The Help of His Presence

March 11, 2015

Psalm 42:5 NKJV
5 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance.

From NetBible Ps 42:5

  • countenance[06440] = face, presence
  • help of His countenance = help of His presence/ face
    => help of His saving acts/ intervention/ tangible presence

Psalm 67:1-3 AMP
1 God be merciful and gracious to us and bless us and cause His face to shine upon us and among us—Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!—
2 That Your way may be known upon earth, Your saving power (Your deliverances and Your salvation) among all nations.
3 Let the peoples praise You [turn away from their idols] and give thanks to You, O God; let all the peoples praise and give thanks to You.

From NetBible Ps 67:1-3

  • cause His face to shine = may God smile on us, show His mercy/intervention
  • shine[0215] = become a light, illuminate
  • * When God demonstrates his favor to his people, all nations will recognize his character as a God who delivers.
  • let the people praise[03034] = give thanks, confess the name/character of God
    =>especially to revere or worship (with extended hands)

David put all of his hope in the saving acts/ intervention, the tangible presence of the Lord.

This was not only for his own benefit
==> there is also a corporate benefit

The Lord’s face shines upon{individuals} and among{corporate}

==> that the world may see and come to know the Lord Jesus Christ also.

Matthew 5:14-16 AMP
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a peck measure, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble, and good deeds and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.

I Shall Yet Praise Him

January 26, 2011

Psalm 42:5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.

Last sunday during worship my heart was singing:

Praise You Lord Jesus for the help of Your countenance, for the light of Your face, for Your smile!

I knew it was from the above scripture. For the Lord showed me in the past the connection between His countenance, the light of His face, His favor and His smile.

Psalm 44:3 For by their own sword they did not possess the land, and their own arm did not save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, for You favored them, and smiled upon them.

Psalm 89:15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim You, who walk in the light of Your presence{face}, O LORD.

What I didn’t notice until just today when I looked this up again was that Psalm 42:11 & Psalm 43:5 were similar but not exactly the same as Psalm 42:5.

Psalm 42:11, 43:5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.

Did you see the difference? Instead of praising Him for the help of His countenance – His smile, it’s ‘my’ countenance! It’s as if the Lord’s antidote to a downcast soul is to start praising Him for the help of His face, presence, favor, smile. Try it and see if it doesn’t help your countenance. This really put a smile on my face!

Psalm 34:5 Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

Praise You Lord Jesus for the help of Your countenance, for the light of Your face, for Your smile! Praise You Lord Jesus for the help of ‘my’ countenance, ‘my’ smile!

Word Study

From Netbible Psalm 42:5
countenance[06440] = face, presence
help[03444] = saving intervention, victory

From Netbible Psalm 44:3 & Netbible Psalm 89:15
*“light of your face.” The idiom “light of your face” probably refers to a smile (see Eccl 8:1), which in turn suggests favor and blessing (see Num 6:25Pss 4:6; 31:16; 44:3; 67:1; 80:3, 7, 19; 89:15Dan 9:17).
