Psalm 18:30-33 AMPC … As for God, His way is perfect! The word of the Lord is tested and tried{proven}; He is a shield to all those who take refuge and put their trust in Him.

From NetBible Ps 18:30

  • perfect[08549] = flawless, sound, complete and entirely in accord with truth
  • proven[06884] = tried, absolutely reliable -Ps 12:6
  • shield[04043] = protector, buckler

31 For who is God except the Lord? Or who is the Rock save our God, 32 The God who girds me with strength and makes my way perfect?
33 He makes my feet like hinds’ feet [able to stand firmly or make progress on the dangerous heights of testing and trouble]; He sets me securely upon my high places.

2 Samuel 22:31-33 AMPC … As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried. He is a Shield to all those who trust and take refuge in Him. 32 For who is God but the Lord? And who is a Rock except our God? 33 God is my strong Fortress; He guides the blameless in His way and sets him free.

Song of Solomon 8:14 AMPC … [Joyfully the radiant bride turned to Him, the one altogether lovely, the chief among ten thousand to her soul, and with unconcealed eagerness to begin her life of sweet companionship with Him, she answered] Make haste, my beloved, and come quickly, like a gazelle or a young hart [and take me to our waiting home] upon the mountains of spices!

Habakkuk 3:17-19 KJV … Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:
18 Yet I will rejoice[05937] in the Lord, I will joy[01523]  in the God of my salvation.
19 The Lord God is my strength, and He will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and He will make me to walk upon mine high places.

From NetBible Hab 3:18

  • rejoice[05937] = to jump for joy, exult, triumph
  • joy[01523] = spin around in joy, gladness, celebrate
  • * these words are often associated with dancing in joy
=>Do you see the dancing feet of a deer? Of the bride(Sos 1:4)? Enabled to go on the heights?

February 20, 2016

15 God said also to Moses, This shall you say to the Israelites: The Lord, the God of your fathers, of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has sent me to you! This is My name forever, and by this name I am to be remembered to all generations.

John 8:56-58 AMPC … Your forefather Abraham was extremely happy at the hope and prospect of seeing My day (My incarnation); and he did see it and was delighted.
57 Then the Jews said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham? 58 Jesus replied, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM.

From NetBible Jn 8:58

  • * I AM! is an explicit claim to deity referring to Exodus 3:14 {note it is Elohim[0430] who tells moses this name}
*It seems clear that this is the case here (as the response of the Jewish authorities in the following verse shows Jn 8:59) => Jesus’ Jewish listeners understood his claim to deity by applying the “I AM” name to himself, rejected it, and picked up stones to throw at him for what they considered blasphemy.

From Zondervan KJV Study Bible

  • * I AM = declaration of deity from Exodus 3:14. Jesus did not say “I was” but “I AM”, expressing the eternity of His being and His oneness with the Father(Jn 1:1.) With this climactic statement Jesus concludes His speech that began with the related claim, “I am the light of the world“(Jn 8:12).*related:
John 8:24for unless you believe that I AM He{the One I claim to be}, you will die in your sins.
John 8:28So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.
John 6:35Jesus said to them, “I AM the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.

From NetBible Jn 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  • * And the Word was fully God. John’s theology consistently drives toward the conclusion that Jesus, the incarnate Word, is just as much God as God the Father. This can be seen, for example, in texts like Jn 10:30 (“The Father and I are one”{implies unity}), Jn 17:11 (“so that they may be one just as we are one”), and Jn 8:58 (“before Abraham came into existence, I am”). The construction in John 1:1c does not equate the Word with the person of God (this is ruled out by 1:1b, “the Word was with God”); rather it affirms that the Word and God are one in essence{in unity}.

From NetBible Jn 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  • *The Greek word translated took up residence (σκηνόω, skhnow) alludes to the OT tabernacle, where the Shekinah, the visible glory of God’s presence, resided. The author is suggesting that this glory can now be seen in Jesus (note the following verse v15). The verb used here may imply that the Shekinah glory that once was found in the tabernacle has taken up residence in the person of Jesus.
  • * The Word became flesh. This verse constitutes the most concise statement of the incarnation in the New Testament. John 1:1 makes it clear that the Logos was fully God, but 1:14 makes it clear that he was also fully human. A Docetic interpretation is completely ruled out. Here for the first time the Logos of 1:1 is identified as Jesus of Nazareth – the two are one and the same. Thus this is the last time the word logos is used in the Fourth Gospel to refer to the second person of the Trinity. From here on it is Jesus of Nazareth who is the focus of John’s Gospel.
  • From Zondervan KJV Study Bible on types of Gnosticism
    • Docetic = Christ only “seemed” to have a body => denies fully human
    • Cerinthianism = The divine Christ joined the man Jesus at baptism and left Him before He died => denies fully God
  • only begotten = The word in Greek was used of an only child. It was also used of something unique (only one of its kind). Thus the word means “one-of-a-kind” and is reserved for Jesus in the Johannine literature of the NT. While all Christians are children of God, Jesus is God’s Son in a unique, one-of-a-kind sense. The word is used in this way in all its uses in the Gospel of John (1:14, 1:18, 3:16, 3:18).

From NetBible Jn 17:5
Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

  • * this verse looks back to the assertion in Jn 1:1 that the Word (the Λόγος [Logos], who became Jesus of Nazareth in Jn 1:14) was with God (πρὸς τὸν θεόν, pro” ton qeon). Whatever else may be said, the statement in 17:5 strongly asserts the preexistence of Jesus Christ.
  • * It is important to note that although Jesus prayed for a return to the glory he had at the Father’s side before the world was created, he was not praying for a “de-incarnation.” His humanity which he took on at the incarnation (Jn 1:14) remains, though now glorified.

Hebrews 13:8 AMPC … Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is [always] the same, yesterday, today, [yes] and forever (to the ages).

Matthew 15:21-28 NASB … Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.” 23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 And He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 But she said, “Yes, Lord; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at once.

From NetBible Mt 15:25, Mt 15:28

  • bow down[4352]proskuneo = to kiss the hand towards one (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand), in token of reverence, prostrate oneself(or kneel) in homage – worship, adoration
  • healed[2390] = cure, made whole

Streams of Precious Tears

February 16, 2016

Psalm 119:147-152 AMPC … I anticipated the dawning of the morning and cried [in childlike prayer]; I hoped in Your word.
148 My eyes anticipate the night watches and I am awake before the cry of the watchman, that I may meditate on Your word.
149 Hear my voice according to Your steadfast love; O Lord, quicken me and give me life according to Your [righteous] decrees.
150 They draw near who follow after wrong thinking and persecute me with wickedness; they are far from Your law.
151 You are near, O Lord [nearer to me than my foes], and all Your commandments are truth.
152 Of old have I known Your testimonies, and for a long time, [therefore it is a thoroughly established conviction] that You have founded them forever.

Psalm 119:136 AMPC … Streams of water run down my eyes, because men do not keep Your law [they hear it not, nor receive it, love it, or obey it].

Revelation 7:16-17 AMPC … They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun smite them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb Who is in the midst of the throne will be their Shepherd, and He will guide them to the springs of the waters of life; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

Sincere Love of God and Others

February 15, 2016

1 Timothy 5:1-2 AMPC … Do not sharply censure or rebuke an older man, but entreat and plead with him as [you would with] a father. Treat younger men like brothers; 2 [Treat] older women like mothers [and] younger women like sisters, in all purity.

Treat others as if in a family relationship, “in all purity”.

Previous: Treat Others In All Purity

Remember these questions: Without obeying the Truth through the Holy Spirit can there be any real/sincere biblical love for each other? For the Father and the Son?

The answers are found in 1 Peter 1:21-23. 🙂

Biblical sincere love of God and others comes only through Christ.

Biblical sincere love(a pure heart) does not exist apart from obedience to the Truth(ever living&lasting Word) through the Holy Spirit. –1 Pe 1:21-23

Biblical sincere love is not only clinging to what is good, it is also separating, departing from evil.  –Ro 12:9

* Interesting how this is related to “abiding” in Christ and “doctrine”

=> only the one who continues in the doctrine of Christ(does not go off the map) lives and has both the Father and the Son and is able to have sincere biblical love. –2 Jn 1:9

***

1 Peter 1:21-23 AMPC … Through Him you believe in (adhere to, rely on) God, Who raised Him up from the dead and gave Him honor and glory, so that your faith and hope are [centered and rest] in God. 22 Since by your obedience to the Truth through the [Holy] Spirit you have purified your hearts for the sincere affection of the brethren, [see that you] love one another fervently from a pure heart.  23 You have been regenerated (born again), not from a mortal origin (seed, sperm), but from one that is immortal by the ever living and lasting Word of God.

From NetBible 1 Pe 1:22

  • NKJV … Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart
  • BBE … And as you have made your souls clean, being ruled by what is true, and loving one another without deceit, see that your love is warm and from the heart
  • sincere[505] = genuine, without hypocrisy
  • pure[2513] = clean
    – purified by fire
    – like a vine cleansed by pruning and so fitted to bear fruit
    – free from every admixture of what is false, sincere genuine
  • “having purified,” as the preparation for the love described in the second half of the verse.

From NetBible Ro 12:9

  • NASB … Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
  • BBE … Let love be without deceit. Be haters of what is evil; keep your minds fixed on what is good.
  • NRSV … Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good.
  • sincere[505] = genuine, without hypocrisy
  • hate[655] = abhor, separate from[575]
  • hold fast[2853] = cling, keep company with, be united, glue together

From Commentary 2 Jn 1:9

  • NRSV … Everyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God; whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
  • to advance beyond the limits of the (Christian) doctrine
=> contains an ironical allusion to the pretensions of the false teachers to have advanced to a “higher” degree of knowledge.
*From Zondervan KJV Study Bible -this going too far refers to the Gnostics who believed they had advanced beyond the teachings of the apostles(doctrine of Christ). This especially refers to the true teaching about Christ as the incarnate God-man(fully God-fully man -word made flesh(Jn 1:14) at birth). The Gnostics believed the Holy Spirit came temporarily upon the man Jesus between His baptism and crucifixion
  • Anyone who goes beyond the doctrine of Christ(follows off the map)
=> has no “true” knowledge or relationship to God or Christ
  •  It is necessary not merely to believe in God but to believe in Him “through Christ” (1 Pe 1:21).

2 John 1:5-11 AMPC … And now I beg you, lady (Cyria), not as if I were issuing a new charge (injunction or command), but [simply recalling to your mind] the one we have had from the beginning, that we love one another. 6 And what this love consists in is this: that we live and walk in accordance with and guided by His commandments (His orders, ordinances, precepts, teaching). This is the commandment, as you have heard from the beginning, that you continue to walk in love [guided by it and following it]For many imposters (seducers, deceivers, and false leaders) have gone out into the world, men who will not acknowledge (confess, admit) the coming of Jesus Christ (the Messiah) in bodily form. Such a one is the imposter (the seducer, the deceiver, the false leader, the antagonist of Christ) and the antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves (take care) that you may not lose (throw away or destroy) all that we and you have labored for, but that you may [persevere until you] win and receive back a perfect reward [in full]. 9 Anyone who runs on ahead [of God] and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ [who is not content with what He taught] does not have God; but he who continues to live in the doctrine (teaching) of Christ [does have God], he has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine [is disloyal to what Jesus Christ taught], do not receive him [do not accept him, do not welcome or admit him{as a fellow Christian}] into [your] house or bid him Godspeed or give him any encouragement. 11 For he who wishes him success [who encourages him, wishing him Godspeed] is a partaker in his evil doings.

Watching Tree

February 14, 2016

Jeremiah 1:11-12 NASB … The word of the Lord came to me saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a rod of an almond tree.” 12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”

Watching tree, watching tree
Sober and alert as tho you never sleep
Watching tree what do you see?

Aaron’s rod, Root of Jesse –Num 17:8; Is 11:10
Firmly planted by the streams –
Ps 1:3
First to bud first to see
Almond tree –Jer 1:12
A branch
A banner
A golden lamp stand
Aflame before the throne
Shines bright
Full of light
Full of life.

Watching tree, watching tree
Stand strong with the sword of the Spirit
Stand upright shine bright
Guarding against the darkness of the night! –Sos 3:8

Luke 12:35-37  … Keep your loins girded and your lamps burning, 36 And be like men who are waiting for their master to return home from the marriage feast, so that when he returns from the wedding and comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately.
37 Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are those servants whom the master finds awake and alert and watching[1127] when he comes. Truly I say to you, he will gird himself and have them recline at table and will come and serve them!

From NetBible Lk 12:37

  • watching[1127] = alert, to keep awake, vigilant

Kenosis-Why is it important?!

February 12, 2016

Recently I came up against the following false teaching and discovered it has a fancy name => Kenosis.

Teaching:
Jesus poured out His divinity before He became flesh. This is based on a greek word “kenoo” used in Philippians 2:7 which means “to empty”.

The teaching then goes on to say:
Jesus performed miracles, wonders, and signs, as a man in right relationship to God…not as God. If He performed miracles because He was God, then they would be unattainable for us.

Jesus received this power – the Holy Spirit anointing – to do miracles at His baptism.

Let’s look at Philippians 2.

From NetBible Phil 2:7
NASB … but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

  • emptied[2758]kenoo = of no reputation, nothing
  • form[3444] = external appearance, nature
  • bond-servant[1401] = one who gives himself up to another’s will, disregarding their own interests
    – those whose service is used by Christ in extending and
    advancing his cause among men
  • likeness[3667] = resemblance, looking like
    – Jesus looked like other men, but was in fact different from them in that he did not have a sin nature tho He was fully human.

So just looking at this one verse we see that Jesus was fully human BUT without sin. He was no normal man. If He was just a man His sacrifice could not atone for our sins.

The pouring out in Philippians 2 has to do with Jesus pouring Himself out as a drink offering, laying His life down as an atonement for our sins.

Philippians 2:17 NASB … But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all.

From NetBible Phil 2:17

  • poured out as a drink offering[4689] = used of one whose blood is poured out in a violent death for the cause of God

Isaiah 53:10-12 NASB … But the Lord was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as He will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

The correct doctrine has a fancy name too:  Hypostatic Union => that Jesus is both fully God and fully man.

Colossians 2:8-9 NASB … See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles(spirits) of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form …

From NetBible Col 2:9

  • * In him(Christ) all the fullness of deity lives. The present tense in this verse (“lives”) is significant. Again, as was stated in the note on 1:19, this is not a temporary dwelling, but a permanent one. Paul’s point is polemical against the idea that the fullness of God dwells anywhere else, as the Gnostics believed, except in Christ alone. At the incarnation(birth), the second person of the Trinity assumed humanity, and is forever the God-man(100% God- 100% man).

So Kenosis would also have you believe that Jesus Christ at His birth was not 100% God – the word made flesh – the radiance of the Father’s glory (Jn 1:14;He 1)! Kenosis is exposed as a Gnostic idea and is often associated with another spirit not of God!

1 John 4:1-3 NASB … Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.
