Pure in Heart – Lift Up Your Heads!

February 12, 2014

Psalm 24:3-4,7 NKJV … Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy [dwelling]place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. … Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.

Matthew 5:8 NKJV … Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.

Who may lift up their heads and ascend into the hill of the Lord? Into His dwelling place/presence?
==> Those with clean hands and a pure heart

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • *clean hands – pure heart ==>The “hands” allude to one’s actions, the “heart” to one’s thought life and motives.
  • pure[01249] = clear, sincere
From[01305] = to purify, select, polish, choose, purge, cleanse or make bright, test or prove, examine

From NetBible Mt 5:8

  • pure[2513] = clean, purified by fire, sincere, blameless, innocent, free from falsehoods
    * like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit
  • see[3700] = to behold, to allow oneself to be seen

==> Those who have not lifted up their souls to an idol

From NetBible Ps 24:4

  • lift up[05375] = rise up, look up
  • *lift up his soul to an idol ==> here means to “long for” or “desire strongly.”
==>the opposite of Ps 143:8 -lift up his soul to the Lord
Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.

The words above give a beautiful picture of what a pure heart is. A heart that so longs for the Lord’s presence that it willingly submits to the Lord’s purifying fire or pruning. A heart that longs to hear and do the Lord’s will alone. The pictures of a pure heart above are much like the picture painted below in Paul’s prayer(Phil 1:9-11).

The strong’s word – heilikrines [1506] for sincere in his prayer is very interesting. It means pure, sincere, unsullied. Looking more closely at this word, we see it is actually a compound word. The first part comes from heile (the sun’s ray), the second from krino (to judge). So the two parts together mean to be found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light!

What a beautiful picture of a sincere/pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

From NetBbible Phil 1:10

  • *sincere – heilikrines[1506] = pure, unsullied
*found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light
*from heile (the sun’s ray) and [2919]; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.
Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV … And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God..Psalm 139:23-24    Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Lift up your eyes and see
The King of kings coming in glory
Rejoice greatly, stand up and shout in triumph
O daughter of Zion.

O daughter of Zion and see
The coming King of glory
He is righteous and victorious
Endowed with salvation.
-Zec 9:9

Behold! Your King is coming to you!

Forever and ever{from everlasting to everlasting}!
“Blessed be Your glorious name, which is exalted above
ALL blessing and praise!”
-Neh 9:5

You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance{garlands of hosannas}. Selah. -Ps 32:7

Word Study

From NetBible Jn 12:13

  • hosanna[5614] =
From [03467] = to be liberated, saved, delivered, victorious
and [04994] = we pray now please
  • The expression ῾Ωσαννά (Jwsanna, literally in Hebrew, “O Lord, save”) in the quotation from Ps 118:25-26 was probably by this time a familiar liturgical expression of praise, on the order of “Hail to the king,” although both the underlying Aramaic and Hebrew expressions meant “O Lord, save us.” As in Mark 11:9 the introductory ὡσαννά is followed by the words of Ps 118:25, εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου (euloghmeno” Jo ercomeno” en onomati kuriou), although in the Fourth Gospel the author adds for good measure καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ ᾿Ισραήλ (kai Jo basileu” tou Israhl). In words familiar to every Jew, the author is indicating that at this point every messianic expectation is now at the point of realization. It is clear from the words of the psalm shouted by the crowd that Jesus is being proclaimed as messianic king. See E. Lohse, TDNT9:682-84.* Hosannais an Aramaic expression that literally means, “help, I pray,” or “save, I pray.” By Jesus’ time it had become a strictly liturgical formula of praise, however, and was used as an exclamation of praise to God.* A quotation from Ps 118:25-26.

From NetBible Lk 21:28

  • look up[352] = to raise or lift one’s self{body/soul} up
  • redemption[629] = deliverance, liberation procured by the payment of a ransom

From NetBible Ps 24:7

  • lift up[05375] = rise up, look up
  • gates[08179] = entrances, doors, openings, court of tabernacle
  • glory[03519] = honor, splendor, majesty, weighty

From NetBible Isa 60:18
… you will call your walls salvation, and your gates praise.

    • walls[02346] = fortified walls, walls of protection
    • salvation[03444] = deliverance, victory
    • gates[08179] = entrances, doors, openings, court of tabernacle
    • praise[08416] = song or hymn of adoration, thanksgiving

From NetBible Zec 9:9

  • Rejoice[01523] = joyful, glad, to spin round (under the influence of any violent emotion)
  • shout[07321] = loud shout for joy in triumph
  • righteous[06662] = just, lawful
  • salvation[03467] = to be liberated, saved, delivered, victorious
  • The NT understands this verse to be a prophecy of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, and properly so (cf. Matt 21:5; John 12:15), but reference to the universal rule of the king in v. 10 reveals that this is a “split prophecy,” that is, it has a two-stage fulfillment. Verse 9 was fulfilled in Jesus’ earthly ministry but v. 10 awaits a millennial consummation (cf. Rev 19:11-16).

From NetBible Neh 9:5

  • Stand up[06965] = arise, rise up, stir up
  • bless[01288] = kneel, praise, salute
  • glorious[03519] = honor, splendor, majesty, weighty
  • exalted[07311] = set on high, raised lifted up
  • praise[08416] = song or hymn of adoration, thanksgiving

From NetBible Ps 32:7

  • hiding place[05643] = sheltered, covered, protected, secret place
  • preserve[05341] = to watch, guard, keep
  • surround[05437] = encompass, enclose, envelop
  • deliverance[06405] = escape
songs of deliverance = songs of celebration for salvation BBE

Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah -Ps 24:7-10

The voice of rejoicing and salvation Is in the tent{tabernacles} of the righteous; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly{has done mighty things!}. The right hand of the LORD is exalted{lifted up}; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly{mighty things, conquers}. … Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, And I will praise the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD, Through which the righteous shall enter. I will praise{give thanks, confess the name of God} You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation. -Ps 118:15-16, 19-21
