Psalm 142:3 NLT … For I am overwhelmed, and You alone know the way I should turn.

Overwhelmed in a dark place?
Remember no matter how dark it is
=> The Lord knows the “Way” out
=> Only He knows the way out of this “prison”!

Remember Paul and Silas
Worship and pray!

Acts 16:25-26 NASB … But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; 26 and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

Psalm 142:7 NLT … Bring me out of prison so I can thank You. The godly will crowd around me, for You treat me kindly.

From NetBible Ps 142:3

  • overwhelmed[05848]= grow weak, faint, despair, shrouded in darkness
  • NET … when my strength leaves me,  You watch my footsteps. …
  • NIV … When my spirit grows faint within me, it is You who know my way. …

From NetBible Ps 142:7

  • prison[04525]= dungeon
  • NET … Free me  from prison, that I may give thanks to Your name. Because of me the godly will assemble,  for You will vindicate me.
  • NIV … Set me free from my prison, that I may praise Your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of Your goodness to me.
  • NKJV … Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.

The Lord is the only One
Who gives songs in the night!

.

Psalm 42:8 NASB … The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, a prayer to the God of my life.

Psalm 32:7,10 AMPC … You are a hiding place for me; You, Lord, preserve me from trouble, You surround me with songs and shouts of deliverance. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! …
… 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but he who trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on the Lord shall be compassed about with mercy and with loving-kindness.

Watchful Praise

May 25, 2011

Acts 16:23-26After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose.

Remember Paul and Silas? Ever wonder why they were praying and singing near midnight? After a long day, being beaten and thrown in prison why would they do this? Consider Psalm 119 – they knew this psalm.

Psalm 119:60-62 I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments. Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You, because of Your righteous judgments.

The word for give thanks is yadah[03034] and it means to give thanks, laud, praise, worship, to confess the name of God with extended hands. Praying and singing near midnight was a way to keep alert and declare their faith{the other prisoners were listening to them}.

Colossians 4:2 BBE … Give yourselves to prayer at all times, keeping watch with praise;

The word for watch is gregoreuo[1127] meaning to keep awake, alert, vigilant.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God; which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Midnight Praise

Acts 16:23-25After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them securely. 24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Awful circumstances can not alter God’s goodness.

Praise the Lord with songs thru the night
A prayer to the God of my life
-Ps 42:5,8
Midnight praise brings God’s Son
Who can brighten even the darkest day or hour!

O Lord, help me to remember,
– the darkness is not dark to You –
– the night will shine like day –
for darkness is as light to You.

Even there Your right hand holds me fast!
-Ps 139:10-12
