The Wind and Waves Obey?!

December 4, 2018

Who then is this, that even the wind
And the sea{
waves} obey Him?!
Mk 4:35-41;Mt 8:18-27;Lk 8:22-26

From NetBible Mk 4:39;Mt 8:26;Lk 8:24
Then He{Jesus} arose{from sleep} and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. –Mk 4:39

.
What statement was Jesus making?

From NetBible Ps 104:3; 135:7; 107:23-30
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distresses. 29 He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. –Ps 107:28-29

  • LORD[03068] = Jehovah = “the existing One”, the proper name of the one true God

.
Jesus is fully God; Part of the Trinity!

For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. –1Jn 5:7

.
Jesus needing deep sleep here demonstrates
He is also fully human!

Then He{Jesus} arose{from sleep} and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. –Mk 4:39
Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. –Mt 8:24
As they sailed, He fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. –Lk 8:23

.
WOW! One minute Jesus’ glory veiled in sleeping flesh
The next His glory- the glory of the Father revealed calming the storm!
.
John 1:1,14In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. …
… 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

From NetBible Jn 1:14

  • * The Greek word translated took up residence (σκηνόω, skhnow) alludes to the OT tabernacle, where the Shekinah, the visible glory of God’s presence, resided. The author is suggesting that this glory can now be seen in Jesus (note the following verse). The verb used here may imply that the Shekinah glory that once was found in the tabernacle has taken up residence in the person of Jesus. Cf. also John 2:19-21. The Word became flesh. This verse constitutes the most concise statement of the incarnation in the New Testament. John 1:1 makes it clear that the Logos was fully God, but 1:14 makes it clear that he was also fully human. A Docetic interpretation is completely ruled out. Here for the first time the Logos of 1:1 is identified as Jesus of Nazareth – the two are one and the same. Thus this is the last time the word logos is used in the Fourth Gospel to refer to the second person of the Trinity. From here on it is Jesus of Nazareth who is the focus of John’s Gospel.

.

From NetBible Jn 17:5
Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

  • * this verse looks back to the assertion in Jn 1:1 that the Word (the Λόγος [Logos], who became Jesus of Nazareth in Jn 1:14) was with God (πρὸς τὸν θεόν, pro” ton qeon). Whatever else may be said, the statement in 17:5 strongly asserts the preexistence of Jesus Christ.
  • * It is important to note that although Jesus prayed for a return to the glory he had at the Father’s side before the world was created, he was not praying for a “de-incarnation.” His humanity which he took on at the incarnation (Jn 1:14) remains, though now glorified.

Jesus remains god-man as mediator(1Tim 2:5)

Wind and Waves Still Obey

November 16, 2016

Mark 4:35-41 NKJV
Wind and Wave Obey Jesus
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Remember in the midst of the storm
The wind and waves still obey
Jesus the One and Only  –
Jn 1:14
Who speaks: “Peace Be Still” –
Mk 4:39
What a blessing is the great calm, the stillness –Ps 107:30
Jesus – the same yesterday, today and forever –
He 13:8
Still in control!

The Wind and Waves Still Know His Name

April 6, 2016

Mark 4:39 NKJV … Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

Mark 4:39 AMPC … And He[Jesus] arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now! Be still (muzzled)! And the wind ceased (sank to rest as if exhausted by its beating) and there was [immediately] a great calm (a perfect peacefulness).

Psalm 107:29-31 AMPC … He hushes the storm to a calm and to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea are still. 30 Then the men are glad because of the calm, and He brings them to their desired haven. 31 Oh, that men would praise [and confess to] the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!

In the midst of the storm
The sea may roar
The waves may feel like they are kicking you under
Hold ON!
Lift your eyes above the waves
Trust in Jesus
The wind and waves still know His name
What a blessing is the stillness –Ps 107:30
The perfect peace –Is 26:3
Of being held and led through the storm.

Trust in Jesus
He still speaks
“Peace! Be Still!

Isaiah 26:3-4 AMPC … You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. 4 So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].

Sometimes the Lord rides out the storm with us and other times He calms the restless sea around us. Most of all, He calms the storm inside us in our deepest inner soul. –Lloyd John Ogilvie

Safe Harbor Blessing

July 17, 2014

Psalm 107:25-31 NLT    He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits’ end. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; He delivered them from their troubles. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men!

But take heart
Be of good cheer
Be of good courage.

I AM leaving you with a gift

The peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives
So don’t be afraid
Don’t let your hearts be troubled
I have overcome the world!

Know I AM your peace!
Peace! Be still!
Know I AM God.
-Eph 2:14;Mk 4:39;Ps 46:10

John 16:33I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Peace Amid the Storm

Safe Harbor

February 13, 2011

Psalm 107:25-30 He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. When storms rage and strength and courage seem to melt away
Remember the One and Only who the wind and waves obey

He speaks! “Peace! Be Still!”Mk 4:39

A beacon of truth showing the way Jn 8:12
Rock of peace – Rock of refuge
A safe harbor to which you may continually come.

Psalm 71:3 Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; the strong place of my salvation; for You are my Rock, and my fortress(safe place).

Isaiah 26:3-4 You will keep in perfect peace, him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.

Proverbs 29:25 NIV Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

Proverbs 29:25 BBE The fear of man is a cause of danger: but whoever puts his faith in the Lord will have a safe place on high.

Proverbs 29:25 NLT Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but to trust the LORD means safety.

Trust in the Lord means you’ll be kept in perfect peace while being led to a safe place – safe harbor. What a blessing!

Lord, thank that You can calm any storm, both those around us and those within. Thank You that as we trust You we’ll be kept in perfect peace and led to a safe place; a safe harbor in You.

The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Saviour! -Ps 18:46
