I Will Lift Up My Eyes

July 17, 2013

I will lift up my eyes
To my help and shield
To the One to whom my spirit yields
In the Lord I put all my hope and trust.

I will lift up my eyes
To the Maker of heaven and earth
Ever watching, ever guarding
He never sleeps
He alone has the power to keep my stumbling feet. -1Sam2:9

As I lift up my eyes
To the One who guards my ways
I will lift up my hands
To Him I will give all my praise
He is my Rock, my strength,
my impenetrable shield and -Ps18:2,62:7,73:26,144:1
my joyful song! -Ex15:2;Is12;2

Psalm 121 AMP
1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills [around Jerusalem, to sacred Mount Zion and Mount Moriah]—From whence shall my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to slip or to be moved; He Who keeps{watch with care} you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps{guards} Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper{protector}; the Lord is your shade on your right hand [the side not carrying a shield].
6 The sun shall not smite you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep{preserve} you from all evil; He will keep{preserve} your life.
8 The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Psalm 28 AMP
1 Unto You do I cry, O Lord my Rock, be not deaf and silent to me, lest, if You be silent to me, I become like those going down to the pit [the grave].
2 Hear the voice of my supplication as I cry to You for help, as I lift up my hands toward Your innermost sanctuary (the Holy of Holies).
3 Drag me not away with the wicked, with the workers of iniquity, who speak peace with their neighbors, but malice and mischief are in their hearts.
4 Repay them according to their work and according to the wickedness of their doings; repay them according to the work of their hands; render to them what they deserve.
5 Because they regard not the works of the Lord nor the operations of His hands, He will break them down and not rebuild them.
6 Blessed be the Lord, because He has heard the voice of my supplications.
7 The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him.
8 The Lord is their [unyielding] Strength, and He is the Stronghold of salvation to [me] His anointed.
9 Save Your people and bless Your heritage; nourish and shepherd them and carry them forever.

Psalm 33:20-22 AMP
20 Our inner selves{souls} wait [earnestly] for the Lord; He is our Help and our Shield.
21 For in Him does our heart rejoice, because we have trusted (relied on and been confident) in His holy name.
22 Let Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, be upon us, in proportion to our waiting and hoping for You.

He Never Sleeps

Acts 16:31 AMP … And they answered, Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ [give yourself up to Him, take yourself out of your own keeping and entrust yourself into His keeping] and you will be saved, [and this applies both to] you and your household as well.

Surrender ALL to the Lord Jesus Christ
Entrust yourself and your plans into His keeping
He is ABLE!

2 Timothy 1:12 AMP … And this is why I am suffering as I do. Still I am not ashamed, for I know (perceive, have knowledge of, and am acquainted with) Him Whom I have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on), and I am [positively] persuaded that He is able to guard and keep that which has been entrusted to me and which I have committed [to Him] until that day.

The Lord is your keeper
He is ABLE to keep and guard ALL committed/entrusted to Him
He who watches over you-
He never sleeps!

… your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life! Israel’s
Guardian will never doze or sleep.

… right at your side to protect you—
Shielding you from sunstroke,
sheltering you from moonstroke.

I Lift My Eyes Up
Brian Doerksen (taken from Psalm 121)

I lift my eyes up to the mountains
Where does my help come from
My help comes from You
Maker of heaven, Creator of the earth
I lift my eyes up to the mountains
Where does my help come from
My help comes from You
Maker of heaven, Creator of the earth

Oh how I need You Lord
You are my only hope
You’re my only prayer
So I will wait for You
To come and rescue me
Come and give me life

Psalm 121:1-2    I lift up my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Why does the psalmist say I lift up my eyes to the “hills” instead of the “Lord”? From the Netbible hills [02022], the majesty, height and power of the mountains reaching up to the heavens above the clouds led people to associate these hills or mountains with gods. So looking to the hills or mountains is another way to say look to the power and majesty of the gods — but doesn’t really specify which God? The amplified version sheds more light on this.

Psalm 121:1 AMP    I WILL lift up my eyes to the hills [around Jerusalem, to sacred Mount Zion and Mount Moriah]–From whence shall my help come?

The psalmist was saying I lift up my eyes to the hills, meaning the specific hills of Mount Zion and Moriah. These are not just any hills that the psalmist is looking up to, these hills are closely associated with the Lord Most High, the Maker of heaven and earth! Zion is the Lord’s chosen dwelling place forever, the place where He is enthroned.

Psalm 132:13-14   For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place: “This is My resting place forever; Here I will dwell, for I have desired it”.

Psalm 2:6   I have installed My King On My holy hill of Zion.

Psalm 9:11   Sing praises to the LORD, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.

Mount Moriah is where Abraham offered up Isaac, his only true beloved son, as a sacrifice to the Lord(Gen 22:1-19). Here the Lord himself provides the lamb for sacrifice. This points to the sacrifice of Jesus as the Lamb of God(Jn 1:29,36), God’s only beloved Son(Jn 3:16; Mt 3:17, 17:5).

Wow! The Psalmist by saying I lift up my eyes to the hills{ Mount Zion and Mount Moriah} is actually saying to focus on the Lord’s dwelling place, majesty and  presence and to remember Jesus the Lamb of God, His blood sacrifice. It’s only by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus,  that we can come into the presence of a Holy God and know where our help comes from – the Maker of heaven and earth, the Sovereign Lord.

Psalm 123:1   To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens!
