Noble Heart?

June 4, 2018

.
Luke 8:15 AMP … But as for that seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word with a good and noble heart, and hold on to it tightly, and bear fruit with patience.
.
Who has a noble heart?
.
Acts 17:11 AMP … Now these people were more noble and open-minded than those in Thessalonica, so they received the message [of salvation through faith in the Christ] with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
.
Luke 8:18 AMP … So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
.
Mark 4:23-25 AMP … If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear and heed My words.” 24 Then He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By your own standard of measurement [that is, to the extent that you study spiritual truth and apply godly wisdom] it will be measured to you [and you will be given even greater ability to respond]—and more will be given to you besides. 25 For whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a yearning for truth], even what he has will be taken away from him.”

**Footnotes:
Mark 4:25 The person “who has” is one who is receptive to God’s word, while the one “who does not have” is the person who is blind to and has rejected the spiritual truth and godly wisdom already given to him. As a result, even what little he had previously understood about Jesus will no longer be clear to him.

Hebrews 12:25-29 AMP … See to it that you do not refuse [to listen to] Him who is speaking [to you now]. For if those [sons of Israel] did not escape when they refused [to listen to] him who warned them on earth [revealing God’s will], how much less will we escape if we turn our backs on Him who warns from heaven? 26 His voice shook the earth [at Mount Sinai] then, but now He has given a promise, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the [starry] heaven.” 27 Now this [expression], “Yet once more,” indicates the removal and final transformation of all those things which can be shaken—that is, of that which has been created—so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
.
28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, and offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is [indeed] a consuming fire.

Human Wisdom and a Hard Heart

July 1, 2017

Mark 8:17-18 NASB … And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

Symptoms of hard heart = unable to see(perceive), unable to understand, unable to hear, and unable to remember.

Interesting that these same symptoms are in the following passage about the vanity/meaninglessness/futility of relying on human/worldly wisdom.

Relying on human/worldly wisdom results in a hard heart that is unable to see, hear, understand or remember things of the Lord!

Ecclesiastes 1:8-11 AMPC … All things are weary with toil and all words are feeble; man cannot utter it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. 9 The thing that has been—it is what will be again, and that which has been done is that which will be done again; and there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there a thing of which it may be said, See, this is new? It has already been, in the vast ages of time [recorded or unrecorded] which were before us. 11 There is no remembrance of former happenings or men, neither will there be any remembrance of happenings of generations that are to come by those who are to come after them.

Soften My Heart

June 28, 2017

Give Me Faith
Elevation Worship

Verse:
I need You to soften my heart,
To break me apart.
I need You to open my eyes,
To see that You’re shaping my life.

Pre-Chorus:
All I am,
I surrender.

Chorus:
Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good, and Your love is great.
I’m broken inside, I give You my life.

Verse 2:
I need You to soften my heart,
To break me apart.
I need You to pierce through the dark
And cleanse every part of me.

Bridge:
I may be weak, but
Your Spirit’s strong in me.
My flesh may fail, but
My God You never will.

***

What does this prayer mean? What does softening your heart have to do with breaking “me” apart? Opening eyes? Cleansing? Surrender?

Psalm 51:17The (acceptable)sacrifices of God are a broken(humble, surrendered) spirit; A broken and a contrite(repentant) heart, O God, You will not despise(reject).

Psalm 51:7-13 NASB … Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. 9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will be converted to You.

What is the opposite of a soft, humble, surrendered heart? Isn’t it a hard heart?

Mark 8:17-18 NASB … And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

Symptoms of hard heart = unable to see(perceive), unable to understand, unable to hear, and unable to remember. A hard heart – this is what must be broken apart.

Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV … And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

The strong’s word – heilikrines [1506] for sincere in this prayer is very interesting. It means pure, sincere, unsullied. Looking more closely at this word, we see it is actually a compound word. The first part comes from heile (the sun’s ray), the second from krino (to judge). So the two parts together mean to be found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light!

What a beautiful picture of a sincere/pure (soft)heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing.

From NetBbible Phil 1:10

  • *sincere – heilikrines[1506] = pure, unsullied
*found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light
*from heile (the sun’s ray) and [2919]; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.

Psalm 139:23-24Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Tender Hearted Delight

December 1, 2013

Psalm 37:3-4 … Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

From NetBible Ps 37:4

  • Delight[06026] = to be soft{pliable}, be delicate, be dainty
  • Desires[04862] = request, petition, prayers

*Faith and obedience (v. 3) will bring divine blessing (v. 4).

2 Kings 22:18-19 … Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard what I spoke against this place . . . I also have heard you, says the Lord.

From NetBible 2Ki 22:19

  • Tender[07401] = to be soft, sensitive, responsive, penitent
  • Humbled[03665] = to be brought into subjection
    * two key references Lev 26:41 & 2 Chron 7:14 indicate that so long as a person, or nation, is arrogant or self sufficient, God can do nothing for them

Be Kind and Tender-Hearted

February 27, 2013

Ephesians 4:32 AMP … And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32 MSG … Be gentle with one another, sensitive. Forgive one another as quickly and thoroughly as God in Christ forgave you.

Be kind to one another

From NetBible Eph 4:32

  • kind[5543] = benevolent, gracious, useful, helpful, gentle, pleasant, not harsh, not bitter

tender-hearted

From NetBible Eph 4:32

  • tender-hearted[2155] = compassionate, understanding, sensitive, merciful, affectionate

Forgive one another{readily, freely, quickly, thoroughly} as God in Christ forgave you.

1 Peter 3:8 Finally, ALL of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers{or sisters}, be tenderhearted, be courteous;

***
I was meditating on the above verses about being tender-hearted towards one another. Ephesians 4:32 is in the context of how all christians should walk. The cross reference to 1 Peter 3:8 seems to be in agreement with this. I then looked at the previous verse.

1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Interesting …
Many times I’ve heard the focus of 1 Peter 3:7 to be on the wife being the ‘weaker vessel’. This is usually then generalized to say all women are ‘weaker vessels’. Does the above verse really say that all women are ‘weaker vessels’?

Look closely, it’s about how husbands should treat wives. Husbands should dwell with understanding, giving honor to the wife, AS to the weaker vessel.

From NetBible 1Pe 3:7

  • as[5613] = like, in that
    manner

Mt 10:16 … Behold, I send you out as[5613] sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as[5613] serpents and harmless as[5613] doves.

Treat ‘as’ a weaker vessel doesn’t necessarily mean ‘is’ a weaker vessel – just as ‘wise as serpents’ doesn’t mean to be a serpent.

Give honor as to the weaker vessel.

From NetBible 1Pe 3:7

  • honor[5092] = placing value on as precious

The focus is not on being weak or strong it’s on treating and placing value on the wife as precious. Look at the next part of this verse – why should the husband do this? Because wives and husbands together are heirs AND so the husbands prayers will not be hindered!

1 Peter 3:7-8Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. Finally, ALL of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers{or sisters}, be tenderhearted, be courteous.

2 Kings 22:19Because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself before the Lord, when you heard what I spoke against this place . . . I also have heard you, says the Lord

From NetBible 2Ki 22:19

  • Tender[07401] = to be soft, sensitive, penitent
  • Humbled[03665] = to be brought into subjection

🙂

Look how having a tender heart is related to the Lord hearing your requests! Being  kind, tender-hearted, compassionate, gentle, understanding, sensitive, giving honor and forgiving to one another is an important part of the christian walk. —> This is especially true for a husband and wife.
