The Word – Logos & Dabar

August 24, 2013

John 1:1-3In the beginning was the Word[3056], and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

From NetBible Jn 1:1

  • The Word[3056]logos = speech uttered by a living voice, the sayings of God
*In John, denotes the essential Word of God, Jesus Christ, the personal wisdom and power in union with God, his minister in creation and government of the universe, the cause of all the world’s life both physical and ethical, which for the procurement of man’s salvation put on human nature in the person of Jesus the Messiah, the second person in the Godhead, and shone forth conspicuously from His words and deeds.
This term was familiar to the Jews and in their writings long before a Greek philosopher named Heraclitus used the term Logos around 600 B.C. to designate the divine reason or plan which coordinates a changing universe. This word was well suited to John’s purpose in John 1.

“In the beginning” echoes Genesis 1:1. Notice the power of the divine word in creation. Notice also that both God’s spoken word and God’s Spirit are involved in creation.

Genesis 1:1-3In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

Notice the wording in Isaiah 55:11 – the word from God’s mouth will not return void. The creative power of His divine word spoken from His mouth will accomplish what He intends.

Isaiah 55:11 … So will My word[01697] be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty{void}, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

From NetBible Isa 55:11

  • word[01697] = speech, saying, utterance
-from [01696] = speak, declare, promise, sing
  • accomplish[06213] = fashion, make, produce

Hebrews 4:12For the word[3056] of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two–edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ephesians 6:17 … And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word[4487]rhema of God.

2 Timothy 3:16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching[1319], rebuking[1649], correcting[1882] and training[3809] in righteousness …

2 Timothy 4:2Preach the word[3056]; be ready in season and out of season; reprove[1651], rebuke[2008], exhort[2008], with great patience and instruction[1322].

From NetBible He4:12;Eph6:17;2Tim 3:16,4:2

Notice in both the OT & NT the word written or spoken is living – the Holy Spirit is present to breathe and delivers it with creative power. The Hebrew has a broad definition and no difference between prophetic utterance or written record. In the OT the word is associated with wisdom, in John the wisdom{light} is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:30 AMP …  But it is from Him that you have your life in Christ Jesus, Whom God made our Wisdom from God, [revealed to us a knowledge of the divine plan of salvation previously hidden, manifesting itself as] our Righteousness [thus making us upright and putting us in right standing with God], and our Consecration [making us pure and holy], and our Redemption [providing our ransom from eternal penalty for sin].

Proverbs 5:1-2 AMP … My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you] … That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation].
KJV … bow thine ear

Bow your ear is the opposite of listening without application. Bow you ear, humbly desire to hear and apply wisdom so that you may act with foresight & speak with insight!
