Humbly Receive the Word

October 25, 2016

James 1:21-22 NASB … 21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

God who formed worlds by the power of His Word
Speaks through the Scriptures His truth to be heard;
And if we read with the will to obey,
He by His Spirit will show us His way. —D. De Haan

God speaks through His Word to those who listen with a heart to obey.

Doctrine of the Nicolatians

May 18, 2016

Ephesus was commended for testing and finding false apostles – the Nicolaitions were an example – they were not tolerated => found among the Ephesus Church.

Revelation 2:2,6 NASB
Message to Ephesus Church
2 ‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false;
6 Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

The message to the Pergamum Church gives us a clue how these false apostles – like the Nicolaitions operated and were found to be false. It’s by the sword of the Spirit – the word of God(Eph 6:17) that these are tested. There IS an underlying false doctrine that must be exposed and corrected. If ignored it allows the throne of Satan to dwell among them.  Balaam gives us a clue to the spirit behind the false doctrine of the Nicolaitians. Balaam used the mixture of both the spirit of divination and the Spirit of the true God(Num 24:1-3). There is some evidence that the underlying doctrine of the Nicolaitions was the Gnostic doctrine => especially those who teach the heresy that the divine Christ joined the man Jesus at baptism and left Him as He died(Kenosis). This is also true in today’s churches. This heresy denies the “name of Jesus” by denying His deity while on earth before His baptism and as He died.  These false prophets who introduce heresy are “blots and blemishes” that can  not be tolerated and must be removed(2Pe 2:1-3,13-15).

Revelation 2:13-16 NASB
Message to Pergamum Church
13 ‘I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols and to commit acts of immorality. 15 So you also have some who in the same way hold the teaching{doctrine} of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.

The Philadelphia Church was commended because they kept Jesus’ word and did not deny His name. They held fast to the Truth – the doctrine of Christ.

Revelation 3:8,11 NASB
Message to the Philadelphia Church
8 ‘I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name. …
… 11 I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown.

John 8:31-32 AMPC … So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. 32 And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.

2 John 1:9 AMPC … Anyone who runs on ahead [of God] and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ [who is not content with what He taught] does not have God; but he who continues to live in the doctrine (teaching) of Christ [does have God], he has both the Father and the Son.

Titus 1:9 AMPC
Qualifications of Elders
9 He must hold fast to the sure and trustworthy Word of God as he was taught it, so that he may be able both to give stimulating instruction and encouragement in sound (wholesome) doctrine and to refute and convict those who contradict and oppose it [showing the wayward their error].

Truth and Biblical Love

May 6, 2016
Without obeying the Truth through the Holy Spirit can there be any real/sincere biblical love for each other? For the Father and the Son?

1 Peter 1:21-23 AMPC … Through Him you believe in (adhere to, rely on) God, Who raised Him up from the dead and gave Him honor and glory, so that your faith and hope are [centered and rest] in God. 22 Since by your obedience to the Truth through the [Holy] Spirit you have purified your hearts for the sincere affection of the brethren, [see that you] love one another fervently from a pure heart.  23 You have been regenerated (born again), not from a mortal origin (seed, sperm), but from one that is immortal by the ever living and lasting Word of God.

From NetBible 1 Pe 1:22

  • NKJV … Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart
  • BBE … And as you have made your souls clean, being ruled by what is true, and loving one another without deceit, see that your love is warm and from the heart
  • sincere[505] = genuine, without hypocrisy
  • pure[2513] = clean
    – purified by fire
    – like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit
    – free from every admixture of what is false, sincere genuine
  • “having purified,” as the preparation for the love described in the second half of the verse.

John 14:6,23-24 … Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. … Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me”.

From NetBible Jn 14:23

  • home[3438] = dwelling place, abode
    * to make an (one’s) abode
    * metaph. of the God the Holy Spirit indwelling believers
    *from Greek[3306] = residence

Stand Firm!

April 16, 2015

Exodus 14:13-14 AMP
13 Moses told the people, Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians you have seen today you shall never see again.
14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.

Don’t be afraid
Stand Firm
Confident
Undismayed

The Lord fights for those who love Him
Stand firm on His Truth!

1 John 2:3-5 NKJV
The Test of Knowing Him
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

Psalm 91:14 AMP
14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has a personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness—trusts and relies on Me, knowing I will never forsake him, no, never].

  • eternal God[06924] = everlasting, from the beginning, ancient
  • refuge[04585] = dwelling place, habitation

  • NET … Trust in the Lord from this time forward, even in Yah, the Lord, an enduring protector!
  • NKJV … Trust in the LORD forever, For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength.

Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth

August 27, 2014

2 Timothy 2:14-18 AMP
14 Remind [the people] of these facts and [solemnly] charge them in the presence of the Lord to avoid petty controversy over words, which does no good but upsets and undermines the faith of the hearers.

If there is a controversy, do not argue about things that don’t matter.

15 Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.

Do not use “opinion” to argue or correct a false teaching – use God’s word “rightly divided”!

16 But avoid all empty (vain, useless, idle) talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.
17 And their teaching [will devour; it] will eat its way like cancer or spread like gangrene. So it is with Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18 Who have missed the mark and swerved from the truth by arguing that the resurrection has already taken place. They are undermining the faith of some.

Public false teaching must be refuted or corrected publicly. If the names of false teachers are known – they are announced publicly so that the faith of the immature is not undermined and the false teaching does not spread.

This is why the following qualification for an elder is so important!

Titus 1:9 AMP
9 He must hold fast to the sure and trustworthy Word of God as he was taught it, so that he may be able both to give stimulating instruction and encouragement in sound (wholesome) doctrine and to refute and convict those who contradict and oppose it [showing the wayward their error].

.

Word Study
.
From NetBible 2Tim 2:15

  • study[4704] = make every effort with all diligence
  • approved[1384] = shown to be genuine, not counterfeit
  • workman[2040] = teacher, laborer (for God)
  • rightly dividing[3718] = to cut straight, to proceed on a straight path, to make smooth and straight, to teach correctly

From the study above, rightly dividing the word of God,

  • Takes continual effort
  • reveals the difference between being genuine and counterfeit
  • makes paths straight!
  • “cuts” straight

This last thing – “cuts straight” made me think of placing blocks together to build something. If the blocks are not cut straight, they won’t “stand” or fit together very easily. They will be easy to knock over!

Ephesians 4:14-16 AMP
14 So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and cleverness of unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead.
15 Rather, let our lives lovingly express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
16 For because of Him the whole body (the church, in all its various parts), closely joined and firmly knit together by the joints and ligaments with which it is supplied, when each part [with power adapted to its need] is working properly [in all its functions], grows to full maturity, building itself up in love.

This study shows ==> If you rightly divide and use God’s words – you won’t “fit” with those who don’t(those who only use opinion or feelings).

Peace Amid the Storm

April 12, 2011

Isaiah 4:5-6Then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering{canopy}. It will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, and a place of refuge, for a shelter from the storm and rain.

Peace is not freedom from the storm
Peace is knowing where to find refuge amid the storm.

John 14:27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 16:33I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Day After Day

March 4, 2011

Matthew 6:24-25, 28 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. THEREFORE I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? … Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;

Who have you chosen to follow?
Day after day choose to follow Jesus
Consider the lilies and rest in His arms.

Day after day
His mercies new, great is His faithfulness! -Lam 3:23

Day after day
The LORD is wonderfully good
… to those whose hope is in Him
… to those who wait for Him
… to those who diligently seek Him
… to those who trust Him. -Lam 3:25

Cast all your anxiety on Him, release the weight of it.
He will sustain you BECAUSE He cares for you. -1Pe 5:7; Ps 55:22

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens. Selah -Ps 68:19 NIV

Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day He carries us in His arms. -Ps 68:19 NLT
