Married to the ‘High Tower’

May 9, 2009

Is the word of God being compromised for the sake of unity? Or some other noble ideal? Is the ‘whole’ tolerating the compromise of  ’some’ to preserve ‘peace’?

Unity(or any other noble ideal) at the expense of the truth of the word is false!

They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ”Peace, peace,” they say, when there is no peace. –Jer 8:11

Repent! Lest the One who wields the sharp two-edged sword comes quickly to fight against you.

I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD{to those who say peace, peace}. There will be no grapes on the vine. There will be no figs on the tree, and their leaves will wither. What I have given them will be taken from them. –Jer 8:13

The pride of your heart has deceived you, you dweller in the refuges of the rock [Petra, Edom’s capital], whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, Who can bring me down to the ground? -Ob 1:3

Revelation 2:17     He who is able to hear, let him listen to and heed what the Spirit says to the assemblies (churches). To him who overcomes (conquers), I will give to eat of the manna that is hidden, and I will give him a white stone with a new name engraved on the stone, which no one knows or understands except he who receives it.

Revelation 2:12-16      Then to the angel (messenger) of the assembly (church) in *Pergamum write: These are the words of Him Who has and wields the sharp two-edged sword:

I know where you live–a place where Satan sits enthroned. [Yet] you are clinging to and holding fast My name, and you did not deny My faith, even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed (martyred) in your midst–where Satan dwells. Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: you have some people there who are clinging to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to set a trap and a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, [to entice them] to eat food that had been sacrificed to idols and to practice lewdness [giving themselves up to sexual vice]. You also have some who in a similar way are clinging to the teaching of the Nicolaitans [those corrupters of the people] which thing I hate. Repent [then]! Or else I will come to you quickly and fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

“Pergamum” – this church was married to Christ. However, in spite of their union, they were tolerating compromise in some of their members.

The name Pergamos has a dual meaning, having been the combination of two Greek words, *Purgos, and *Gamos. Although as some may know it means ‘city’, or ‘high tower’ it also means ‘married’, or ‘united by marriage’. The literal translation of Pergamos therefore, is ‘married to the high tower’.

At first glance ‘married to the high tower’ sounds good and some may even think that this refers to being married to Christ. However, look closely at what is held against this church – not that fact that the whole held to the false teachings of Balaam or the Nicolaitans but that ‘some’ who did were tolerated.

By tolerating these false teachings and the people who held them, the word of truth was compromised. It was probably compromised to avoid, conflict, to seemingly preserve unity and peace. This church probably thought they were doing what was wise. As a result of this compromise Satan was given a place or seat in the midst of this church. I believe this represents the ‘high tower’ that this church was married to — the same high tower in the following scripture.

Obadiah 1:3    The pride of your heart has deceived you, you dweller in the refuges of the rock [Petra, Edom’s capital], whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, Who can bring me down to the ground?
