Washed by the Water in the Word

February 23, 2020

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. –Matthew 5:8
Worship in spirit and truth
Be washed by the water in the word
Pure hearts see and love fervently …
Love one another fervently from a pure heart. –1Peter 1:22
All who have this hope in Him{Jesus} purify themselves, just as He is pure. –1John 3:3

Word Study
From NetBible Jn 4:23
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

  • worship[4352]proskuneo = to kiss the hand towards one (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand), in token of reverence, bow down-prostrate oneself(or kneel) in homage – worship, adoration
    • Psalm 2:12 … Kiss the Son = in trembling kiss His feet, pay homage in purity
    • The homage is to the Lord of Psalm 2:2 and to the Son of Psalm 2:7 — the Messiah King. Homage, kissing a King also implies submission. Like above: worship[4352]proskuneo this is to pay homage in recognition of royalty, to show submission to a king, to be under the king’s reign – like a dog licking his master’s hand.

From NetBible Eph 5:26
so that He{Jesus} might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word

  • sanctify[37] = make holy
    * purify: free from the guilt of sin
    * purify: internally by renewing of the soul

  • John 17:17Sanctify[37] them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
  • John 17:19And for their sakes I sanctify[37] Myself, that they also may be sanctified[37] by the truth
  • 1John 3:3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He{Jesus} is pure.
    • 1 John 3:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)
3 And everyone who has this hope [confidently placed] in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (holy, undefiled, guiltless).

From NetBible Mt 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

  • pure[2513] = clean, sincere, blameless, innocent
    * purified by fire
    * free from corrupt desire, from sin and guilt
    * free from falsehoods
    * like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit (Jn 15:2)

    • 1Peter 1:22-23 Since you have purified{cleansed} your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren{believers}, love one another fervently with a pure[2513] heart. 23  for you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God.
    • Prayer:
      Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be *sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

      From NetBible Phil 1:10

      • sincere[1506] = found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light, tested as genuine, unspotted
      • *from heile (the sun’s ray) and 2919; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested
        as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.

What a beautiful picture of a sincere pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

    • I am being transformed by a renewed mind!!
Romans 12:1-2 AMP … Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].
  • see[3700] = to look at, to behold
    * to gaze – with wide-open eyes, as at something remarkable

Matthew 5:8 Amplified Bible (AMP)
8 “Blessed [anticipating God’s presence, spiritually mature] are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God.

Psalm 1:1-3 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
1 Blessed (happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.
2 But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.
3 And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not fade or wither; and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].

Colossians 2:6-7 NLT
6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to live in obedience to{walk in} Him.
7 Let your roots grow down into Him and draw up nourishment from Him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all He has done.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 AMPC
7 [Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is.
8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out its roots by the river; and it shall not see and fear when heat comes; but its leaf shall be green. It shall not be anxious and full of care in the year of drought, nor shall it cease yielding fruit.

Washed Eyes

Psalm 36:7-9 AMP
7 How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
The children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
8 They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;
And You allow them to drink from the river of Your delights.
9 For with You is the fountain of life [the fountain of life-giving water];
In Your light we see light.

* NLT … 9 For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.
* MSG … 9 You’re a fountain of cascading light, and you open our eyes to light.
Ephesians 5:26 AMP

John 9:11 AMP
11 He replied, “The Man called Jesus made mud and smeared it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received my sight!”

Word Study
From John 9:7,11 commentary

  • The pool of Siloam, supplied from the Virgin’s fountain (Isaiah 8:6), lay at the south-east corner of Jerusalem in the Kidron Valley. On the opposite side of the valley lies a village Silwan representing the old name. The name is here interpreted as meaning “Sent”.
  • Waters of Shiloh also represent the Messiah, the “Sent”.(Genesis 49:10)
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah – until Shiloh (that is, the Sent of God: the Messiah) come,”
  • The pool of Siloam was bound up with all the religious feelings of the Feast of Tabernacles. A solemn procession went each morning to it, and carried water from it to the Temple. That water had already led to the teaching of the gift of the Spirit to every man who should receive the Messiah (John 7:37), uttered, perhaps, on this very day (John 9:1). There would be attached, then, to the pool of Siloam a sacred significance that would be in itself a help to faith.

From NetBible John 9:1

  • Since there is no break with chap. 8, Jesus is presumably still in Jerusalem, and presumably not still in the temple area. The events of chap. 9 fall somewhere between the feast of Tabernacles (John 7:2) and the feast of the Dedication (John 10:22). … the incident recorded in chap. 9 (along with the ensuing debates with the Pharisees) serves as a real-life illustration of the claim Jesus made in 8:12, I am the light of the world.
  • One other thing which should be pointed out about the miracle recorded in chap. 9 is its messianic significance. In the OT it is God himself who is associated with the giving of sight to the blind (Ex 4:11; Ps 146:8). In a number of passages in (Isa 29:18, 35:5, 42:7) it is considered to be a messianic activity.

Can blind eyes be opened to see clearly.Jn 9:11

I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. –Rev 3:18-19

Lord-Refresh me thru the washing of Ur word-Open my eyes to see deep&marvelous things-Only in Ur light do we see!

John 13:8 NKJV … Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

From NetBible Jn 9:11 & Jn 13:8

  • wash[3538] = Initial acceptance of Christ gives full washing/cleansing(baptism). The foot washing is a partial washing symbolic of washing away daily sin.

1 John 1:5 NASB … This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.

From NetBible 1Jn 1:5

  • 3 Claims: 1 John 6, 8, 10 NASB
    • 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth
    • 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
    • 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
  • 3 Counter Claims: 1 John 7, 9, 2:1 NASB
    • 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin
    • 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    • 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
