Worship in spirit and truth
Be washed by the water in the word
Pure hearts see and love fervently …
Love one another fervently from a pure heart. –1Peter 1:22
All who have this hope in Him{Jesus} purify themselves, just as He is pure. –1John 3:3

Word Study
From NetBible Jn 4:23
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

  • worship[4352]proskuneo = to kiss the hand towards one (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand), in token of reverence, bow down-prostrate oneself(or kneel) in homage – worship, adoration
    • Psalm 2:12 … Kiss the Son = in trembling kiss His feet, pay homage in purity
    • The homage is to the Lord of Psalm 2:2 and to the Son of Psalm 2:7 — the Messiah King. Homage, kissing a King also implies submission. Like above: worship[4352]proskuneo this is to pay homage in recognition of royalty, to show submission to a king, to be under the king’s reign – like a dog licking his master’s hand.

From NetBible Eph 5:26
so that He{Jesus} might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word

  • sanctify[37] = make holy
    * purify: free from the guilt of sin
    * purify: internally by renewing of the soul

  • John 17:17Sanctify[37] them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
  • John 17:19And for their sakes I sanctify[37] Myself, that they also may be sanctified[37] by the truth
  • 1John 3:3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He{Jesus} is pure.
    • 1 John 3:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 And everyone who has this hope [confidently placed] in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (holy, undefiled, guiltless).

From NetBible Mt 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

  • pure[2513] = clean, sincere, blameless, innocent
    * purified by fire
    * free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt
    * free from falsehoods
    * like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit (Jn 15:2)

    • 1Peter 1:22-23 Since you have purified{cleansed} your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren{believers}, love one another fervently with a pure[2513] heart. 23  for you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God.
    • Prayer:
      Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be *sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

      From NetBible Phil 1:10

      • sincere[1506] = found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light, tested as genuine, unspotted
      • *from heile (the sun’s ray) and 2919; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested
        as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.

What a beautiful picture of a sincere pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

    • I am being transformed by a renewed mind!!
Romans 12:1-2 AMP … Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].
  • see[3700] = to look at, to behold
    * to gaze – with wide-open eyes, as at something remarkable

Matthew 5:8 Amplified Bible (AMP)
8 “Blessed [anticipating God’s presence, spiritually mature] are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God.

Gold Refined

Matthew 5:8 … Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

From NetBible Mt 5:8

  • pure[2513]= clean, purified by fire
    — in a similitude, like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit

Gold refined in the fire –Pro 17:3
Tested, proven faith more precious than much gold –
1Pe 1:7
Purified by obedience to the Truth thru the Spirit
 –1Pe 1:22
Faith alive and controlled by the Holy Spirit –Gal 5:25
Following closely, keeping in step –
Job 23:11
Treasuring His living words more than daily bread –
Job 23:12;Mt 4:4
Unafraid, willing to be led even through fire –
Isa 43:2
Tested, proven faith shines through Jesus Christ our Lord –1Pe 1:7
Yielding much fruit, showing who you belong to –
Jn 15:8
Bringing honor glorifying our Father. –Mt 5:16

I counsel you to buy gold from Me refined and tested by fire
That you may be rich{in Christ} –Rev 3:18

1 Peter 1:6-7 AMPC … [You should] be exceedingly glad on this account, though now for a little while you may be distressed by trials and suffer temptations, 7 So that [the genuineness] of your faith may be tested, [your faith] which is infinitely more precious than the perishable gold which is tested and purified by fire. [This proving of your faith is intended] to redound to [your] praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) is revealed.

Job 23:10-12 AMPC … But He knows the way that I take [He has concern for it, appreciates, and pays attention to it]. When He has tried me, I shall come forth as refined gold [pure and luminous].

11 My foot has held fast to His steps; His ways have I kept and not turned aside. 12 I have not gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed and treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

James 1:2-4 AMPC … Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations. 3 Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. 4 But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.

To See Jesus is to Become Like Him

February 14, 2014

1 John 3:2-3 AMP
2 Beloved, we are [even here and] now God’s children; it is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be [hereafter], but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall [as God’s children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him just as He [really] is.

1 John 2:28 AMP … And now, little children, abide (live, remain permanently) in Him, so that when He is made visible, we may have and enjoy perfect confidence (boldness, assurance) and not be ashamed and shrink from Him at His coming.

==>Believers will become more and more like God than they are now by seeing Him more and more clearly as He really is.

1 Corinthians 13:12 AMP … For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection [of reality as in a riddle or enigma], but then [when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood [by God].

2 Corinthians 3:18 AMP … And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.

3 And everyone who has this hope [resting] on Him cleanses (purifies) himself just as He is pure (chaste, undefiled, guiltless).

==>This future hope of seeing Jesus face to face, more and more, as He really is, should encourage believers to submit their hearts to the Lord’s purifying fire/pruning.

1 John 2:6 AMP … Whoever says he abides in Him ought [as a personal debt] to walk and conduct himself in the same way in which He walked and conducted Himself.

Luke 6:40 AMP …  A pupil is not superior to his teacher, but everyone [when he is] completely trained (readjusted, restored, set to rights, and perfected) will be like his teacher.

Psalm 24:3-4,7 NKJV … Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy [dwelling]place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. … Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.

Matthew 5:8 NKJV … Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

==>This hope of seeing Jesus face to face, that is why the pure in heart are so blessed.

A heart that so longs for the Lord’s presence that it willingly submits to the Lord’s purifying fire or pruning. A heart that longs to hear and do the Lord’s will alone. That is the heart that will increasingly see Jesus face to face and become like Him. That is the hope that will purify and transform us even now, day by day, if we allow it.

Word Study
From NetBible 1 Jn 3:2

  • * What believers will be is to be revealed later.  In light of the mention of the parousia(2nd coming) 1Jn 2:28, it seems likely that an eschatological revelation of the true character of believers is in view here.
  • *The phrase we will be like him, because we will see him just as he is has been explained two ways: (1) believers will really become more like God than they now are, and will do this through seeing God as he really is; or (2) believers will realize that they are already like God, but did not realize it until they see him as he is. One who sees a strong emphasis on realized eschatology in the Gospel of John and the Epistles might opt for the second view, since it downplays the difference between what believers already are in the present age and what they will become in the next. It seems better, though, in light of the statement in 3:2a that “what we will be has not yet been revealed” and because of the reference to Christ’s parousia(2nd coming) in 1Jn 2:28, that the author intends to distinguish between the present state of believers and what they will be like in the future. Thus the first view is better, that believers really will become more like God than they are now, as a result of seeing him as he really is.

From NetBible 1Co 13:12

  • * “we are seeing through [= using] a mirror by means of a dark image.” Corinth was well known in the ancient world for producing some of the finest bronze mirrors available. Paul’s point in this analogy, then, is not that our current understanding and relationship with God is distorted (as if the mirror reflected poorly), but rather that it is “indirect,” (i.e., the nature of looking in a mirror) compared to the relationship we will enjoy with him in the future when we see him “face to face” (cf. G. D. Fee, First Corinthians [NICNT], 648). The word “indirectly” translates the Greek phrase ἐν αἰνίγματι (ejn ainigmati, “in an obscure image”) which itself may reflect an allusion to Num 12:8 (LXX οὐ δι᾿ αἰνιγμάτων), where God says that he speaks to Moses “mouth to mouth [= face to face]…and not in dark figures [of speech].” Though this allusion to the OT is not explicitly developed here, it probably did not go unnoticed by the Corinthians who were apparently familiar with OT traditions about Moses (cf. 1 Cor 10:2). Indeed, in 2 Cor 3:13-18 Paul had recourse with the Corinthians to contrast Moses’ ministry under the old covenant with the hope afforded through apostolic ministry and the new covenant. Further, it is in this context, specifically in 2 Cor 3:18, that the apostle invokes the use of the mirror analogy again in order to unfold the nature of the Christian’s progressive transformation by the Spirit.

From NetBible 1 Jn 3:3

  • *In this context the use of ἁγνίζω would remind the readers that, if they have the future hope of entering the Father’s presence (“seeing him as he is” in 1 Jn 3:2), they need to prepare themselves by living a purified lifestyle now, just as Jesus lived during his earthly life and ministry (cf. 1Jn 2:6). This serves to rebut the opponents’ claims to moral indifference, that what the Christian does in the present life is of no consequence.
1 John 2:6 (see note there). Since purity of life is mentioned in the context, this almost certainly refers to Jesus in his earthly life and ministry as the example believers should imitate (a major theme of the author throughout 1 John).
