Compassion Mixed With Fear

September 7, 2017

Jeremiah 8:5 Why then has this people, Jerusalem, Turned away in continual apostasy? They hold fast to deceit, They refuse to return.

Jude 1:3, 22-23Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. …
… 22 Show compassion(mercy) to those whose faith is wavering. 23 save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have compassion(mercy) with fear(of God), hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.

Earnestly contend for the faith
Show compassion to those whose faith is wavering
Faith comes by hearing
And hearing by the word of God.  –Rom 10:17

Show compassion mixed with fear of God
To those in apostasy
In danger of the fire of judgement.

1 Timothy 4:16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Contend for theFaith-Show compassion mixed with fear to those in apostasy-Guard Ur Life&Doctrine=>save any who hear
Have compassion-Snatch from fire-Contend for theFaith=>Encourage sound doctrine&Refute any who oppose it. –Titus 1:9

Word Study
From NetBible Jer 8:5

  • * apostasy = mistaken beliefs, deception, allegiance to false gods

From NetBible Jude 1:3

  • faith[4102] =  conviction/belief of the truth
  • * The term “faith” has a variety of meanings in the NT. Here, the faith refers to the doctrinal content embraced by believers rather than the act of believing. Rather than discuss the points of agreement that Jude would have with these believers, because of the urgency of the present situation he must assume that these believers were well grounded and press on to encourage them to fight for this common belief.
  • “common salvation” *Jude starts by affirming that the gospel the Gentiles had received from Paul was the same as the one the Jewish Christians had received from the other apostles (our common salvation). But in the midst of writing this letter, Jude felt that the present crisis deserved another, shorter piece. The crisis, as the letter reveals, is that the false teachers whom Peter prophesied have now infiltrated the church. The letter of Jude is thus an ad hoc letter, intended to confirm the truth of Peter’s letter and encourage the saints to ground their faith in the written documents of the nascent church, rather than listen to the twisted gospel of the false teachers. In large measure, the letter of Jude illustrates the necessity of clinging to the authority of scripture as opposed to those who claim to be prophets.

From Biblehub Jude 1:22 & Jude 1:23

  • * None but those who “keep themselves” are likely to “save” others.
  • * Snatch out of fire = the imminent danger (as of one who is asleep in a burning house) in which the fire of their sins keeps them. This is the second class: those who can still be rescued, but by strong measures.
  • * Compassion mixed with fear = lest by contact with them we may be brought within the influence of the deadly contamination that clings to all their surroundings.
  • * The three classes are: (1) those who contend with you (accusative case in oldest manuscripts), whom you should convict; (2) those who are as brands already in the fire, of which hell-fire is the consummation: these you should try to save by snatching them out; (3) those who are objects of compassion, whom accordingly you should compassionate (and help if occasion should offer), but at the same time not let pity degenerate into connivance at their error. Your compassion is to be accompanied “with fear” of being at all defiled by them.

The Shepherd’s Eye

February 27, 2010

Proverbs 15:3
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.

1 Peter 5:1-4 AMP
I WARN and counsel the elders among you (the pastors and spiritual guides of the church) as a fellow elder and as an eyewitness [called to testify] of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a sharer in the glory (the honor and splendor) that is to be revealed (disclosed, unfolded): Tend (nurture, guard, guide, and fold) the flock of God that is [your responsibility], not by coercion or constraint, but willingly; not dishonorably motivated by the advantages and profits [belonging to the office], but eagerly and cheerfully; Not domineering [as arrogant, dictatorial, and overbearing persons] over those in your charge, but being examples (patterns and models of Christian living) to the flock (the congregation). And [then] when the Chief Shepherd is revealed, you will win the conqueror’s crown of glory.

Zechariah 11:4-5, 15-17
Thus says the LORD my God, “Feed the flock for slaughter, whose owners slaughter them and feel no guilt; those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, for I am rich’; and their shepherds do not pity them. … And the LORD said to me, “Next, take for yourself the implements of a foolish shepherd. For indeed I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are cut off, nor seek the young, nor heal those that are broken, nor feed those that still stand. But he will eat the flesh of the fat and tear their hooves in pieces. Woe to the *idol shepherd, who leaves the flock! A sword shall be upon his arm and upon his right eye; his arm shall completely wither, and his right eye shall be totally blinded.

The eye and arm of the idol shepherd recieves judgment because the main activities of a shepherd are to watch over and guide the flock. A shepherd with no arm to guide nor eye to see is no shepherd at all. Idol[0457] in the above verse means something worthless(particularly as an object of worship). Shepherd[07473] comes from a word[07462] which means to pasture, tend, graze, feed.

How appropriate that the sword is the judgement upon the eye of the idol shepherd! It’s the delusion sent by the Lord to those who refused to love the truth.

Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they refused to love the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who refused the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Matthew 6:22-23 NKJV
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good{single}, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Matthew 6:22-23 NLT
Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be!

The Shepherd’s Eye
The Good Shepherd The Idol Shepherd
The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and His ears are open to their cry. -Ps 34:15 Woe to the idol shepherd, who leaves the flock! A sword shall be upon his arm and upon his right eye; his arm shall completely wither, and his right eye shall be totally blinded. -Zech 11:17
For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil. -1 Pe 3:12 And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. … Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.-Rev 13:3, 11-14
The eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. – 2 Chron 16:9 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. -2 Tim 4:3-4
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy. -Ps 33:18 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of you father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. -Jn 8:43-44
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever. -Ps 111:10 Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart; There is no fear of God before his eyes. -Ps 36:1
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. … Because you are precious in My sight and honored, and because I love you … – Isa 43:1,4 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who listens to counsel is wise. -Prov 12:15
He will not let your foot slip— He who watches over you will not slumber … The LORD will keep you from all harm— He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. -Ps 121:3,7-8 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. -Lk 1:51-52
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. -Ps 32:8 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool. But he who walks wisely will be delivered. -Prov 28:26

Hebrews 13:20-21 (NKJV)
May the God of peace … the great Shepherd of the sheep … make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
