Role of a True Prophet = Good Tree

August 31, 2016

Matthew 7:15-20 AMPC … Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves. 16 You will fully recognize them by their fruits. Do people pick grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every healthy (sound) tree bears good fruit [worthy of admiration], but the sickly (decaying, worthless) tree bears bad (worthless) fruit. 18 A good (healthy) tree cannot bear bad (worthless) fruit, nor can a bad (diseased) tree bear excellent fruit [worthy of admiration]. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire. 20 Therefore, you will fully know them by their fruits.

What is the role of a true prophet(Good Tree)?

Jeremiah 23:21-22 AMPC
21 I did not send these [false] prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in My council, then they would have caused My people to hear My words, then they would have turned them [My people] from their evil way and from the evil of their doings.

  • True prophets cause people to hear true words that turn people away from evil and sin.
  • Grapes(good fruits) are produced by abiding in the true vine & the living word(Christ) –Jn 15
  • Grapes(true remnant) abiding in the vine & word(Christ) contain the blessing of new wine(Holy Spirit)Isa 65:8
  • Abiding in the true vine & living word(Christ) yield  understanding of the fear of the Lord and knowledge of God –Pro 2:1-5
  • Good figs are associated with acknowledging the Lord and repentanceJer 24:5-7
  • Good fruit is in keeping with(prove) repentance Mt 3:8
  • The fruit of Light is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. –Eph 5:9
  • The fruit of righteousness is life –Pro 11:30,10:16
  • Good fruit in Matthew 7 is sound teaching/ doctrine –Mt 7:24
  • Sound teaching/ doctrine saves = brings eternal life. –1Tim 4:16
  • The eye is the lamp of the body, if it’s healthy(sound fulfilling it’s office) the whole body is full of light, but when it is diseased(unsound, bad, blind),  the body is full of darkness. –Lk 11:34

Fruit for Eternal Life

October 9, 2013

John 4
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” 34 Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. 36 Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this case the saying is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

  • In the previous verses Jn4:1-30 the discussion is about drinking, now the discussion has turned to food – is this a coincidence?

14 but whoever drinks of the water{living water} that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” …
40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” …
51 I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” -Jn5:24

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. -Deut 8:3

  • What food was Jesus talking about?
    • How is this food(v34) related to Jesus?
    • How do you eat this food? Drink this water?
  • What is fruit for eternal life?

    From NetBible Jn 4:36

    • fruit[2590] =
      • fruit from a tree or vine
“You will know them(good/bad trees) by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?” -Mt7:16
Abide in Me(Christ), and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. -Jn15:4-5
      • fruit of loins = children/souls
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls -Prov 11:30
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. -Mt3:8
      • praises, which are presented to God as a thank offering
Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. -Heb 13:15
      • Those who accept the word bear fruit
“And those are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.” -Mk 4:20
“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth, And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; 11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. -Isa55:10-11
      • Those in the Spirit bear fruit
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. -Gal 5:22-23
(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. -Eph 5:9-10
  • How is fruit for eternal life related to worship in Spirit and Truth?
    • Both need belief in Christ(Truth – Living Word)
    • Both need to have received the Holy Spirit
Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. -Jn14:23-24
    • Both need to abide in Christ(Truth – Living Word) and obey God’s voice
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. -Jn15:7-8
… his sheep follow him because they know his voice. -Jn 10:4
    • Both need to be led by the Holy Spirit
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. -Ro 8:14
    • Both honor and glorify the Lord

A Tree Known By Its Fruit

February 15, 2010

Matthew 7:15-16 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?

Matthew 3:8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control.

True fruit  is marked by true wisdom and a love of the truth. It is pure and accompanied by righteousness, faith, love, and peace.

James 3:13-18 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

True Wisdom Earthly Wisdom
Pure Self Seeking
Peaceable Bitter Envy
Gentle Harsh
Willing to Yeild Unteachable
Full of Mercy Heartless
Impartial Favoritism

2 Timothy 2:22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

What are you trusting in? What are you seeking?

Power? The ability to walk in power and signs and wonders?

Matthew 7 :21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.  22Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

The ability to walk in power with signs and wonders does not determine the truth or true fruit!

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. -Ps 139:23-24

Teach me Your way, O LORD, and I will walk in Your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name. -Ps 86:11

Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. … Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. -Ps 51:6,10-12

Matthew 5:8-9 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Know Those Who Labor Among You

Know Those Who Labor Among You

July 7, 2009

1 Thessalonians 5:12, 21 AMP
Now also we beseech you, brethren, get to know those who labor among you [recognize them for what they are, acknowledge and appreciate and respect them all]–your leaders who are over you in the Lord and those who warn and kindly reprove and exhort you. ……  But test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast.

We are supposed to know those who labor among us. We are supposed to test and prove all things … until we can recognize what is good. How can we recognize what is good?

Matthew 7:15-20 (NLT)
The Tree and Its Fruit

15 Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

You can identify people by their actions – their character – their fruit. What is good fruit?

Galatians 5:19-23 AMP      Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are immorality, impurity, indecency, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies), envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].

James 3:13-18     Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility (gentleness, meekness) that comes from wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth {don’t brag/boast about being wise, that is the worst kind of lie} . This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, unspiritual, of the devil. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder, confusion and every evil thing. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no partiality and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteosness.
