible display, 21 Nor will people say, Look! Here [it is]! or, See, [it is] there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you [in your hearts] and among you [surrounding you].
