Better is One Day!

May 28, 2014

Psalm 84:1-4, 10 NV
1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.

10 Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

“Better Is One Day”
Matt Redman

How lovely is Your dwelling place,
Oh Lord Almighty
My soul longs and even faints for You
For here my heart is satisfied,
within Your presence
I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

One thing I ask and I would seek,
to see Your beauty
To find You in the place Your glory dwells

My heart and flesh cry out,
For You the living God
Your spirit’s water for my soul
I’ve tasted and I’ve seen,
Come once again to me
I will draw near to You
I will draw near to You

Psalm 63:2-5,7 NIV
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 27:4-6 NIV
4 One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.
6 Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.

The Beauty of the LORD

March 23, 2014

Psalm 90:14-17 AMP
14 O satisfy us with Your mercy and loving-kindness in the morning [now, before we are older], that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

From NetBible Ps 90:14

15 Make us glad in proportion to the days in which You have afflicted us and to the years in which we have suffered evil. 16 Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants, and Your [glorious] majesty to their children. 17 And let the beauty and delightfulness and favor of the Lord our God be upon us; confirm and establish the work of our hands—yes, the work of our hands, confirm and establish it.

From NetBible Ps 90:17

  • beauty[05278] = kindness, pleasantness, delightfulness, favor
  • establish[03559] = confirm, set up, make successful

Look how rejoicing and gladness are related to the LORD’s beauty resting upon us and confirming the work of our hands.

Psalm 33:1 AMP … Rejoice[07442] in the Lord, O you [uncompromisingly] righteous [you upright in right standing with God]; for praise[08416] is becoming and appropriate[05000] for those who are upright [in heart].

Psalm 147:1 AMP … Praise[08416] the Lord! For it is good[02896] to sing praises[02167] to our God, for He is gracious and lovely[05273]; praise[08416] is becoming and appropriate[05000].

From NetBible Ps 33:1, 147:1

  • rejoice[07442] = sing/shout greatly for joy, in triumph
  • praise[08416] = adoration, thanksgiving, song/hymn
*from [01984] = to shine, brighten in praise
  • sing praise[02167] = celebrate in song and music
  • becoming & appropriate[05000] = beautiful, fitting, lovely
  • good[02896] =pleasant, appropriate, becoming
  • gracious & lovely[05273] = delightful, pleasant, beautiful

Praise from the upright is beautiful.

Psalm 27:4 AMP … One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.

From NetBible Ps 27:4

Draw Me Away!

August 15, 2013

Song 1:2-4 … Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth — For your love is better than wine. Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you. Draw me away after you and let us run together! The king has brought me into his chambers.” “We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will extol your love more than wine. The upright love you.”

Jeremiah 31:3“Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness{unfailing love} I have drawn you”.

Psalm 63:2-3 , 7-8… I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. … Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul follows hard after You; Your right hand upholds me.

Draw Me Away!

[LORD]Draw me, draw me, draw me away
Draw me, draw me, draw me away.

For you have drawn{loved} me with an everlasting love
A love more delightful than wine.

You’ve stolen{captured} my heart
I’ve tasted and seen
And now I run after thee.

The above scripture and song were on my mind again. From the Word Study below we see that the cry “Draw me away!” is figure of speech, a cry to the Lord to be led or captured in His “cords of love”.

  • It is the cry of one who wants to be a willing captive of the Lord’s love, His goodness.
  • It’s the cry of one who has beheld the glory of the Lord in His sanctuary.
  • It’s the cry of one who has tasted and seen that
    • The Lord’s love is more delightful than wine
    • The Lord’s love is better than life
    • The Lord’s love is everlasting and unfailing

It is a desperate cry, an eager desire to experience the Lord’s love once again. A desire to follow hard and run with enough determination to catch the Lord who is being pursued. Once the Lord is “caught” – O what rejoicing beneath His wings!

  • Spin, leap with joy
  • in gladness shine with joy
  • Sing with lips that glorify the Lord!

The Lord reminded me of the best reason to cry out “Draw me away”! The Lord promises to make this place of the King’s chamber, His sanctuary, this place beneath His wings, the throne, the place He rests His feet – GLORIOUS!

Isaiah 60:13The glory of Lebanon shall come to you, The cypress, the pine, and the box tree together, To beautify the place of My sanctuary; And I will make the place of My feet glorious.

.

[LORD]Draw me, draw me, draw me away
Draw me, draw me, draw me away.

To the place of Your feet
What glorious rest  -Isa 11:10,4:5;Ps 66:2
O how I adore You LORD!

From NetBible Song 1:4;Jer 31:3

  • Draw[04900] = to lead
*The verb מָשַׁךְ (mashakh, “draw”) is a figurative expression (hypocatastasis) which draws an implied comparison between the physical acting of leading a person with the romantic action of leading a person in love. Elsewhere it is used figuratively of a master gently leading an animal with leather cords (Hos 11:4) and of a military victor leading his captives (Jer 31:3). The point of comparison might be that the woman wants to be the willing captive of the love of her beloved, that is, a willing prisoner of his love.
  • run after[07323] = to eagerly hurry, chase
  • rejoice[01523] = spin, circle around(dance, leap) in joy
  • be glad[08055] = be merry, to brighten up, shine in joy
  • everlasting love[0160] = God’s love to His people
  • lovingkindness[02617] = unfailing love, goodness, mercy, kindness, faithfulness

From NetBible Ps 63:8

  • follow hard[01692] = a determination to cling, cleave, be joined, to run after with determination to overtake and capture

From NetBible Is 60:13

  • sanctuary[04720] = temple, tabernacle, sacred holy place
Ezek 43:7, where the Lord’s throne is called the “place of the soles of my feet.”
Isa 66:1, the Lord’s throne is where He rests His feet – He rests/abides
“Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?”

Song 5:16His mouth is sweetness itself; He is altogether lovely. This is my lover, this my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

Jesus my Savior
He is altogether lovely
The fairest of ten thousand to my soul
By His blood I’m cleansed white as snow
Made whole -Isa1:18;Ps51:7
The One above all others most precious to me
Jesus Christ my Lord
His love experienced and revealed
Better than life -Ps 63:2-3
The fairest of ten thousand
Seek His face
Taste and see -Ps 34:8
Life itself
He is altogether lovely to behold.

Song 5:10My lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand.

Psalm 27:4, 8-9 AMP … One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple. … You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on the authority of Your Word]. Hide not Your face from me; turn not Your servant away in anger, You Who have been my help! Cast me not off, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation!

Oh, to behold the Father’s glory in the face of Christ!
Jesus, please give me eyes for You alone
My heart trusts in You
“Your face, O LORD, I do seek.”

The LORD is my strength and my [impenetrable]shield; My heart trusts in[relies on, and confidently leans on] Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart leaps for joy, and I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. -Ps 28:7

Do not hide Your face from me
O LORD, I plead.

Psalm 135:3 AMP … Praise the Lord! For the Lord is good; sing praises to His name, for He is gracious and lovely!

Word Study

From NetBible Song 5:16

  • altogether lovely[04261] = delightful, object of desire, precious

From NetBible Song 5:10

  • radiant[06703] = dazzling, glowing, clear, bright
  • **footnote 4 “outstanding.” The participle דָּגוּל (dagul) functions as a predicate adjective: “My beloved is…outstanding among ten thousand.” The verb דָּגַל (dagal) is relatively rare, being derived from the noun דֶּגֶל (degel, “banner”) which often refers to a military standard which, when lifted up, was conspicuous for all to see (Num 2:3-4; 10:14-15). The verb דָּגַל only occurs three other times, all referring to raising military banners for all to see (Ps 20:6; Song 6:4, 10). Song 5:10 uses the term figuratively (hypocatastasis) to denote “outstanding” (HALOT 213 s.v. דֶּגֶל). This sense is closely related to the cognate Akkadian verb dagalu “to look, contemplate” and the noun diglu “eyesight, view (what is looked at).” Like a banner lifted high, he attracted the attention of all who looked at him.

From NetBible Heb 1:3

  • radinace[541] = reflected brightness, shining forth
*reflected brightness of Christ in that He perfectly reflects the majesty of God

From NetBible Ps 135:3

  • gracious[05273] = pleasant, delightful, sweet, lovely, agreeable

From NetBible Jn 1:14

  • grace[5485] = that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, thanks, gratitude

From NetBible Ps 28:7

  • My heart leaps for joy[05937] = greatly rejoice, triumph
  • songs of thanksgiving[03034] =songs of praise, confession(acknowledge name of God)

Who Will See the King in His Beauty?

October 17, 2010

Who will see the King in His beauty?

He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity,
… He who rejects unjust gain
… And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;
… He who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed
… And shuts his eyes from looking upon evil;
He will dwell on the heights,
… His refuge will be the impregnable rock;
… His bread will be given him,
… His water will be sure.
Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;
… They will behold a far-distant land. -Isa 33:15-17

The upright, those who fear the Lord, will see the King; The light of His face; The smile of His countenance.

He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure. -Isa 33:6

The LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold His face. -Ps 11:7

In the light of a king’s face{countenance } is life, And his favor is like a cloud with the spring rain. -Prov 16:15

When the king smiles, there is life; His favor refreshes like a gentle rain. -Prov 16:15 NLT

The upright drink in His rain and rejoice/shine before His throne.

Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. -Ps 97:11

They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain. -Job 29:23 NIV

They waited for me as for the rain, and opened their mouth as for the spring rain. -Job 29:23 NASB

The trumpeters and singers joined in unison, as with one voice, to give praise and thanks to the LORD. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the temple of the LORD was filled with a cloud. -2 Chron 5:13

… for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. -1 Cor 10:4

Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness

Splendor and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Give to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come into His courts. Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness{holy attire, glory of the King}! Fear{tremble, kneel} before Him, all the earth. -Ps 96:6-9

Drink in His presence
Drink from His glory cloud
Drink in His rain
Drink in His word

See the King’s favor
See the King’s smile
See the King in His beauty

But there{Zion} the majestic One, the LORD, will be for us
… A place of rivers and wide canals
… On which no boat with oars will go,
… And on which no mighty ship will pass– -Isa 33:21

Those who look to and wait on the King, will be radiant with joy
Their faces will shine with the light of His countenance
A beautiful shining procession of stars
His city on His hill will not be hidden!

Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces! -Ps 34:5 NLT

They that sing as well as they that dance shall say, All my fountains are in thee{city of God}. -Ps 87:7

Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert. … And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, And come to Zion with singing, With everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, And sorrow and sighing shall flee away. -Isa 35:6,10

Behold His Face

January 21, 2010

Psalm 11:7   The LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold[02372] His face.

From NetBible Ps 11:7
*To “behold” God’s “face” means to have access to His presence and to experience His favor — to see, perceive, prophesy, provide

Seven-Fold Glory

Revelation 1:12-16
Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.

  1. His head
His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow
    {Wool is commonly supposed to be an emblem of eternity; white is the color of purity and of triumph}

Daniel 7:9 I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure{lamb’s} wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire.

  2. His eyes
His eyes like a flame of fire
    {Bright, piercing, all seeing, flashing light, and also a consuming fire of the wicked}

Revelation 19:12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.

  3. His feet
His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace
    {Denoting his stability and strength; Shedding forth splendor like burnished brass heated in a furnace.}
  4. His voice
His voice as the sound of many waters

Revelation 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.

  5. His right hand
He had in his right hand seven stars

Isaiah 62:3 You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, And a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

  6. His mouth
Out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Revelation 19:15,21 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. … And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

  7. His countenance
His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength

Revelation 21:23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

Matthew 17:2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.

Malachi 4:2 But for you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.

Following the King’s Beauty

May 22, 2009

Psalm 27:4-6    One thing I have asked from the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to seek Him in His temple. For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at His tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.

What happens when we, like David, make beholding the beauty of the King in the place where He dwells(ZionPs 132:13) the ‘one thing’ that we seek?

We ‘taste and see’ and know that the Lord is good! –Ps 34:8
We know that His love is better than life –Ps 63:3
… more delightful than wine –Song 1:2

This creates a passion, a thirst like that of the deer panting for the streams of living water.

As the hart pants and longs for the water brooks, so I pant and long for You, O God. My inner self thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? -Ps 42:1-2 AMP

A passion which follows hard[01692], clinging, cleaving closely to the Lord. Following hard enough to capture or overtake(Ps 63:8) that which is sought.

A passion to reach for and capture the prize, a passion to run the race with endurance.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. –1 Cor 9:24

… I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. -Phil 3:13-14

This passion of the hart is also the passion of the Bride for the Bridegroom.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth — For your love is better than wine. Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you. Draw me after you and let us run together! The king has brought me into his chambers.” “We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will extol your love more than wine. The upright love you.” -Song 1:2-4

This cry to be drawn away is the cry of the Bride for union and communion with her Beloved. There is an inexpressible glorious joy that results from even the thought of a love like this.

The result of this joy? This following hard after the King?

Psalm 63:1-8    O GOD, You are my God, earnestly will I seek You; my inner self thirsts for You, my flesh longs and is faint for You, in a dry and weary land where no water is.

2 So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory.

3 Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.

4 So will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.

5 My whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and *fatnes[01880]; and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips

6 When I remember You upon my bed and meditate on You in the night watches.

7 For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings will I rejoice.

8 My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You; Your right hand upholds me.

Your whole being shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and your mouth shall show forth His praise!

You shall be upheld by the King’s mighty right hand.

My Cup Overflows!

Psalm 23:5 AMP     You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You *anoint[01878] my head with **oil; My [brimming] cup runs over.

** It is difficult for those living in a temperate climate to appreciate, but it was customary in hot climates to anoint the body with oil to protect it from excessive perspiration. When mixed with perfume, the oil imparted a delightfully refreshing and invigorating sensation. Athletes anointed their bodies as a matter of course before running a race. As the body, therefore, anointed with oil was refreshed, invigorated, and better fitted for action, so the Lord would anoint His “sheep” with the Holy Spirit, Whom oil symbolizes, to fit them to engage more freely in His service and run in the way He directs–in heavenly fellowship with Him.

Psalm 36:7-9     How priceless is Your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of Your wings. They drink their fill of the *abundance[01880] of Your house; and You give them to drink of the river of Your delights. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

Jeremiah 31:7, 11-14    For thus says the LORD, “Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations; Proclaim, give praise and say, ‘O LORD, save Your people, the remnant of Israel.’

For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he. “They will come and shout for joy on the height of Zion, and they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD– over the grain and the new wine and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; And their life will be like a watered garden, and they will never languish again.  “Then the virgin will rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old, together, for I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them and give them joy for their sorrow. “I will fill the soul of the priests with *abundance[01880], and My people will be satisfied with My goodness,” declares the LORD.
