Unforgiveness = Healing Block

August 19, 2015

Luke 5:17-26 NASB
17 One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18 And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” 22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” 25 Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 26 They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

The power to heal was present – Jesus was teaching – the Pharisees did not receive. Looking at who did receive healing shows some interesting things. Jesus had “revelation” of the faith of the friends and He must have also had “revelation” of the state of the paralytic – the need for forgiveness of sins – before physical healing takes place. Here the physical healing of the paralytic confirms the authority of Jesus to forgive sins.

This account in Mark shows that Jesus was both preaching and teaching before this healing. What’s the difference between preaching and teaching?

Mark 2:1-3 NKJV
And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. 2 Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. 3 Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men.

What did Jesus preach?

Matthew 4:17 NASB
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Luke 24:47 NASB
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

* Preaching = a salvation message
* Teaching = a specific word from the Lord

Is it a coincidence that this is the message that the paralytic needed to hear before his healing? Jesus had “revelation” that the paralytic’s heart needed forgiveness of his sins. It also implies that at times unforgiveness may be another block to healing.

This shows how important it is to be in step with the Holy Spirit – Jesus ministered healing in many ways depending on the individual being ministered to. Only He has knowledge of what state each heart is in and has need of.

Matthew 6:15 NASB
15 … if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Mark 11:25-26 NASB
Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. 26 [But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”]
