The Light of His Face

November 3, 2013

Psalm 4:6Many are asking, “Who can show us any good?”
…… Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.
…… Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD!
…… Let the smile of Your face shine on us, LORD.

Praise You Lord Jesus! The light of Your face reveals Your goodness. Shine(smile) on us today as we seek Your beautiful face!

In the light of face of the Lord Jesus, His goodness is revealed …

  • His life and refreshing

    When the king smiles, there is life; His favor refreshes like a gentle rain-Pr 16:15

  • His blessing, protection, grace and peace

    May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD make His face shine{smile} on you, and be gracious to you; May the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. -Num 6:24-2

  • His deliverance/salvation

    O LORD God of hosts{invincible warrior}, restore us; Cause Your face to shine{smile} upon us, and we will be saved{delivered}. Deliver us because of Your faithfulness{unfailing mercy&love}! -Ps 80:19, 31:16

  • Knowledge of the glory of God

    For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. -2 Co 4:6

  • His beauty/delight

    May the favor{beauty} of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands. -Ps 90:17

Psalm 27:4-8
4 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple.
5 For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle;
In the secret place of His tent He will hide me;
He will lift me up on a rock.
6 And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me,
And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice,
And be gracious to me and answer me.
8 When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You,
“Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.”

Psalm 89:15Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound{shout}! They walk, O LORD, in the light of Your countenance.

From NetBible Ps 4:6

From NetBible Num 6:24-26

  • The verb “to keep” concerns the divine protection of the people; its basic meaning is “to exercise great care over,” “to guard,” or “to give attention to” (see TWOT 2:939). No doubt the priestly blessing informed the prayer and promise that makes up Ps 121, for the verb occurs six times in the eight verses. So in addition to the divine provision (“bless” basically means “enrich” in a number of ways) there is the assurance of divine protection.
  • To be gracious/ show favor = The picture of divine favor – the beaming face of a parent for his beloved.
  • For God to lift up his face is for God to give peace. The idea of the fallen face is one of anger (see Gen 4:6,7); and the idea of the hidden face is that of withholding support, favor, or peace (see Deut 31:18Ps 30:8Ps 44:25). If God lifts his face toward his people, it means he has given them peace – peace, prosperity, completeness, health, safety, general well-being, and the like.

From NetBible Ps 90:17

  • “and may the delight of the Master, our God, be on us.” The Hebrew term נֹעַם (noam, “delight”) is used in Ps 27:4 of the Lord’s “beauty,” but here it seems to refer to his favor (see BDB 653 s.v.) or kindness (HALOT 706 s.v.).

From NetBible Ps 89:15

  • “who know the shout.” “Shout” here refers to the shouts of the Lord’s worshipers (see Pss 27:6; 33:3; 47:5)
