The Wheat and the Tares

April 22, 2019

Matthew 13:24-30 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares
24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”

The Parable of the Tares Explained
36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.”

37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

What is this parable a picture of?
=>This is a picture of the kingdom of heaven and hell in the world

  • The Son of man sows the good seed in the field{world} v37-38
The sower sows the word. –Mk 4:14
The good seed produces wheat = sons of the kingdom of heaven v38
At the end of the age wheat is harvested by angles into the barn v30, 41
  • The devil sows the bad seed in the field while “men” sleep v25,39
The bad seed produces produces tares = sons of the devil v38
The Pharisees are an example of the tares = offspring of “vipers” –Mk 3:7
Beware of the leaven{bad seed} of the Pharisees
    = false teaching –Mt 16:12
    = hypocrisy –Lk 12:1
At the end of the age tares are harvested by angles and burned  v30, 41
=> all that offends{causes sin} and those who practice lawlessness v41
  • **Matthew 15:12-14 Amplified Bible (AMP) … 12 Then the disciples came and said to Jesus, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard you say this?” 13 He answered, “Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be torn up by the roots. 14 Leave them alone; they are blind guides [leading blind followers]. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

Who can distinguish the wheat from the tares?

  • the servants of the owner of the field v27
  • The mature wheat
  • **Matthew 7:15-16 Amplified Bible (AMP) … 15 “Beware of the false prophets, [teachers] who come to you dressed as sheep [appearing gentle and innocent], but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them [that is, by their contrived doctrine and self-focus]. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?
**Hebrews 5:11-14 Amplified Bible (AMP) … 11 Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull and sluggish in [your spiritual] hearing and disinclined to listen. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers [because of the time you have had to learn these truths], you actually need someone to teach you again the elementary principles of God’s word [from the beginning], and you have come to be continually in need of milk, not solid food. 13 For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual infant. 14 But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.
  • ** Mark 4:26-28 Amplified Bible (AMP) … 26 Then He said, “The kingdom of God is like a man who throws seed on the ground; 27 and he goes to bed at night and gets up every day, and [in the meantime] the seed sprouts and grows; how [it does this], he does not know. 28 The earth produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head [of grain], then the mature grain in the head.

.
=>How determined are you to “mature” – apply the word to your sin – apply the word to teaching you hear?
=>Are you “mature” enough to gently confront sin in brothers or sisters? –Gal 6:1
=>Are you “mature” enough to recognize and confront false teaching?  –Acts 20:27-29
*Pay close attention to your life and doctrine –1Tim 4:16

1Thessalians 5:4-8, 21-23 … But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day{of the Lord} to surprise you like a thief; 5 for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep[2518], but let us be alert and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. …
… 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form{all appearance} of evil.

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

From NetBible 1Thess 5:6

  • alert[1127] = watch, to keep awake, vigilant
  • sober[3525] = be self-controlled, to be calm and collected in spirit
  • Be of sober[3525] spirit, be on the alert[1127]. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1Pe 5:8

From NetBible 1Thess 5:21

  • test[1381] =  prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing
    is genuine or not)

Revelation 3:1-6I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. 4 But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Revealing Sun Rise

March 3, 2017

Matthew 5:43-48 NASB … “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Love must be without hypocrisy
Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good
Overcome evil with good
 –Ro 12:9-21

Love your enemies means doing good to them
=> though we cannot approve their conduct.

Sun rise will reveal the children of God-the wheat and also,
The enemies of God(those who commit lawlessness)-the tares

At the end of the age(the harvest) the righteous will shine forth
A
s the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
He who has ears, let him hear. –Mt 13:36-43

Matthew 13:38=> The world is the field
At the end of the age both wheat & tares are removed from the field

=> The righteous to the Father’s kingdom
=> Those who practice lawlessness to the fire. –
Mt 13:36-43

We are not to judge the world
=> BUT we are to judge those within the church who say they are our brothers/sisters

1 Corinthians 5:9-13, 5 NASB … I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. 11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked from among yourselves.

=> The wicked are removed from within the church for their good!

5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Consuming Fire

August 16, 2016

A song:
Consuming fire, consuming fire
Down in my soul, down in my soul
His word like a fire
His word like a fire
Down in my soul, down in my soul
Can’t be contained …

Jeremiah 23:28-29 NKJV … The prophet{false} who has a dream, let him tell a dream; And he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?” says the Lord.
29 “Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord,
“And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

From NetBible Jer 23:28-29

  • NLT … 28 Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between chaff and wheat!
  • NET … 29 My message is like a fire that purges dross!  It is like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces!  I, the Lord, so affirm it!

From Biblehub

  • Matthew Henry Commentary
23:23-32 Men cannot be hidden from God’s all-seeing eye. Will they never see what judgments they prepare for themselves? Let them consider what a vast difference there is between these prophecies and those delivered by the true prophets of the Lord. Let them not call their foolish dreams Divine oracles. The promises of peace these prophets make are no more to be compared to God’s promises than chaff to wheat. The unhumbled heart of man is like a rock; if not melted by the word of God as a fire, it will be broken to pieces by it as a hammer. How can they be long safe, or at all easy, who have a God of almighty power against them? The word of God is no smooth, lulling, deceitful message. And by its faithfulness it may certainly be distinguished from false doctrines.

There is a difference between chaff and wheat!

His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire. -Lk 3:17

Hearts of stone vs. Hearts of flesh

I will give them singleness of heart(undivided heart) and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their hearts of stone and give them tender hearts(hearts of flesh) instead, Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God. –Ezk 11:19-20

Hearts of stone, hardened hearts
=> unhumbled, unpurged, uncleansed
=> smashed by the hammer of His word
=> burned like chaff

Hearts of flesh, tender hearts
=> melted made pliable
=> humbled, purged, cleansed by the fire of His word

Deuteronomy 4:24The LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

From NetBible Dt 4:24

  • *For God to be “jealous” means that his holiness and uniqueness cannot tolerate pretended or imaginary rivals. It is not petty envy but response to an act of insubordination that must be severely judged

Prayer:
Philippians 1:9-11 NKJV
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be *sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

From NetBible Phil 1:10

  • sincere[1506] = found pure when unfolded and examined by the sun’s light, tested as genuine, unspotted
  • *from heile (the sun’s ray) and 2919; judged by sunlight, i.e. tested
    as genuine (figuratively):-pure, sincere.

What a beautiful picture of a sincere pure heart!

The heart of one with a “sincere” devotion to the Lord will be found pure when examined and judged by the Son, the light of the world. It will be a heart that has willingly submitted to Lord’s searching and cleansing through His word. This is how “love” abounds!
