Honey: Taste and SEE

January 19, 2014

1 Samuel 14:27-29But Jonathan had not heard when his father put the people under oath; therefore, he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. 28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food today.’” And the people were weary. 29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See now, how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

What does the honey represent in this passage?

  • What is sweet and brightens the eyes?
    .
Psalm 19:7-10 … The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether. 10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.

Sweeter than Honey

September 16, 2012

Psalm 19:8-10 AMP … The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure and bright, enlightening the eyes. The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even than much fine gold; they are sweeter also than honey and drippings from the honeycomb.

Proverbs 16:24Pleasant-Kind-Gracious words are like a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

From NetBible Prov 16:24

*The metaphor of honey or the honeycomb is used elsewhere in scripture, notably Ps 19:10 [11]. Honey was used in Israel as a symbol of the delightful and healthy products of the land – “a land flowing with milk and honey” (Deut 6:3).

* Two predicates are added to qualify the metaphor: The pleasant words are “sweet” and “healing.” “Soul” includes in it the appetites, physical and spiritual; and so sweet to the “soul” would summarize all the ways pleasant words give pleasure. “Bones” is a metonymy of subject, the boney framework representing the whole person, body and soul. Pleasant words, like honey, will enliven and encourage the whole person. One might recall, in line with the imagery here, how Jonathan’s eyes brightened when he ate from the honeycomb (1 Sam 14:27).

Seek Jesus Christ as if looking for hidden treasure.

His words are sweeter than honey; More desired than much fine gold. -Col2:2-3; Ps19:10,119:103,119:72,119:127

They are sweet to the soul bringing joy to the heart, light to the eyes and healing to the bones.

If you have any word of exhortation or consolation or encouragement for the people, say it! -ACTS 13:15 AMP

Samson’s Riddle

January 16, 2012

Judges 14:14So he[Samson] said to them:

“Out of the eater came something to eat,
And out of the strong came something sweet.”
Now for three days they could not explain the riddle.

The answer:

Judges 14:8 … When he returned later to take her, he turned aside to look at the carcass of the lion; and behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the body of the lion.

Judges 14:17-18Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. Then she explained the riddle to the sons of her people. 18 So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down:

“What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?”

And he said to them:

“If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle!”

—>A honeycomb in the body of a dead lion.

The Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed!
Tho He was slain as a Lamb
He lives!
He speaks.
His words sweeter than honey!

How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! -Ps 119:103

Revelation 5:1-6 … And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.
4 So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it. 5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

6 And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

Honey from the Rock

1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people (a people belonging to God), that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Jeremiah 15:16 NET
As your words came to me I drank them in, and they filled my heart with joy and happiness because I belong to you.

From the NetBible Jere 15:16

*The prophet accepted them {drank them in}, assimilated them, and made them such a part of himself that he spoke with complete assurance what he knew were God’s words.

This is what we as the Lord’s chosen people —
must continue to do!

As His words come, drink them in
He sends forth His word …
He causes His wind to blow –Ps 147:18

He breathes out His breath
The breath of life — the living waters flow!

Breathe in His life, drink in His word
Come into His marvelous light

How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! –Ps 119:103

Pure, rich, fresh, the perfect food, the living word
Sweet golden oil flowing from the flinty crag
Rock Eternal standing firm enduring the winds of time –1 Pe 1:22-25
Honey from the Rock –Deut 32:10-13
Taste and SEE –1 Sam 14:29
Taste and believe, it is done –Jn 4:50,53
Taste and boldly speak proclaiming His praise
For I AM watching over My word to perform it –Jere 1:12
The living, unfailing word of the LORD forever stands!

1 Samuel 14:27-29
But Jonathan had not heard when his father put the people under oath; therefore, he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food today.'” And the people were weary. Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See now, how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey”.

Deuteronomy 32:10-13
In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste.
He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions.
The LORD alone led him; no foreign god was with him.
He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag …

Ezekiel 3:10-11
And he said to me, “Son of man, listen carefully and take to heart all the words I speak to you. Go now to your countrymen in exile and speak to them. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says,’ whether they listen or fail to listen.”

1 Peter 1:22-25
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For,
“All men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of the Lord stands forever.
