Psalm 2: The Son of David – The Son of God

March 7, 2016

Psalm 2:6-9 AMPC … Yet have I anointed (installed and placed) My King [firmly] on My holy hill of Zion.I will declare the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, You are My Son; this day [I declare] I have begotten You.
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations as Your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth as Your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them in pieces like potters’ ware.

From NetBible Ps 2:7

  • *‘You are my son!’ The Davidic king was viewed as God’s “son” (see 2 Sam 7:14; Ps 89:26-27(1st born son)). The idiom reflects ancient Near Eastern adoption language associated with covenants of grant, by which a lord would reward a faithful subject by elevating him to special status, referred to as “sonship.” Like a son, the faithful subject received an “inheritance,” viewed as an unconditional, eternal gift. Such gifts usually took the form of land and/or an enduring dynasty.

This points to prophecy about the House of David. Both Joseph and Mary were in the bloodline of David. Jesus in the royal bloodline of Joseph makes Him: The Messiah, the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. Jesus in the bloodline of Mary makes Him the promised seed(Gen 3:15), the Son of God. Psalm 2 is about Jesus as both the Son of David and the Son of God.

Psalm 2:7 is quoted in Hebrews 1:5 again showing the prophecy and bloodlines of Jesus as both the Son of David and the Son of God.

Hebrews 1:5-6 AMPC … For to which of the angels did [God] ever say, You are My Son, today I have begotten You [established You in an official Sonship relation, with kingly dignity]? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He will be to Me a Son? 6 Moreover, when He brings the firstborn Son again into the habitable world, He says, Let all the angels of God worship Him.

Psalm 2:7 quoted in Acts 13 shows that it was at the resurrection of Jesus that He was installed as the Davidic King. This resurrection did not initiate Jesus into His diety as some have supposed(Kenosis). It was about Jesus assuming His role as the human heir to the throne of David.

Acts 13:29-39 AMPC … And when they had finished and fulfilled everything that was written about Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb.
30 But God raised Him from the dead.
31 And for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, and they are His witnesses to the people.
32 So now we are bringing you the good news (Gospel) that what God promised to our forefathers,
33 This He has completely fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, You are My Son; today I have begotten You [caused You to arise, to be born; formally shown You to be the Messiah by the resurrection].
34 And as to His having raised Him from among the dead, now no more to return to [undergo] putrefaction and dissolution [of the grave], He spoke in this way, I will fulfill and give to you the holy and sure mercy and blessings [that were promised and assured] to David.
35 For this reason He says also in another psalm, You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption [to undergo putrefaction and dissolution of the grave].
36 For David, after he had served God’s will and purpose and counsel in his own generation, fell asleep [in death] and was buried among his forefathers, and he did see corruption and undergo putrefaction and dissolution [of the grave].
37 But He Whom God raised up [to life] saw no corruption [did not experience putrefaction and dissolution of the grave].
38 So let it be clearly known and understood by you, brethren, that through this Man forgiveness and removal of sins is now proclaimed to you;
39 And that through Him everyone who believes [who acknowledges Jesus as his Savior and devotes himself to Him] is absolved (cleared and freed) from every charge from which he could not be justified and freed by the Law of Moses and given right standing with God.

From NetBible Acts 13:33
that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.’

  • * This promise refers to the promise of a Savior through the seed (descendants) of David that is proclaimed as fulfilled (Rom 1:1-7).
  • * You are my Son. The key to how the quotation is used is the naming of Jesus as “Son” to the Father. The language is that of kingship, as Ps 2 indicates. Here is the promise about what the ultimate Davidic heir would be.

.
Mark 12:35-37 NKJV
Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?
35 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36 For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
37 Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
And the common people heard Him gladly.

From NetBible Mark 12:35-37

  • * It was a common belief in Judaism that Messiah would be David’s son in that he would come from the lineage of David. On this point the Pharisees agreed and were correct. But their understanding was nonetheless incomplete, for Messiah is also David’s Lord. With this statement Jesus was affirming that, as the Messiah, he is both God and man.
  • * The Lord said to my Lord. With David being the speaker, this indicates his respect for his descendant (referred to as my Lord). Jesus was arguing, as the ancient exposition assumed, that the passage is about the Lord’s anointed. The passage looks at an enthronement of this figure and a declaration of honor for him as he takes his place at the side of God. In Jerusalem, the king’s palace was located to the right of the temple to indicate this kind of relationship. Jesus was pressing the language here to get his opponents to reflect on how great Messiah is.(greatness has to do with position)

Like a Cloud with the Spring Rain

Proverbs 19:12 … The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but His favor is like dew on the grass.

Proverbs 16:15 … In the light of a king’s face is life, and His favor is like a cloud with the spring rain.

My dove will be surrounded by the cloud of My presence
Like a cloud filled with the spring rain
Bringing showers of blessing
Bringing light – the light of the king’s face
Bringing life
To all who are open to receive.

Psalm 2:6-7 … But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain. “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

Micah 5:7 … The remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or linger for mankind.

Isaiah 2:2 … Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD’S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it.

Psalm 90:14-17 … O satisfy us with Your mercy and loving-kindness in the morning [now, before we are older], that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad in proportion to the days in which You have afflicted us and to the years in which we have suffered evil. Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants, and Your [glorious] majesty to their children.

And let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God be upon us; confirm and establish the work of our hands–yes, the work of our hands, confirm and establish it.
