As the Deer Thirsts

January 7, 2015

Psalm 42:1-2 NIV
1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. …

As The Deer Thirsts For The Water
by Dennis Jernigan

As the deer
Thirsts for the water, Lord
So my soul
Longs after You
My soul Thirsts for the Living God
Yes, my soul
Longs after You

And I pour out my soul
Deep within me
Deep within me I pour out my soul
Draw me deeper, Lord
Deeper, Lord in You
Draw me deeper, Lord
Deeper, Lord in You

And I pour out my soul into Your presence
Come and lift up my soul
Come and lift up my soul

Draw me deeper, Lord
Deeper, Lord in You
Draw me deeper, Lord
Deeper, Lord in You

Psalm 143:6,8 NASB
6 I stretch out my hands to You;
My soul longs for You, as a parched land. Selah. …
… 8 Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning;
For I trust in You;
Teach me the way in which I should walk;
For to You I lift up my soul.

From NetBible Ps 143:6,8

  • “my soul thirsts for you, as a parched land does for water/rain”
  • *I lift up my soul/life = I desire, long for you

Psalm 62:8 AMP
8 Trust in, lean on, rely on, and have confidence in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is a refuge for us (a fortress and a high tower). Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

Pure in Heart – Lift Up Your Heads!

February 12, 2014

Psalm 24:3-4,7 NKJV … Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy [dwelling]place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. … Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.

Matthew 5:8 NKJV … Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Who may lift up their heads and ascend into the hill of the Lord? Into His dwelling place/presence?
==> Those with clean hands and a pure heart

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • *clean hands – pure heart ==>The “hands” allude to one’s actions, the “heart” to one’s thought life and motives.
  • pure[01249] = clear, sincere
    From[01305] = to purify, select, polish, choose, purge, cleanse or make bright, test or prove, examine

From NetBible Mt 5:8

  • pure[2513] = clean, purified by fire, sincere, blameless, innocent, free from falsehoods
    * like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit
  • see[3700] = to behold, to allow oneself to be seen

==> Those who have not lifted up their souls to an idol

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • lift up[05375] = rise up, look up
  • *lift up his soul to an idol ==> here means to “long for” or “desire strongly.”
    ==>the opposite of Ps 143:8 -lift up his soul to the Lord
    Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

The words above give a beautiful picture of what a pure heart is. A heart that so longs for the Lord’s presence that it willingly submits to the Lord’s purifying fire or pruning. A heart that longs to hear and do the Lord’s will alone. The pictures of a pure heart above are much like the picture painted below in Paul’s prayer(Phil 1:9-11).

The strong’s word – heilikrines [1506] for sincere in his prayer is very interesting. It means pure, sincere, unsullied. Looking more closely at this word, we see it is actually a compound word. The first part comes from heile (the sun’s ray), the second from krino (to judge). So the two parts together mean to be found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light!

What a beautiful picture of a sincere/pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

From NetBbible Phil 1:10

  • *sincere – heilikrines[1506] = pure, unsullied
    *found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light
    *from heile (the sun’s ray) and [2919]; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.
Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV … And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God..Psalm 139:23-24    Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Jesus My Soul Longs For You!

January 12, 2014

Jesus I long for You
As the deer pants for streams of water
So my soul longs for You
My soul longs for You, the Living God.

Living water to my soul, only You can satisfy
Draw me, draw me away in Your steadfast love
My lips will brim praises like fountains
-Ps87:7
And I will follow hard after You.

From NetBible Ps 42:1-2
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When can I come and appear before God?

  • soul pants{thirsts}[06165] = longs for
  • thirsts[06770] = suffer thirst, parching as if in the desert

.
Form NetBible Psalm 84:2
My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

  • soul longs[03700] = desperately wants, yearns, pines after
  • faints[03615] = desperately wants, yearns

.
From NetBible Ps 63:1
O God, You are my God; Earnestly I seek You; My soul thirsts[06770] for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

  • earnestly[07836] = look early or diligently for
  • yearns[03642] = pines after, faints with longing.

.

From NetBible Ps 63:3-4,8
Because experiencing Your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will glorify You. For this reason, I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. … My soul follows hard after You; Your right hand upholds me.

  • The psalmist does not speak here of divine loyal love in some abstract sense, but of loyal love revealed and experienced.
  • my lips glorify[07623] = brim praises like fountains
  • follow hard[01692] = a determination to cling, cleave, be joined, to run after with determination to overtake and capture

.
From NetBible Song 1:4
Draw me after you, let us make haste, let us run together! Let the king bring me into his chambers. We rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. How right they are to adore you!

  • Draw[04900] = to lead
    *The verb מָשַׁךְ (mashakh, “draw”) is a figurative expression (hypocatastasis) which draws an implied comparison between the physical acting of leading a person with the romantic action of leading a person in love. Elsewhere it is used figuratively of a master gently leading an animal with leather cords (Hos 11:4) and of a military victor leading his captives (Jer 31:3). The point of comparison might be that the woman wants to be the willing captive of the love of her beloved, that is, a willing prisoner of his love.
  • run after[07323] = to eagerly hurry, chase
  • rejoice[01523] = spin, circle around(dance, leap) in joy
  • be glad[08055] = be merry, to brighten up, shine in joy
  • everlasting love[0160] = God’s love to His people
  • lovingkindness[02617] = unfailing love, goodness, mercy, kindness, faithfulness

Thirsty – Lift Up Your Hands!

July 8, 2012

I spread out my hands to You; My soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Selah -Ps 143:6 NKJV

… I thirst for You as parched land thirsts for rain -Ps 143:6 NLT …

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God{to drink in His presence}? -Ps 42:1-2

O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; my whole body longs for You in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld Your power and Your glory. Because experiencing Your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise You. For this reason I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.-Ps 63:1-4

The lifting up of your hands to the Lord;

  • An indication of of wholehearted thirst after the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • A reflection of the lifting up of your heart and soul to be touched and filled. Jesus Christ alone, the fountain of living water, satisfies.

    Let each morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. -Ps 143:8

    How precious is Your unfailing love, O God! All people find shelter in the shadow of Your wings. They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house; And You give them drink from the river of Your delights. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light. -Ps 36:7-9

The lifting up of your hands to the Lord;

  • A banner of praise to bless and be blessed by the Lord.

    He blesses you; therefore, be zealous to bless him -Spurgeon

… I bless You every time I take a breath; My arms wave like banners of praise to You. -Ps 63:4 MSG

Behold, bless{affectionately and gratefully praise} the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, you who serve as night watchmen in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the LORD.

Lift Up Hearts and Hands

February 21, 2010

Lamentations 3:40-41 AMP
Let us test and examine our ways, and let us return to the Lord! Let us lift up our hearts and our hands [and then with them mount up in prayer] to God in heaven.

1 Timothy 2:8
I desire therefore that in every place men should pray, without anger or quarreling or resentment or doubt [in their minds], lifting up holy hands.

Who shall go up into the mountain of the Lord? Or who shall stand in His Holy Place?

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted himself up to falsehood or to what is false, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. -Ps 24:3-5

Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. -Ps 141:2

I spread out my hands to You;
My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.
Selah
Answer me speedily, O LORD;
My spirit fails!
Do not hide Your face from me,
Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.
Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You. -Ps 143:6-8

Lift up your hands in holiness and to the sanctuary and bless the Lord [affectionately and gratefully praise Him]! -Ps 134:2
