Jesus Is Baptized

Luke 3:21-22 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Jesus Is Baptized
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

From Zondervan KJV Study Bible

  • v21: praying = Only Luke notes Jesus’ praying at the time of his baptism. Jesus in prayer is one of Luke’s special themes(Lk 5:16, 6:12,9:18, 9:28-29,11:1,22:32,22:41,23:34,23:46).
  • More than one reason for Jesus Baptism
    Mt 3:15 notes
    1. To fulfill all righteousness=> all God’s righteous requirements for the Messiah were fully met in Jesus(Ps 2:7;Is 42:1;He 1:5;Lk 9:35;Jn 12:28) The descending dove and the Father’s words confirmed this.
    2. John made a public announcement of the Messiah and the beginning of His ministry(Jn 1:31-34)
    3. By His baptism Jesus completely identified Himself with man’s sin(tho He needed no repentance or cleansing from sin) becoming out substitute(2Co 5:21)
    4. His baptism was an example to his followers
  • The trinity is seen here: Jesus the Son, God the Father and the Holy Spirit(dove)
