Keep Alert with Prayer and Praise!

October 1, 2017

Colossians 4:2Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with grateful praise.
.
Remember Paul and Silas? Ever wonder why they were praying and singing near midnight(Acts 16:23-26)? After a long day, being beaten and thrown in prison why would they do this? Consider Psalm 119 – they knew this psalm.

Psalm 119:60-62 I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments. Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your righteous judgments.

The word for give thanks is yadah[03034] and it means to give thanks, laud, praise, worship, to confess the name of God with extended hands. Praying and singing near midnight was a way to keep alert and declare their faith{the other prisoners were listening to them}.

The word for grace, charis[5485] ,  is also the word for thanks. Look at the connection between this word, thankfulness, singing and letting the peace of God rule!!!!!!!!

Colossians 3:15-17 … And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful[2170] . Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace[5485] in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks[2168] to God the Father through Him.

Paul and Silas wholeheartedly singing songs of praise and giving thanks at midnight was a way of inviting the Lord into their situation. It was a way to acknowledge the Lord and declare their faith, for  the other prisoners were listening. It helped them rise up despite their difficult circumstances; to expectantly wait, keep alert in prayer and watch for the Lord to act. Notice that this also let the peace of God rule in their hearts.

Is it any surprise then, that this watchful grace-full thanksgiving is God’s will for His body?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 … Rejoice[5463] always; pray without ceasing; In everything give thanks[2168]; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

He Has Made Me Glad

March 9, 2014

Psalm 118:15, 19-21, 24 NETThe voice of rejoicing and salvation{deliverance} is in the tents{tabernacles} of the righteous; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly. … Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter through them, and give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter.  I will give thanks to You, for You have answered me, And You have become my salvation{deliverer}.  … This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
.

.
He Has Made Me Glad Lyrics

I will enter his gates with
Thanksgiving in my heart
I will enter his courts with praise
I will say this is the day that the
Lord has made
I will rejoice for he has made me glad

He has made me glad
He has made me glad
I will rejoice for he has
Made me glad, glad, glad
He has made me glad
He has made me glad
I will rejoice for he has
Made me glad

.

Psalm 100 AMP

A Psalm of thanksgiving and for the thank offering.

1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come before His presence with singing!

3 Know (perceive, recognize, and understand with approval) that the Lord is God! It is He Who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His]! We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless andaffectionately praise His name!

5 For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations.
.

Psalm 68:3-4 AMP But let the [uncompromisingly] righteous be glad; let them be in high spirits and glory before God, yes, let them [jubilantly] rejoice!

4 Sing to God, sing praises to His name, cast up a highway for{extol} Him Who rides through the deserts—His name is the Lord—be in high spirits and glory before Him!

From NetBible Ps 68:4

  • extol[05549] = lift up a song, cast up a highway/way

Singing praises, rejoicing and extolling the Lord – is like casting up a highway – inviting Him in. This is a good thing to do especially in the desert — for it’s only the Lord’s presence that brings rain into your desert.

Psalm 68:8-9 AMP The earth trembled, the heavens also poured down [rain] at the presence of God; yonder Sinai quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

9 You, O God, did send a plentiful rain; You did restore and confirm Your heritage when it languished and was weary.

Psalm 100 – Seven Commands of Thanksgiving

November 17, 2012

Psalm 100 AMP
A Psalm of thanksgiving and for the thank offering.

1 MAKE A joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!

2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come before His presence with singing!

3 Know (perceive, recognize, and understand with approval) that the Lord is God! It is He Who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His]! We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His name!

5 For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations.

Look at the subtitle of this psalm, I never realized before that psalm 100, a psalm of thanksgiving was “for the thank offering”. Look at the above psalm, it’s interesting that it contains seven ways to praise and that these ways to praise are also commands: seven commands of thanksgiving!

Do you want to say thank you to the Lord Jesus Christ?
Seven Commands of Thanksgiving:

  1. Make a joyful noise{with the voice of triumph} to the Lord
  2. Serve the Lord with gladness{with exceeding joy, glee}
  3. Come before His presence with{joyful triumphant} singing
  4. Enter His gates with thanksgiving{a thank offering, a sacrifice of praise, adoration}
  5. Enter into His courts with praise{associated with singing a new song}
  6. Be thankful to Him{with all you heart}
  7. Bless and affectionately praise His name{as if kneeling to your King}

.

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. -Heb 13:15

Watchful Praise

May 25, 2011

Acts 16:23-26After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose.

Remember Paul and Silas? Ever wonder why they were praying and singing near midnight?

Colossians 4:2 BBE … Give yourselves to prayer at all times, keeping watch with praise;

The word for watch is gregoreuo[1127] meaning to keep awake, alert, vigilant.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God; which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Midnight Praise

The ABC’s of Thanksgiving

January 19, 2010

Although things are not perfect
Because of trial or pain
Continue in thanksgiving
Do not begin to blame.
Even when times are hard –
Fierce winds are bound to blow –
God is forever able;
Hold on to what you know.
Imagine life without His love.
Joy would cease to be.
Keep thanking Him for all the things
Love imparts to thee.
Move out of “Camp Complaining.”
No weapon that is known
On earth can yield the power
Praise can do alone.
Quit looking at the future;
Redeem the time at hand.
Start every day with worship.
To thank is a command!
Until we see Him coming
Victorious in the sky,
We’ll run the race with gratitude,
eXalting God most high.
Yes, there will be good times and there will be bad, but . . .
Zion waits in glory, where no one is ever sad.

~Author Unknown~

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
