Jesus Brings the Everlasting Kingdom

February 20, 2019

Matthew 12:22-30 New King James Version (NKJV)
A House Divided Cannot Stand
22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”
24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

Jesus is the “son of David” the Messiah

  • What does the title “son of David” mean?
    • Jesus in the royal{legal} bloodline of Joseph makes Him:

From NetBible Mt 12:22

  • demon-possessed[1139] = to be under the power of a demon.
=>In the NT, these are persons, afflicted with especially severe
diseases, either bodily or mentally, (such as paralysis, blindness,
deafness, loss of speech, epilepsy, melancholy, insanity, etc.)
whose bodies in the opinion of the Jews demons had entered, and so
held possession of them as not only to afflict them with ills, but
    also to dethrone the reason and take its place themselves;
accordingly the possessed were wont to express the mind and
consciousness of the demons dwelling in them; and their cure was
thought to require the expulsion of the demon.

.
From NetBible Mt 12:24

  • Beelzebub[954] = “lord of the house”
=> a name of Satan, the prince of evil spirits
*Hebrew for [01176] = “lord of the fly”
=> a Philistine deity worshipped at Ekron

Jesus’ Birth in Bethlehem
1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Psalm 2: The Son of David – The Son of God

March 7, 2016

Psalm 2:6-9 AMPC … Yet have I anointed (installed and placed) My King [firmly] on My holy hill of Zion.I will declare the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, You are My Son; this day [I declare] I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations as Your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth as Your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like potters’ ware.

From NetBible Ps 2:7

  • *‘You are my son!’ The Davidic king was viewed as God’s “son” (see 2 Sam 7:14; Ps 89:26-27(1st born son)). The idiom reflects ancient Near Eastern adoption language associated with covenants of grant, by which a lord would reward a faithful subject by elevating him to special status, referred to as “sonship.” Like a son, the faithful subject received an “inheritance,” viewed as an unconditional, eternal gift. Such gifts usually took the form of land and/or an enduring dynasty.

This points to prophecy about the House of David. Both Joseph and Mary were in the bloodline of David. Jesus in the royal bloodline of Joseph makes Him: The Messiah, the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. Jesus in the bloodline of Mary makes Him the promised seed(Gen 3:15), the Son of God. Psalm 2 is about Jesus as both the Son of David and the Son of God.

Psalm 2:7 is quoted in Hebrews 1:5 again showing the prophecy and bloodlines of Jesus as both the Son of David and the Son of God.

Hebrews 1:5-6 AMPC … For to which of the angels did [God] ever say, You are My Son, today I have begotten You [established You in an official Sonship relation, with kingly dignity]? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He will be to Me a Son? 6 Moreover, when He brings the firstborn Son again into the habitable world, He says, Let all the angels of God worship Him.

Psalm 2:7 quoted in Acts 13 shows that it was at the resurrection of Jesus that He was installed as the Davidic King. This resurrection did not initiate Jesus into His diety as some have supposed(Kenosis). It was about Jesus assuming His role as the human heir to the throne of David.

Acts 13:29-39 AMPC … And when they had finished and fulfilled everything that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
30 But God raised Him from the dead.
31 And for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, and they are His witnesses to the people.
32 So now we are bringing you the good news (Gospel) that what God promised to our forefathers,
33 This He has completely fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, You are My Son; today I have begotten You [caused You to arise, to be born; formally shown You to be the Messiah by the resurrection].
34 And as to His having raised Him from among the dead, now no more to return to [undergo] putrefaction and dissolution [of the grave], He spoke in this way, I will fulfill and give to you the holy and sure mercy and blessings [that were promised and assured] to David.
35 For this reason He says also in another psalm, You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption [to undergo putrefaction and dissolution of the grave].
36 For David, after he had served God’s will and purpose and counsel in his own generation, fell asleep [in death] and was buried among his forefathers, and he did see corruption and undergo putrefaction and dissolution [of the grave].
37 But He Whom God raised up [to life] saw no corruption [did not experience putrefaction and dissolution of the grave].
38 So let it be clearly known and understood by you, brethren, that through this Man forgiveness and removal of sins is now proclaimed to you;
39 And that through Him everyone who believes [who acknowledges Jesus as his Savior and devotes himself to Him] is absolved (cleared and freed) from every charge from which he could not be justified and freed by the Law of Moses and given right standing with God.

***

From NetBible Acts 13:33
that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.’

  • * This promise refers to the promise of a Savior through the seed (descendants) of David that is proclaimed as fulfilled (Rom 1:1-7).
  • * You are my Son. The key to how the quotation is used is the naming of Jesus as “Son” to the Father. The language is that of kingship, as Ps 2 indicates. Here is the promise about what the ultimate Davidic heir would be.

.
Mark 12:35-37 NKJV
Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?
35 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36 For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
37 Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
And the common people heard Him gladly.

From NetBible Mark 12:35-37

  • * It was a common belief in Judaism that Messiah would be David’s son in that he would come from the lineage of David. On this point the Pharisees agreed and were correct. But their understanding was nonetheless incomplete, for Messiah is also David’s Lord. With this statement Jesus was affirming that, as the Messiah, he is both God and man.
  • * The Lord said to my Lord. With David being the speaker, this indicates his respect for his descendant (referred to as my Lord). Jesus was arguing, as the ancient exposition assumed, that the passage is about the Lord’s anointed. The passage looks at an enthronement of this figure and a declaration of honor for him as he takes his place at the side of God. In Jerusalem, the king’s palace was located to the right of the temple to indicate this kind of relationship. Jesus was pressing the language here to get his opponents to reflect on how great Messiah is.(greatness has to do with position)

Prophecy: The Promised Seed(Line of Mary)

December 30, 2014
The Line of David through his son Nathan to Joseph(Mary) in Luke 3 from my post The House of David is the fulfillment of prophecy. Notice this line goes all the way back to Adam and Eve.

The Promised Seed
Genesis 3:15 NASB
15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.

  • This promise is addressed to the serpent as judgement: v14
  • This promise has hope for mankind(the seed)
  • This is also a prophecy of hostility and struggle between the serpent’s seed and the woman’s seed
  • The woman’s seed anticipates the virgin birth

Prophecy: Royal Line Through David’s Son Solomon

December 27, 2014
The Line of David through the kings to Joseph in Matthew 1 from my last post The House of David is the fulfillment of prophecy. As previously noted this is the Legal bloodline of Jesus. Jesus is not of the seed of Joseph; yet legally He is of the Royal Bloodline.  This is how God got around the curse on the seed of Jechoniah (also known as Coniah or Jehoiachin) as recorded in Jeremiah 22:30. This line was royal line of David, so if the Messiah was to qualify for the throne of David (Lk 1:31-33), he had to be of the legal line of David, yet not of his seed..Only the Lord could do this!

.

This line also connects Jesus with both the Jews and Gentiles; As it mentions the gentile mothers.

.

This line also connects Jesus to the seed of Abraham.

.
Genesis 22:18-19 NASB
18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.

Galatians 3:16 NASB
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

***

Genesis 49:10 NASB
10 “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes,
And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

2 Samuel 7:12-17 NASB
12 When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, 15 but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”’” 17 In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

1 Chronicles 28:4-5 NASB
4 Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever. For He has chosen Judah to be a leader; and in the house of Judah, my father’s house, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel. 5 Of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons), He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.

Psalm 132:11 NASB
11 The Lord has sworn to David
A truth from which He will not turn back: “Of the fruit of your body I will set upon your throne.

Luke 1:26-33 NASB
Jesus’ Birth Foretold
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

Isaiah 9:6-7 NASB
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

The House of David

December 24, 2014
Were both Joseph and Mary in the House{line} of David?

Matthew 1 traces the legal line of Jesus through the kings to Joseph

Matthew 1:6, 16 NASB
6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. …
… 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.

From NetBible Mt 1:16

  • The word “of whom” Jesus was born is feminine in Greek, indicating (naturally enough) that Jesus was born of Mary, not Joseph. The Greek also says “Jacob begat Joseph” – making it 100% clear that Joseph’s father’s name was Jacob.

Luke 3 traces the physical bloodline of Jesus to Mary

Luke 3:23 NASB
23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Heli,

Joseph could not have 2 fathers that’s why this says “supposed” making it clear he was not “begat” from Heli. Legally Joseph here is representing Mary – whose father then must be Heli …

Another clue that Luke 3 is the bloodline through Mary is Zerubbabel – the last person who stands in both bloodlines.

*** God used these two lines of ancestry for Jesus because He placed a curse on the seed of Jechoniah (also known as Coniah or Jehoiachin) as recorded in Jeremiah 22:30. That line was royal line of David, so if the Messiah was to qualify for the throne of David (Lk 1:31-33), he had to be of the legal line of David, yet not of his seed.
